Message: So, for my birthday, Janny has promised me "the works!!" Now a few years ago "the works" meant something entirely different than now and it included numbers 8, 9, and 10. I'll let you use your imagination as to what we were doing on my birthday 15 years ago...but now the works is all of the following: Pedicure, Manicure, Leg and eyebrow wax including bikini, and then out to lunch at the restaurant next to the nail salon..We just keep working our way down the strip mall. (wait, there's more). Then we come home, take off our clothes and watch reruns of "Gigi does it" on TV. Jan did spend a lot on a card, but I always think I'd rather have a Del Taco with that money. I really am hard to please.
So you spent the day hacking, chopping, painting and polishing toenails and fingernails and ripping hair from assorted body parts with hot wax..... sounds kinda kinky, Til. I think I'd rather have a double 8 mixed with a half 9 and 10 done with knitting needles, a crescent wrench and one of those pointy ice cream cone thingys, but then that's just me Glad you had a fun day girl. I LOVE YOU MAAAANN!!!

Message: I just read the 59 football season recap. What a great article. I had heard abbreviated stories over the years from Hal Chauncey, Steve Andersen, and Bobby Hunter, but this was excellent. Good memories as Steve, Bobby and Fred R were all my pop warner football coaches. Our pop warner offense was the HHS offense and when I got to high school, it was still the same stuff. Thanks for putting the link on C-Town.

Message: Ernie, as I said everyone got a shout out including you. Its remarkable how many subjects get covered in four and half hours. So not everyone's memories match and that made it even more fun. I think they call that "the fog of war." Not that HHS was a war zone but we all had our individual battles going. Some memories we all shared. I'm thinking about putting out a general invitation.

Message: I am glad many of you are enjoying the story about the 1959 Hawthorne High Cougars' football season. I appreciate those who have visited my website and left personal comments. It is very interesting to read your memories and recollections of that extraordinary season. I also appreciate the support for BECOMING THE BEACH BOYS, 1961-1963, which examines the origin and early history of the band and features more stories about Hawthorne and Hawthorne High. I should point out that space constraints prohibited me from including the entire football story in the book. Hence, the '59 season is summarized in the book. However, John Baker was so helpful to me while researching and writing BECOMING THE BEACH BOYS, 1961-1963, and so many Hawthorne High alumni graciously granted me interviews that I wanted to give something back to Cougartown as a small measure of my appreciation for their genuine interest in trying to tell the early Beach Boys' story as accurately and as honestly as possible. So, I finished writing the '59 season story, scanned lots of images from the 1960 El Molino, and posted them on the book's companion website (becomingthebeachboys.com) as a thank you to the many alumni who so kindly helped me and to the finest high school alumni website on the planet. Go Cougars! ~ Jim Murphy
Well Thanks Jim for the nice Cougartown thoughts and let me just say "Becoming The Beach Boys" should be on every Cougar's reading list. This is really what we, growing up in Hawthorne, were all about in the early 60s. I just can't imagine this book being bypassed. Becoming The Beach Boys is a piece of Hawthorne's history. Thanks Jim for adding to our page and my copy is on the way from Amazon.

Message: After trying for about three months we finally had lunch. Gene Gutierrez, Larry Cole, Newell Endicott, Bill Shultz and Pat Burris came over to Torrance for a four and a half hour lunch. When I drove out of the parking lot those guys were still talking in the lot. It would be correct to say if you went to HHS from '59 through '63 your name came up. Only good stuff.
Sounds like a fun get-together, Gary. Thanks for the update.

Message: Gary, I concur, A fantastic article on the Cougar team of '59/'60. My family moved into the Petche's old house that summer on 129st. Steve Anderson lived around the corner on Jefferson. Field Goals were kicked by Hawthorne? Coach Plum must have forgot this was a valuable asset. In 1972, the team I was on went the entire season without even attempting one. Even though we worked on them in practice every day. This cost us a couple of games, one was the CIF quarter final game against La Habra. Oh well!!! This is a great tribute to an all inspiring team that utilized every aspect of the game and had total team commitment. Absolutely a beautiful piece of writing and tribute.

Message: John, funny you should mention $3.50 Dodger ticket prices. Earlier last month, I attended my first Dodger game (against the Giants) at Dodger Stadium since 1994 (due to the strike) and was shocked that the Reserve seating (blue) level tickets that used to sell for $5.00 or $6.00 are now selling for $48.00. For a family of four, it now will cost them $192.00 to attend a ballgame. Very sad.
Very tough on the average fan to attend any sporting event nowadays. Back in the 60s anyone could go, but no more. Thanks Armand.

Message: Joe Moeller, a name from the distant past. Former LA Dodgers, Joe Moeller, Joe Pignatano, Ed Palmquist and Norm Sherry all used to work for my father back in the early 60's at Wieber Screen & Mfg. Co at 14507 Hawthorne Bl. in Lawndale. They rewired screens, glazed wood windows, etc. In those days, MLB players didn't make the big bucks like they do now and many used to work in the off season for extra income believe it or not. I still have have their autograghed black & white pictures.
Very interesting Paul, I say bring back the reserve clause. Let these guys get millions in endorsements and get the ticket price back to $3.50 for box seats. Who's with me?

Additionally regards Coach Bill Cooper; John Baker and I got invited to the '55 team reunion in Palm Springs. Coach Cooper was there and did say he missed an opportunity by not coming to HHS. These four plus a dozen more are household names in Manhattan Beach and throughout the South Bay. Just ask former Mustang Coach Bill Cooper, HHS '55, who ended up coaching football at Costa along with former HHS alumni Bobby Hunter and Steve Anderson. I think Coach Cooper would have been the logical choice to replace Coach Chauncey when he stepped down!
