Message: You could learn a lot at the Hawthorne Fair too. Like I learned that you should not eat three hot dogs and then ride the Octopus. Or, young kids shouldn't go into the freak show tent if they didn't want to have nightmares. Other than that, the fair was always great fun.
Meeeessssy!!

Message: Wow, just when you think we've talked about everything Hawthorne, someone brings up the Haw. Parade and Carnival. Thanks Paco. Great memories! I remember marching in the parade with the Hawthorne Auxiliary Police (HAPS) (You had to be 11 y.o and I just made it) And the carnival was great fun... and safe, aside from the occasional pushing and shoving match. Now those really were the "Good Old Days"! A little bit of Mayberry!
I agree, when I was young, I couldn't wait for the Hawthorne Fair time of year

Message: In reference to your post in Facebook Cougartown Community about the Hawthorne parade. I don't remember ever missing a parade in the 17 years that I lived there, I rode in the parade as an all-star baseball player, I followed Jayne Mansfield and her husband Mickey Hargitay as Grand Marshals. It also led to the start of the of Hawthorne Memorial fair. In my teen years, I won teddy bears for my sisters in the dime toss, was interviewed by Bill Welsh of KTTV, got into a fight behind the big top, was in love, and fell in love (saw Sharon on the Tilt-A-Whirl), I remember spending a couple of nights sleeping in the dime toss booth for the Hawthorne National Middle League with the late Gary Persinger and Bobby Bausman and there was nothing in the world that beat walking the mid-way listening to Lloyd Price..Johnny, Johnny, I'm Gonna Get Married..The year 1959, the BEST of Times.
Maaann that takes me back. I remember the Hawthorne Parade and throwing water balloons at the Motel T fire truck that the Hawthorne firemen used to drive. The fair was great too and remember all the rides and the tent set up to accomodate the local and not so local vendors. The Hawthorne Fair was where I first saw a Frisbee in action, with two guys in the tent, tossing it back and forth, making it curve. I had to have one but they were 90 cents and I only had 40. Also the first place I ever tasted pizza and have been hooked ever since. I do miss that fair and all its attractions. What a fun 3 or 4 days in the Summer for Hawthorne youth. Thanks Paco for taking me back.

Message: Sid, I hope you appreciate how long that bottle of Patron Tequila has been aged. It's been passed around as a donation bottle to the Haw VFW - The American Legion and Good Neighbors Day and a couple of raffles. Winners keep on donating it back so that's why there's so many bows on it. There use to be a time that we'd joke about being able to down a shot of Tequila and put a hair in it...now no one will touch it. We've sincerely started getting old and no one can mix a shot of tequila with their meds. (sissies I guess) Cruise night was fun and we even left with a dozen of the cupcakes. One the way out we always keep our eyes on the ground for loose change and we always find some. Next time Jan's going to rent a metal detector. He'll be 70 by then. Thanks again Sid.. great time. (how's that Mary Sloan, did you get a laugh this morning.)
Thanks Jan and Judy for the Patron. It, again, will be donated as a raffle prize.

Message: Some Art Laboe info from Murphy's book on the Beach Boys. Real name: Arthur Egnoian. Was a DJ on KPOP (at one point). Broadcast live from Scrivners Drive-In restaurant on Sunset & Cahuenga in Hollywood. Turned down Brian Wilson to record a song citing him as "too young." And then again as owner of Original Records he was offered the Beach Boys (by father Murray) when their contract at Candix ran out, so they went on to Capitol. Art may regret those moves.
Maybe Candix should've been schmoozing Murray too
Thanks Jimbo

Message: Another New Beach Boy book coming out on the 29th of this month. My 1964 Classmate and a nice guy. "Long Promised Road: Carl Wilson, Soul of the Beach Boys - The Biography" "No life in popular music touched on as many major musical milestones as that of The Beach Boys' Carl Wilson. While he is often unjustly overlooked as a mere adjunct to his more famous brothers Brian and Dennis, Carl was a major international rock star from his early teens. The proud owner of one of the greatest voices in popular music--one that graced some of the most important records of the pop era, including 'God Only Knows' and 'Good Vibrations'--Wilson was also one of the first musicians to bring the electric guitar to the forefront of rock'n'roll. His musical skills provided The Beach Boys' entree into the music business, from which he then stewarded their onstage journey through the ups and downs of the 60s to their comeback in the 70s and into the role of 'America's band' in the 80s."
Thanks Leo, and I found out from Judy Wudy that you gave me the Happy Birthday bottle of wine. Thank you very much, very nice.

Message: I'm about 1/2 way through the minutiae of the "Becoming the Beach Boys" book advertised to your right. It's very interesting. Thus far I've learned: the Boys shared the bill with (personal hero) Doodles Weaver, not once, but twice. KFWB was the main LA station in '61 - "K" is an ID letter giver to each radio station West of the Mississippi, FWB stood for Four Warner Brothers. Didn't know that. My next door neighbor, Bill Hollon (HHS 64) is mentioned because he is pictured next to Brian Wilson in his Middle League picture with a broken leg. Lots of little detail.
Hey Jim, Funny you should mention the Beach Boys book by Jim Murphy. He emailed me this link to the Plaza Theatre part of the book and Russ Jacobsen had a tale to tell about he and Judy. Thanks too for the heads up on KFWB as I did not know that. My favorite radio station, Channel 98, growing up and lots of great early DJs like my favorite, Bill Ballance, B Mitchell Reid, Emperor Bob Hudson, TQ Ted Quillan, Humble Harve, and some that are stuck in the grey matter and only surface when no one is around.
