Message: Hey John, in answer to your question as to whether Brian threw the ball 65 yards in the air, it is true and I would like to verify that. After Varsity Baseball practice one day, we were competing to see who would represent our team in the upcoming Easter Baseball Tournament 4 competition... One was running the four bases for time, which Brian Wilson won. The second was hitting the Fungo bat for distance, which Ronnie Baldwin won. The next was hitting the most home runs out of 10 pitches, which Rich Sloan won. The last was throwing the baseball for distance which Gary Mykkanen won. After all the contests were over I told Brian "lets go throw the football for distance." Brian stood at the North end of the football field at the goal line and let it fly. I was at the other end. It landed 65 yards downfield, right at my feet. Brian has always been very proud of that accomplishment and being the fastest running the bases. Another note of interest, when Brian was a sophomore, playing B Football, he did throw 1 touchdown pass to Russ Jacobsen. This pass was written up in one of our B Football Progams, of which I have a copy.
Thanks Rich, I know this stuff gets turned into legend sometimes. We're lucky to have eye witnesses to these events.

Message: If anyone is interested: There is a new color scheme for all buildings on campus at HHS. Brown and white are the new colors. The boys gym was just painted brown and white to match all the new construction. Nyman hall hasn't been touched, probably because the plan is to demolish it in the next two years. Anew floor was just installed in the boys gym so it is no longer the floor you old Cougars dribbled on in the old days. I'm running a summer track program from 120:30 -12:00 for kids who want some extra work. It's good for me too to help them and get some sun. We should have a few Cougars competing in CIF next Spring after suffering through a whole summer of Coach Millmans workouts!
I think the colors look lots better than that red and yellow they had on the buildings. Good luck with the Track team Clark.

Message: Living in Northern California, Roseville specifically, we can water our lawn only 2 times a week... So you can imaging that almost every lawn is beginning to look like wheat ready for harvesting... a beautiful golden brown... Then on the news last night I saw a segment about something that happened in Whittier... and the camera scanned across the neighborhood.... All had plush, green lawns... Are there any water restrictions in Southern California? or is there plenty of Northern California water coming your way so restrictions are not necessary?
Hi Mike, LA County has restrictions on water usage. Not exactly sure what they are. Our lawns are getting brown too.

Message: Mom and I had such a great day with you! Thanks for giving us the tour of the Historical Society, HHS, "The Castle", and Pizza Show. It felt so good to be sitting next to you reminiscing and laughing at our incredibly witty jokes! It felt like it's only been three weeks instead of three years! I do miss Cougartown events and meeting up with all our Cougar friends. Next year will be the class of 76's 40th reunion so I'll see you then, too. Maybe we can schedule it around the picnic. I like to multitask...
Hi Sharon, just like the good old days. Such fun to share the day with you and Mom. We'll do it again next year for sure. Thanks for the great day. Is Meadview still there?

Message: Hey John, It's true about Brian Wilson's arm. I saw him in pre-game warm-ups standing flat footed on the goal line and throw a 60 yard pass down the sidelines perfectly into the receivers hands. You might check with Rich Sloan. He was the receiver that caught that pass. Brian had a gun for an arm.
Thanks John

Message: Here is part of a June 22nd Brian Wilson (Dylan is his son) article in Rolling Stone Magazine "Over enchiladas and tacos, Wilson tells Dylan about his own childhood athletic career, something the 11-year-old seems totally unaware of and soaks up with glee. Wilson was a star center fielder at Hawthorne High, a skittish hitter but a strong fielder with a great arm. "I could run the bases in 44 seconds and throw the ball from center field all the way to the catcher. I wanted to be a center fielder for the Yankees. That was my ambition, but I got sidetracked into the music business." Wilson also played quarterback for the football team, but he quit senior year. "I got knocked on my back and I felt like I was going unconscious," he says. "It scared me silly. I go, 'Coach, I quit! I don't want to play anymore!' "Was the coach mad?" asks Dylan. "He just said, 'Hit the showers, Wilson!' Does any 50/60's Cougar remember the athlete Wilson?
I remember Brian the pine rider in football. He was a third string QB behind Steve Anderson and Mike Wood. Someone said he could throw a football 65 yards but don't know if that's true.

