Message: Mary Ann: Yes the problems in Hawthorne are economic but also in large part due to the breakdown of traditional families. Most of the kids in Hawthorne only have one parent at home! I'm mentoring two of the athletes I coached on the track team. I spent a couple of hours at the mall a few nights ago helping one of them pick out a present for his girlfriends birthday. These kids have potential but they need some guidance. I take them to dinner once a month and drill them on manners. The world is a changing and not for the better! We had such hope back in the 60s! Our new and better world has not come to pass yet but we can hope!!

Message: Once again I'm reminded of the remarkable lives Cougars I thought I knew have lived. We had a group of '61-'63 Cougars at lunch today. Just the right number to drill down deep. The stories that roll out are a tribute to how and when we grew up. There were stories about each person at the table but more important we hear of their lives and families. I'm sure other groups get together but our group of Cougars can rival anyone.
I'm kinda partial the that group too, Gary, thanks man.

Message: Clark, I understand your frustrations with sports, etc., but it's possibly a sign of the times in urban California/America. And, definitely influenced by economics. I was fortunate to raise two sons in a small rural town in the 80's and that scenario's still available to students here now. Academics, sports, band, agri, business, electives - it's all there. Last year's seniors were awarded over 2 million in scholarships. Here, it's the hometown thing and we've an aggressive superintendent who knows how to get the money for improvements. Recently, local donations of $675,000 for artificial turf on an already super stadium happened. Two thousand students K-12 in a town of 4800 is wonderful! I do think it gets back to the parent's involvement in their children's education and activities and the lack of that in today's society may be the root of HHS' demise. And, just maybe, Leuzinger was that good on that particular night. Go, Cougs!

Message: Cougar sighting #2,487!: This was a good one. It is easy to find young Cougars, most retail stores and restaurants in the South Bay have them. Last night I was at the West Torrance /Carson football game at Carson. I started talking to the guy next to me in the stands and he said he had a son on the field. I asked if he had played and he said he played for Buena high school in Ventura. Naturally he reversed the question and I said I had attended HHS. The woman in front of me wheeled around and said " I went to Hawthorne!" It was Elanor Dion HHS '59! Her grandson is the star running back for West. She had some good stories about the days with Nyman as principal and Chauncey and Capaluto. Just a chance meeting but it was great! Elanors niece is Cathy Dion Crnkovich'75.
Good one Clark, thanks man.

Message: There is getting to be tons of information in print about the Beach Boys. I just finished a biography on Carl Wilson which was informative, but the Beach Boy definitive text book could be by James Murphy entitled "Becoming the Beach Boys" (1961-1963). Quite a few contributors to feedback @ Cougartown have great insight into the development of the Boys. We watched it happen. Robin Hood knows plenty (about everything) as do those from the 'hood who have first hand knowledge and heard it happen. (Note to Robin: The victim of The First Kiss, Sherry Parker, left the area after "the incident" in 2nd grade, and may have joined a nunnery. I'm still writing a second chapter of that mad-cap adventure) Back to the Boys -- Carl and the Passions was the name of a Beach Boys Album. Carl does have at least two solo recordings. Louis Marrotta is mentioned in the Murphy book as is my old neighbor Bill Holland. Surfs Up!!

Message: Big John: I took to heart our cruise night discussion in which you said I take winning too seriously because I was embarrassed by the 68-7 beat down Leuzinger put on HHS last week. I've had a few days to think about it. From the first day I stepped on campus at HHS everyone encourages you to win, whether it is football coaches or teachers prepping you for an upcoming exam! If you say a cute young lady you had to try to " win" her heart. I just want to be proud to say I went to HHS! I realize you're retired and do not face the business community in the South Bay but I'm out there all the time. I ran into a Torrance high coach at Torrance bakery and as soon as we discussed high school football I had to endure the "Hawthorne sucks" comment. I've been coaching high school track here in the South Bay for 35 years now. I tell my athletes, " Win or lose you come to me look me in the eyes and tell me you did your best!" That's all I want from my athletes. 68-7 is not respectable, heck I could have put a team together from the cruise night attendees who could have posted a better score! I would just like to see old HHS competitive in all fields of endeavor whether it be sports, robotics or anything else. I do not want to just be proud of what we were, but what we are now too. Thanks for your input John, it made me think!
Clark, You are one great Cougar, dude. I know exactly how you feel when our home team gets blown out. I feel the same way you do, but do understand these kids didn't grow up loving the NFL. We all grew up playing football in the streets and these kids grew up playing soccer. Soccer is a fine sport, I guess, but you and I know little about it so we really don't much care. Maybe that's how most of these kids feel about football. I don't really know but just glad HHS still has a football program and one of these years we may just have that winning team.

Message: Lois Marotta & her brother Louie lived around the corner from the Wilsons. Lois would take her Dad's 56 Chevy wagon with surf boards in the back & Dennis & Carl & Louie & Herself down to the beach to surf. She was the first Girl I know of the surf. Louie passed away early 2000s but Lois probably has more knowledge of the early days of the Beach Boys than anyone alive. She still has contact with David Marks one of the originals. She had an old uprite piano at her house that Brian would come over & sing & beat on. When they would leave Her Dad Louie would say those kids will never amount to anything!

Message: Rock historian Ed Ward discussed at length the origin of The Beach Boys on "Fresh Air" on NPR today. The program is often repeated later in the day. In the beginning it seems that Dennis Wilson and Mike Love went fishing at Redondo Beach Pier in summer '61. Dennis remarked to his cousin that while there were surf instrumentals, there were no surf songs. So Carl and the Passions recorded "Surfin'" and "Luau"....

Message: Gary Bickers: I was recently introduced to Mike Doyle as he vacationed here from his spot in Cabo. Early on I asked "So, where's Butch Konn?" I recall once chatting with Butch when I was first involved with HFD and Butch was a fireman there. He was telling me of his nephew Mike Doyle, who was then developing a "Mono-snow ski." Darn, but someone else marketed the Snow Board!! He was robbed! Yes, 48 years ago I still remembered that conversation and now have met the legend here in sleepy, Kihei. Heck, I couldn't even remember how many laps Coach Featherston ordered me to take for goofing off a practice!! Good story about your long marriage! Way to Go!! Aloha! PS Mike is quite a cool guy!!

Hi Dean, yes we're out of 2XL and a few other sizes. It used to be that Ctown Tshirts were a hot item and were sold regularly. Now that everyone has one or two the sales have dropped off. It may be time for everyone to pre-order their Tshirts and when I get $600 dollars worth, will order them. It only takes about 3 days from the time I order them to when received. It doesn't make sense to order $600 (min order) worth and sell one T shirt every 3 months. I will set up a PRE pre-order thingy and see how many people want T shirts. Thanks Dean and hope to see you tomorrow at Cruise Night.
