Message: HHS Teacher Update: Dr. Phyllis Marguerite Selby Dabbs died peacefully on Wednesday, March 25, at her home in Riverside, California. She was 91. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at the Bakersfield Racquet Club. Born December 5, 1923, in Akron, Ohio, she was the youngest of the three children of Phyllis Barbara Sabin Selby and Warren Fowke Selby, a prominent Akron attorney. She grew up in Akron, attended public schools, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech from the University of Akron in 1944. She went on to earn Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in speech and higher education from the University of Southern California in 1952 and 1961, respectively. Dr. Dabbs began her 34-year career in public education in 1952 at Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, California, where she taught English and driver training, and served as the school librarian.
Hmmm, The first time I've ever heard that name. Checked El Molinos through 57 and no Miss Selby or Dabbs. Anyone remember that name? May be a Hawthorne school other than HHS. First librarian I find is Miss Rhodes. Thanks Leo, just checking and would like to add to Tributes but...

Message: I'm sure all our thoughts and prayers are with Ann Dye today. Hang tough Ann! God will not ignore the prayers of so many Cougars. For those of you who like to know what is happening on campus at HHS these days...I wandered into the new library on campus a few days ago. One item is missing from the new library...books!!!! My how the world has changed. I connected with some of the art teachers today to get help on a board honoring our national record holding mile relay team. The board will go on the front of the press box on Halcap when completed. The art department has taken over building 16 which was the science building in the 70s and I assume the 60s too. Going up the stairs I felt like I was running late for Mr. Andrade's biology class(remember those dissectible frogs ladies?. That's all that is new at the moment. Once again Ann, be strong, the Cougar nation is behind you and big Dan!!
Thanks Clark for the update.

Message: John, I noticed Hessie McKnight's birthday was yesterday. Remember way back when she was an issue on Feedback? I don't recall the results if she was, in fact, the T-Bird girl or some other cute girl. Was she the girl that took her Daddy's T-Bird that the BB's sang about?
I do not know and I guess if you googled "who was the girl blah blah blah" you'd probably get many absolute authentications. Maybe it was just a generic girl in a Tbird song (great 60s song, by the way). Who can really prove or disprove it without talking to the writers, Brian Wilson or Mike Love.
Here is one excerpt from songfacts.com:
There have been many rumors about the identity of the girl in the song, but when we spoke with Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love, he said: "As far as I knew, there was no particular person that was the inspiration for that song. It was more generic. Because, what kid, when they get their driver's license, doesn't want to borrow the family car and they go cruisin' through the hamburger stand, or they say they need to go to the library, but who knows? [Laughing] Sometimes other thoughts become more attractive."
Here are the most common stories we've heard about who the girl is supposedly about: A girl Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson was dating. She came from a rich family in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles and used to tell her father she was going to study at the library and needed his Ford Thunderbird to get there. Instead of driving to the library, she would hang out with Dennis at his apartment. Dennis would say, "We'll have fun till her daddy takes the T'bird away," and this became the hook.
Shirley Johnson England, whose father, Howard, owned the Utah radio station KNAK. Shirley claims that she used to borrow her dad's T-Bird, and one day got caught taking it to the drive-in instead of the library. The Beach Boys spent a lot of time at the station for promotional appearances, and when they heard this story, they wrote the song about Shirley

I'm sure there are many more if you really looked.

Message: Hey Dennis: That photo was taken at the Knight/Diaconian meeting Wednesday afternoon. I arrived a little early for track practice and one of the Knight vice-presidents is a quarter-miler on the track team and he invited me to attend the meeting. The clubs are now one joint club rather than two. I had pulled my Knight sweater out of moth balls and they got a kick out of that. A real nice group of young people carrying on in traditional Knight Diaconian fashion. They informed me they no longer have sweaters but they have maroon pullover hoodies(what else?!) I committed to buy one next week and the club said they would like to attend our next cruise night. On a different note we had a big track meet on Thursday at Culver City against Culver and El Segundo. For the first time in a dozen years the varsity boys won by beating El Segundo and they put up a battle with Culver. I felt like a very proud Cougar as all the athletes fought hard and one El Segundo parent said he was impressed with our athletes because they showed a lot of spirit and cheered on their teammates. The coaching staff has a five year plan to make us competitive with everyone in the South Bay. I want to beat Mira Costa very badly!
Hi Clark, That is great news about our track team. Thanks for the update. I had thought the Knights and Diaconians were dissolved years ago.

Message: John...its very sad to hear of the passing of Bob Melendrez. We both worked at TRW and had our HHS alma mater in common. In the early 90's we had an oldies garage band and Bob graced us by playing drums for our first few "gigs". Bob, of course, was a very talented musician and his involvement gave us a sense of legitimacy. Our Tuesday night rehearsals were the greatest of times. I'm sorry that I hadn't seen much of Bob since retiring. May he rest in peace.
