Message: Anyone remember the slot car racing craze in the 60s? Was cool for a few years. I had a couple of cars. There was Als Raceway and American Hobbies Raceway on Hawthorne Bl. A couple of the best tracks around were Chequered Flag in Inglewood and Revell Raceway over there near Panns Coffee Shop. Good clean and relatively cheap fun. The vacant Hawthorne Plaza shopping mall in Hawthorne, Calif., is slated to get a new look—its first since closing 17 years ago— which will incorporate retail, entertainment and housing in an open-air format. According to The Daily Breeze, the Hawthorne Council has approved financial support for the development, which faces Hawthorne Boulevard and runs between 120th Street to 126th Street. The $500 million remodel will include demolishing the enclosed mall to make way for a more-than-1 million-square-foot space that will include large and small retailers, as well as restaurants, a movie theater, a gym, a bowling alley, office space and 600 housing units. The plans call for construction to start next year.

Message: Tragic news: Linda Krueger (Zeagler), Class of 69, died suddenly on Nov 23. After a minor same-day surgery on Friday, she developed complications late Saturday and only continued to get worse. They believe it was a pulmonary embolism. She leaves behind husband Jim and sons Andy and Jon. Andy is a Spanish teacher at a high school in Torrance. Linda attended college in Illinois and stayed there, teaching 4th grade in Lake Zurich until her recent retirement. She and Jim were avid travelers and she was planning numerous more trips in the coming years. Linda and I went together to our sophomore Spring Fling HHS dance. I got to have dinner with Linda and Jim when I was near their home in 2010. We spoke to him after Mass and learned his name is Paul Montoya , class of 1965. He shared some nice memories he had of being on the water polo team and how much he enjoyed school . It's been a mess of years since we played with dolls, chutes and ladders, candyland, and rainy days were the best at your house and we'd go through the Sears Catalog wishing for just one item on each page (which we never got). Good memories of summers at 26th st., dressing like ladies for the Prom, tuning into KFWB for what song was #1, and in our spare time we ironed our bras into a point and polished our flats (shoes) and never touched the soles, and Maureen did that best) Life really is a fantastic journey. Belle helped run the food services at HHS in mid-60s. I knew Bobby was killed in a car crash while in the Air Force. Tony was in class of "63 and while an enemy, was always close to HHS guys. Tony played golf with us for 20 years in George Rea events. Joey Jr. was one of the really good baseball players that came out of this area. That leaves one family member, Carol. Message: I didn't know until his obit that the late and great Leon Russell was part of the Beach Boys family, by extension. As a member of the Wrecking Crew group of studio musicians, he played keyboards on several hits. No one mentioned that Leon, Glen Campbell and Harry Nilsson wrote jingles for commercials. He and Glen collaborated on "Go Little Honda", for example, in the early 60s. I think his best work is the Asylum Choir I & II albums. Great hippie music!

Message: Mercifully, the high school football season is over. HHS finished the year with a 3-7 record but did have a few nice victories along the way. I talked to one of the Hawthorne assistant coaches and he said that the absence of Pop Warner football in Hawthorne hurts the program a lot. Big John mentioned a while back that these kids are not raised with exposure to football. I talked to one HHS athlete who decided not to play this year said he and others would not play for the current head coach. Hopefully the new administration can get that squared away so we can get all the talent at HHS onto the team.

Message: My mother was one of the first waitresses at the "real" Original Red Onion in Inglewood. I was just a little tad then but I remember well Harry Earle and his little restaurant below the sidewalk on Hillcrest. It was very small but the food was fantastic even to a child’s pallet. We moved to Del Aire about 1954 and was quite pleased when they opened a second location on Hawthorne Blvd. across from the Cockatoo in 1958. It became one of my families favorite eating spots and later became a hangout for Beach Boys. One Hawthorne location that the article missed was the one further south near the House of Raymond. It opened in 1961 and was sold to one of their cooks about ten years later. It was renamed The Little Onion but kept largely the same recipes. I also remember once at the height of their expansion, they were considering opening a location in Hawaii. They asked my mother if she would like to go there to work but it never materialized. Hawthorne certainly had more than its share of fantastic eating establishments and the Red Onion would have to occupy a high place on that list.

Wanted to share a Daily Breeze article about one of my favorite local Hawthorne restaurants from the past. Great food & drinks and the ambiance was second to none. Only one of the original restaurants remains on the Palos Verdes hill. The good old days missing the yummy comfort food. Here is a link to the article

Message: There is an interesting memoir by Priscilla Presley about her early days with Elvis in the Friday WSJ (page M12). He was never a businessman; he would keep $1M in no-interest checking accounts in 1970. She is credited with resurrecting his career postmortem, to make it the industry that it is today. The WSJ is downsizing, due to low income, and may become humorously "WUSAJ Today", similar to that other paper. Anyone who agrees that you only see a city by walking through it may wish to join the annual "Great LA Walk." We'll leave Grand Hope Park, near The Pantry Restaurant, at 9 a.m. on 11/19 and walk about 16 miles across Pico Boulevard to the sea. (greatlawalk.com)
