Message: Hey Bill another advantage to traveling on Clark's route is at the PCH offramp to Ocean ave is the best bar in LA. Chez Jay's has been there since 1956 and is now a California historical landmark. Google "elephant in bar" and you'll see what happened when the circus clowns got drunk. Fun place.

Message: Bill Ferrier: Another option for your ill-fated Friday journey; Take the 118 west and head for the coast, take PCH as it is 50 mph most of the way with few stoplights. When you reach Santa Monica pch becomes the 10,do not get on the 10,just before the transition there will be an off-ramp for Ocean Ave. take that 15 blocks south to Washington Blvd. a left turn and then a right on Lincoln, it will take you all the way to LAX. Good luck! Friday travel in L.A. county is a no-win.

Message: In my experience, entering L.A. county traffic on a Friday is madness. I once got into bumper-to-bumper traffic at Century and got out of it at Roxford in Sylmar some THREE hours later, a distance of 25 miles. If Bill Ferrier must travel on Friday, he should consider taking Sepulveda at Roxford, which parallels the 405 down to LAX, if not the 405. Another option if 405 is slow is to take the Simi Valley 118 to either Topanga or another north/south road to PCH, which will take a long time but is no worse than sitting on the freeway. Using 5 to East L.A., then west on 10 to 1 is not an option. Take the Slauson cutoff and cut off your Slauson, as Carson used to say....

Message: 26th Street Beach? Yes, the classes of the early and middle 70s also frequented 26th, commonly called Two Six. But I was always aware we didn't invent that location - it was a hangout long before us. Drove by there recently with Dennis and Laurie Johnson on our way to Barry Smith's house in Hermosa and saw how it has developed and changed. All for the better. Nice accommodations, great setup and as busy as ever. So when we were kids, it was always either 2-6 or Manhattan Pier. I think it was the parents who would take us to El Porto....Good memories. Zeppy's Pizza, Micki's Swimwear, the pier....sunny days, Sun-In hair lightener, baby oil for tanning - or should I say frying? Body surfing, boy watching, swimming, socializing....sigh. All good times. Where did we go for grunion hunting?
Grunion hunting was done at RAT beach as I recall. Speaking of tanning, who remembers Man Tan and that ungodly orangy jaundice color?

Message: I'm looking forward to the reunion this Saturday. I have a question about the traffic in the LA basin. Once upon a time I knew how to get around it. I'm driving from up north and anticipate hitting the LA area around 3pm on Friday, traveling south. Would it be better for me to take 10 west to Hwy 1 to beat the traffic on 405, or am I just going to have to accept the congestion? I'll be staying near LAX. Thanks Bill
Bill, I don't believe there's a way around LA traffic. Though Saturday might be a better day than a weekday. Good Luck and have a fun reunion.

Message: "Lawn Chair Larry" Walters enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame in the summer of '82, when he flew his balloon-powered lawn chair from San Pedro to Terminal Island. I recall hearing it reported on the radio that July by Charles Osgood, who retires from "CBS Sunday Morning" next Sunday. It may have been the high point of Larry's life, which seems to have been an unhappy one.

Message: Dennis Rigdon and Jim Sloey's posts remind me of one the first Darwin Awards. They are awarded to persons who have taken their genetic material out of the "gene pool." It was the one about a person who secured a JATO (jet assisted take off) rocket to a '67 Chevy Impala. He accelerated to full speed then ignited the JATO. They assume he hit a top speed of between 250-300 mph, before he met his demise. The full story. This has been determined to be an urban legend.
One of the funniest is the one about the person who attached weather balloons to a lawn chair and with a pellet gun in hand to shoot out a balloon or two to descend back to terra firma. He launched his creation but unfortunately he dropped the pellet gun and had to be rescued over LAX air space.
For every action there's an equal and opposite reaction meaning the drum brakes on a 67 Chevy will have minimal effect at 250 mph Thanks Glenn

Message: Not sure if y'all have heard, but, HHS class of 1979's own Eddie Braun just flew a steam powered rocket, built from the original plans of the one Evel Knievel tried it with, successfully over the Snake River Canyon just a few miles from the original site. He actually flew far enough to clear parts of the Grand Canyon. Here are a couple of links: Link1 Link2
Hi Dennis, you must have missed the post from Jim Sloey from last Friday (about 10 posts down) and the video of the jump. Heck, I put these posts up and I miss some of them too Thanks for the links and GREAT JOB EDDIE!!

Message: Cougar sighting! It wasn't my sighting but it is worth mentioning: Last night Dan Dye spotted me in a crowd of thousands at the Redondo/West Torrance game at Redondo. Dan had his grandson there getting him fired up to play high school football. Dan's son Ryan was a star at West Torrance and now Dan is prepping Ryan's son. That's a frightening thought for opponents who will face a team with a Dan Dye clone leading the way!
Saw Dan at our reunion meeting this afternoon and he said his grandson is 3 years old. It will be 13 years before he terrorizes the opponents Thanks man.

Message: There is a series on youtube.com called "Tom Explores Los Angeles." In the spirit of the late Huell Howser, young Tom Carroll offers short visits to unknown sites in a grittier and less-rehearsed style. The most popular visit is to "Hawthorne Plaza - Dead Mall," in which he offers a cursory history of both the city and the 1977-99 mall. If there will be a new hotel across the street, what is planned for the site of the mall? Will the county library and the fire station remain?
Re the Mall and Fire Station/Library. John, You probably missed the post by Bob and Karen Fraser below, about 15 posts.

Message: Hey, John Baker, it's that time again. The Class of 67 just had our first meeting for our 50 Year Reunion. Paul Clark, Judi Zaccaglini Storie and I met with the Ayers Hotel. Wow! What a beautiful place! Thanks to those classes that have gone before us, we were able to come up with a plan for ours. HHS reunions are very well thought of at the Ayers. Our reunion will be the weekend of August 18, 19 and 20. We will have a "no host" cocktail party on Friday night with a dinner on Saturday night. The "early bird" price will be $95/person for the dinner/dance. We have had to guarantee a certain amount ($$$) so people registering late may have to pay a little more. There will be a choice between probably fish and chicken. The choices all look so delicious that we didn't want to make a final decision as to those choices yet. Of course, there will be a vegetarian option. The Ayers has set aside a block of rooms for us at the rate of $159/night. That is an unbelievable rate for this area. The sooner you get your reservation, the more likely you will get this rate. The reservation code for our class is HHSR67. The rooms are so nice. The hotel common areas are just beautiful. Some classmates are so enthusiastic about this reunion that they may be making plans for other activities. I will let you know as soon as I know. John, once again we thank you for this site. Our classmates need to be proactive and let their friends know.
Sounds like a hoot, Linda. You have Vegan and Vegetarian but nothing for the Beef eaters? I guess the football team from 67 isn't invited JUST KIDDING!! Have a great reunion, class of 67.
