Message: Just a quick recap of the Track & field season at HHS this year. The season ended last Thursday with the Ocean League finals at Lawndale. This was a rebuilding year for the track team, last years team consisted of twelve athletes. We had 60 plus athletes this year and were able to field a competitive team for dual meets. At league final our varsity girl shot putter medaled and my frosh-soph hurdler got second in both hurdle races and picked up a third medal in the 4x100. The team next year should be much better as more kids are showing interest now that we are having success. Unfortunately the school did not renew the teaching contract for the head coach which will damage our five year plan to return to a highly successful program I have applied to be head coach but as is true in most districts, credentialed teachers get priority over off campus individuals. It was fun being an assistant coach this year and the kids definitely help to keep one young!
Thanks for the update Clark and good luck with the Cougar track team.

Message: Two favorite Foster's story's: 1) Jerry Benson had a Nash Metropolitan and Bruce George has a Morris Minor. They raced across the street going both on Hawthorne Blvd. They were soooo slow a police car passed them on the right and never knew they were racing. 2) The first 409 that pulled through the lot with the headers wide open.
I remember either Jerry or Bruce telling that story. A crackup, thanks Gar'

Yes I heard that too. Another long standing business and "hangout" from the early days will be no more.

Message: Dan, I'm keeping Ann in my thoughts and prayers. JB, I still have my K&E slide rule stored somewhere in Hawthorne, I'm just not sure where. And speaking of cutting edge technology, does anyone still own a typewriter? I'm sure my Smith-Corona portable is long gone. The quote: "If you give an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters and an infinite amount of time, they'll write all of the great works of literature." Does that still hold in our world today? Perhaps it will but it may happen in a shorter period of time. Ah, the electronic age. When is Cougartown's 21st birthday anyway?
After eons and eons of looking over the shoulder of this monkey, and then FINALLY it types, "Whether it's nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous" .... and then, "pouispouiw8o5r;1sljrs%:hwe565[098wrelkws". I'd blow my brains out.
Cougartown will be 18 years old this June

Message: Micro Wave Ovens as per John Baker's remarks ~~ I don't recall the year but, it was in the late fifties or early sixties I was at a county fair type of thing with my parents and in the display area was Westinghouse and their "New Micro-Wave Oven. Bakes in minutes, not hours, etc." The demonstrator would be showing us how to bake a perfectly finished cupcake in 30 seconds from the runny dough poured in the cups. Finally, he had everything in the magical oven and turned it on. We could see the pastry actually rise up and become real cupcakes! They were hot and delicious! The price of that oven then was a whopping $600.00 (although it did match the size of a normal 'built in' oven of the times. So, from Westinghouse to Samsung & Panasonic technology has come a long way and thankfully the prices have come down too. Microwaves cook from the inside out John; that's why when climbing a Micro-wave tower ... be ever so careful or your blood will boil.
ESCALATORS: My oh my, I can recall the first time I was in the downtown Los Angeles (pretty certain) May Co. on Broadway and stepped on the WOODEN escalator running and whirring along. Yup, all the steps were made of wood and were well worn as I remember. I believe it was a narrow unit as well, causing a single file rather than side by side as is now common or at least they have the space for side by side standees on today's modern units. However, just last October I was in New York a few days, while there took the TMZ tour and the guide mentioned if anyone wanted to ride on history, go to the Macy's and on the upper floors we'd find wooden escalators. I did and they're classic & running good as new!
When I said, "How do they do that", didn't think someone would explain it
