Message: HHS update: Summer school at HHS ends this coming Tuesday.I was talking to some of the counselors today, trying to make sure my athletes are taking the right classes. I was surprised to learn that the foreign language dept. has changed alot. When I was in school we could take Latin, Spanish, French or German. The only two language classes offered at HHS now are Spanish and Mandarin!

Message: Cougar talking: John, does the phone count? Called to cancel an order I had with a company and the girl asked for my address and when I gave it to her, she said, I'm from Hawthorne, and she use to live at 138th and Eucalyptus. Her name is Reale (couldn't give me her last name) and graduated in 2008...what a small world!
Yes, I think we can give you that one, Mo, thanks for the first Cougar Hearing.

Message: I, too, worked at A&W, in the summer of '63, first as a mug washer. After a few weeks I graduated to floor mopper and restroom cleaner. I guess somebody saw my potential and I soon moved to "Window", where I would relay orders from the carhops to the cook. I never got to make any rootbeer, though. The policy from management was that employees could have all the rootbeer they wanted. After guzzling for a few days, I didn't want any at all. It didn't help when I was assigned to clean out the crud in the cooling tank. Yukk! I knew that stuff never got into the product, but it still turned my stomach.
Great place to start a working career Ron, thanks man.

Message: As I recall, we made it in a tank about 4 or 5 foot diameter that was about 4 feet deep, there were two of these. It was stainless steel and had a line around it as the water line. Likely about 100 gallons of hot water. We then added 120lb of C&H sugar. It would be left often over night, for the sugar to totally dissolve and the water to cool. Just before the in use tank was to run out we added 5 gallons of the syrup and stir with a row boat oar. It then ran to the chilled tap where the carbonation gas was added. On a Friday night it was often that an entire tank was used. Apparently, they do not use that kind of volume today at A&W locations. I found this YouTube link: A&W ROOTBEER
Thanks Danny

Message: Wish that Danny Petty would tell his story on feedback, about his working for A&W and how he made the root beer in the back room. Somehow, we always think that it came from a can, not so. The Historical Soc. dinner was delicious and great speeches. I didn't know that Rich Sloan was so uninhibited. The Haw Good Neighbors day was fun, even in the rain. I walked away with $100.00 in prizes from the raffle. Janet Frantz made did the same, so now we're going to go to Ashley's and buy a lamp. Use to be that 100 bucks would buy you a bedroom set from some seedy little shop on Imperial Hwy. Life goes on. Congrats Sidney, on a very successful weekend event
Thanks Judy

Message: Hey John, my ears have been tingling lately..just wanted to say hi to the Cougs's out there!!
Well you ARE still alive. You missed a great Hall Of Fame program tonight at the Memorial Center in Hawthorne as Reese Walton (our own Mary Ann Walton's father) was installed into the Hawthorne Hall of Fame along with Seers Lumber, Carl Boenish, Jim Thorpe, and the Hawthorne member's of the Beach Boys. Fun night all the way around. I got to sit next to Glenn Crist and Judy Wudy with Janny, Linda Huthmaker, Bill Shultz, Janet Frantz and Jon Sloey at our table, we had the best table there The food was great as usual and the program was excellent. Thanks to Jerry Miles for the videos and to Norb Huber for being a great MC.
Now it's time to hit the hay and be at the civic center at 6am for Good Neighbors Day Car Show, tomorrow. Hope to see lots of Cougars out there. The festivities start at 10am. Come on out, see some great cars, have some food and listen to some great music. Bring the kids too.

Message: tHE " cOUGAR sTALKER" IS BACK ON A ROLL. Met Cameron Simon(HHS '13) down the street at the Kettle restaurant while having supper. He is attending El Camino now and I had fun telling him that when I attended El Camino tuition was free and no book was over $30. Now it is $47 per unit and books are commonly over $100!! I have a soft spot for the Kettle because right after my graduation in 76 I was working the 4 to 1 shift almost every day at Boys market. When I got off work at 1 my good friend Steve Maldonado would often meet up with me and we were off to the Kettle for late night onion rings and chocolate shakes. Those were the days!
Another good one there Clark, thanks maaaann!!

Message: I was just catching up on Cougartown and read Gary Bickers question about who wrote the school Alma Mater. Fred Morgan didn't come to HHS until 1956-1957. It was Mr. Warren who wrote the Alma Mater. He was the band teacher before Mr. Morgan. Someone must have an old football program with Mr. Warren's name on it. Mr. Warren may have gone back to Leuzinger where most of the early teachers at Hawthorne High came from as he wasn't at Hawthorne my Sophomore year when Mr. Morgan took over the band.
Thanks for the info, Maurine.

Message: Hi Sherry W.! California was given the nickname , "The Golden State " in 1968 in reference to our historic gold rush and the "golden poppy fields." Hope that helps a little. Also, on the 4th of July, we had the pleasure of partying at John and Anne Routs. Not only was it an awesome day with lots of Cougar friends, but John had an outstanding video of country western stars performing with the Beach Boys on many of their major hits. You haven't heard anything so beautiful as Willie Nelson performing "The Warmth of the Sun." Thanks to the Routs for a super fun day. Love you all.

Message: Meadview IS still there! And it was HOT!!! I just wanted to say that Hawthorne was mentioned on Coast to Coast (overnight radio) on Monday night/Tuesday morning's show. If you are a C-T-C member you can listen on the podcast or online. (www.coasttocoastam.com) It was in the first hour, at the 40 minute mark, but I would suggest you listen to the entire hour - or better yet, all 4 hours - to get a sense of the overall subject of the show. If you don't follow UFOlogy it might sound crazy, but I've been listening to C-T-C for years and am not surprised by much of anything that I hear on the show anymore. John Lear (son of Lear Jet creator and accomplished pilot) claims (in passing during the conversation) that the US Navy has underground submarine access in 15 western states and specifically mentions the Hawthorne airport as one location. Anyone hearing any unexplained underground noises in Hawthorne?
Yeah, when driving down 120th by the airport it sounds like someone is flushing a toilet. Maybe you should call George Noory and make a report