Message: Cougar Sighting once removed! Julie King (Newbury Park HS class of 2005) who is the daughter of Larry (Stone) King, HHS 72, struck up a conversation with another guest at a local restaurant. Somehow the conversation wound around to Karen Hastings Yokota commenting that The Beach Boys played at her high school prom. Julie already knew the story and piped up "You went to Hawthorne High!" You can imagine the conversation from there, Karen noting that she remembers Julie's dad and the Creede sisters (classes of 69, 72 and 73 I think....) Julie wants credit and Karen will be pointed to CT - younger brothers John and Ted also are HHS alum. Small, small world.... take THAT Clark Millman!!
Thanks Sue and yes, Julie gets the credit. See Clark, hanging out in front of a Vickies Secret asking every hot 22 year old what school they went to, until you finally score an HHSer is really not Cougar Sighting

Message: Speaking of Coach Plum. It has been fifty years but he is still kicking and I'm afraid he still might hunt me down and make me drop and give him fifty so I'm taking a big chance here. But my senior year I worked for NYC assigned to HHS. One of my duties was to clean the boy's locker room including the coach's office. One night I noticed a small note book on Coach Plum's desk that was labeled something like unusual names of people I have taught. I took a look and saw a list of the usual suspects, Royal Lord, Jack Hammer, to name a few. But then I got ornery. I added Otto Plum as the last name on the list. I always wish I could have seen his expression the first time he discovered it but never enough to let him know it was me that wrote it. I'm sure if he can't make it he will send Coach Chauncey to look me up. Ha Ha.
Well now he knows Jerry Thanks for a great HHS story and I'm sure Otto, being the nice guy he is, won't send a hit man.

Message: Today is Coach Otto Plums 88th birthday! I've been friends with the Plum family for many years. Ottos youngest, (Jill), ran the HHS student store in the 80s. About ten years ago my best friend and i were vacationing on Catalina. My best friend asked if I thought we would see anyone we knew. A moment later someone said" Is that Clark Millman?" It was Coach Plum. I asked where his wife Jeri was. He said she was on the beach. I found her and snuck up behind her and said "Excuse me mam we don't allow Torrance women on this beach." Jeri recognized my voice and responded, "Get away from me Clark!" We all had dinner together that night in Avalon. Good memories. Otto went on to coach at Gardena after leaving Hawthorne and had a fifty year coaching career.
Happy Birthday Coach Plum

I tried naming teachers that I had in the 70s that might have been there while Claudia was in school and sure enough she had Kathy Adkins for math. Message: I have been rehearsing feverishly for my 3rd production of the Senior Stars musical revue (sponsored by an organization called the Astoria Performing Arts Center here in NYC). The show is this Saturday. Meanwhile I have been posting the progress of how the show is going, as well as news of my "specialty number" on Facebook. (The number is You've Got to Have a Gimmick from Gypsy---what fun to be able to play a low-class stripper at my age!!) At any rate, someone who saw it on Facebook is Beth (McCammon) Feldman from my class of '64. I have not seen her since HHS. She lives about 3 1/2 hours away in upstate NY and decided to come to the show! A mini-reunion. I also talked to George Flesh who said to email him the details. George is an OB/GYN from our class and lives in the Boston area. I don't know if he will make it too, but that would be great. Any other Easterners want to get together for this? Maybe we can start an Eastern HHS chapter. :)
Well good luck with the show Pat and hope you have a clowder of Cougars in the audience.

Message: I must say how much I enjoy "Cougartown". My oldest daughter, Marice, is getting married Saturday, and I am busy helping with details so "Cougartown" seemed like a good way to take a little break. With all this activity I have not seen "Love and Mercy" yet, but I plan to as soon as I can. I went to York for kindergarten and part of first grade where I remember Brian Wilson. Then we moved to the other side of town where I was put in the second grade. Carl Boenish was my classmate at Ramona. There is a documentary in theaters about Carl, "Sunshine Superman" which my friend Maureen Curran Sesky said is great. Must see that too. I am a proud HHS grad although the only time I ever went back to campus was when my brother graduated in 1963. June 18 was my graduation day. Just a coincidence, my daughter's wedding day is also Brian Wilson's birthday. Happy Birthday Brian!
Thank you Maurine and good luck Marice.
