Message: Happy Birthday, Bill Shultz! Also, to Clark, JB is correct. There will be hotels there but the land parcel does not include the library or fire department. The mall has a plan that has been proposed but that is as far as it has gotten. The mall property owner seems to always push back on what he wants there which includes a lot of housing that the public does not want so as always, stay tuned, or better yet, check out a city council meeting. They meet the second and fourth Tuesday of every month and are archived on line for your viewing pleasure.

Message: I knew the late Debbie Henry as a fellow swimmer in the HASC program with Gil Layral as coach. That Highway 178 along the Kern River is treacherous. While searching for her senior picture in the '71 El Molino on classmates.com, I noticed that all 36 yearbooks for the 1953- 88 period are now present on that website. The tv-oriented '58 book, in "glorious black and white" as it says itself, is now there, the last to be added.

Message: I read in this morning's paper (San Luis Obispo Tribune) that Debbie (Henry) Doubledee (Class of 1971) and her parents Alan and Bettie Henry were all killed in a tragic car accident on Monday, August 15, 2016 on Highway 178 in Lake Isabella. I did not know Debbie but according to her obituary she was active in the Hawthorne YMCA programs and the Hawthorne Swim Club. She went on to receive her nursing degree and received Nurse of the Year for 2012 at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo.
Sad news, Myrna, for the class of 71, I'm sure. Our sincerest condolences to all of Debbie's friends

Message: A note about the Hawthorne Historical Society: Pretty much the whole city block from Hawthorne Bl to Grevillea and El Segundo Bl to 126th St has been sold by the city of Hawthorne. Hawthorne Historical has to move by the end of the month. We are presently looking for a permanent residence but in the meantime our artifacts will go into storage. This means that all activities will be put on hold. Right now we are looking at next Spring for the Hall of Fame dinner. Hopefully our "no site" problem will be solved quickly and we can move on, but for now we are in limbo.

Message: Hello Cougars. I haven't been on for a long time and need to catch up. I have two questions. 1) When is the annual Hawthorne Hall of Fame Dinner? 2) Does anyone have an extra ticket for the ELO concert at the Hollywood Bowl this Friday? If so, please email me. Also, I noticed the Business Costco by Memorial Park has the cheapest gas around, $2.29, and no lines. I was the only car there last Saturday afternoon.
Hi Tom and welcome back. For the Hall of Fame Dinner, email Norb Huber at norbhuber@gmail.com He will have an answer to that question.

Message: Cougar "throwback" sighting? Clicking through channels this afternoon and ran across an old Family Feud episode - airdate 6/30/77. It grabbed me because the head of the family looked so familiar. Then I saw the young lady at the end of their podium - she too looked like someone I knew. Yup, I was right. John Bryan (1973) and sister Sarah Bryan (1975?). At the end of the show their whole family ended up on stage - two cute little twin boys as well who grew up to play professional tennis! Made me smile big - they won the game but not the big money, but they looked like they had fun. Sister Sharon Branigan and I auditioned for the show way back around that time too - we were claiming the three Effler boys (Skip, Mike and Geno) as cousins. We made the cut but couldn't work out a date when we could all show up to tape. Ahhh memories.
Thanks Sue, great story.

Message: The city of Hawthorne was founded in 1905 as the "Hawthorne Improvement Company" by B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard. Harding's daughter shared her birthday (July 4th, American Independence Day) with New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne, and a decision was made to name the city after him. I don't know how the streets of Hawthorne got named? Still trying to figure out why various countries change their names over hundreds of years? So sorry to throw this one out there for you light sleepers!
Thanks Billie, The Hawthorne Improvement Company was the company that added the Broadway Circle and Plaza Square to Hawthorne. Lots of good reading on Hawthorne's History by clicking on History|Hawthorne History on the navigation bar, above. Also, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the items you sent me. I do have other things from different classes along this line so will have to find a place for these "class specific" articles.

Message: I can't help with the "why" of most of street name changes in Hawthorne except going to the numbered street to comply with county guidelines. But I have dozens of old maps that agree that Hawthorne streets have changed names several times over the years. I do believe the "tree" streets were borrowed from Inglewood. We even had a Lennox Avenue once. On the other subject, the Hawthorne Effect, as the experiment was conducted by the phone company (Western Electric in at the Hawthorne Works, Illinois) and I spent most of my working life with Pacific Bell, I am very familiar with the theory. In fact, we used to joke with our boss that if he inspected our work it would change our output and possibly not for the better. He never went for that though. :)
Thanks man.

Message: John (Jacobjingleheimersmith) and all the ships at sea. Question: does anyone have a clue why the streets are named in Hawthorne -- the way they are? Some communities have a theme or focus for the names of streets. Like Presidents or States or types of trees. Hawthorne -- the city -- seems rather random? Some trees, like Birch, Cedar, Eucalyptus, but then there is Oxford, Ramona and Freeman. Does anybody have a clue to help me understand this perplexing dilemma -- I'm losing sleep. On a somewhat related topic, I was reading (a real book, not a comic book or Mad magazine) and the word(s) Hawthorne effect was mentioned. Curious, I looked it up: it is a type of reactivity in which individuals modify or improve an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed. Interesting, yes, but not vital to continuing with life as we know it. I just love to share.
Good question and not sure Jim, but Jerry Miles and I have thought about that very same thing. The first 3 streets east of the Boulevard are trees and I think the next 4 are college names? (Freeman, Menlo, Oxford and York). Ramona Av was Fifth St before 1940 and thinking Ramona School, at one time, was called Fifth St School. Many other street names in Hawthorne were changed to east/west numbered streets in the late 30s. Some of the old names were Raymond (120th St), Wallace (118th St), Euclid (122nd St), Kenwood (119th St). El Segundo Bl was Ballona Av and streets south of El Segundo were mainly State names (Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Creston, Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts and others). Hawthorne, at one time, had 2 Freemans, one on the east side and one on the west. Hawthorne had a Buckeye and Hawkeye St and also had a Wilbur and a Shirley St. Shoup was Shoup but Ocean Gate was Mullholland. They seem to have evolved from one era to the next, but have really only gone through one or two changes since incorporation.
If anyone has something to add on how Hawthorne streets got their names, please let us know.

Message: I had a semi-official Cougar sighting last week. We went on a weeklong cruise to Alaska and one of the guest chefs for a cooking class was Carnie Wilson. I later saw her in the casino I ran into her later and asked if she had been in Hawthorne recently, that caught her by surprise. I told her I was a Cougar. She asked if I had gone to school with her dad, I said no but my sister had graduated with Carl. She said she would like to talk but she was late for her cooking class. Pretty cool.
