Message: Belated Birthday wish to Mrs. Baker. As John may have told you, I was on a Princess Cruise this week-end with most of my family. My youngest daughter shares the b'day day with Mrs. B. so we had a gathering in my cabin to celebrate and as I had promised, I raised a glass of the bubbly in your honor. So not only were toasts made in your honor all over the United States, but you were honored on the "High Seas" as well. Many more happy years to you!

Message: John Baker, you deserve a BIG round of applause for initiating and maintaining this website. It keeps everyone informed, connected and an invaluable, historical account that continues to grow. I was thinking back to my early years living in Hawthorne during the 1950's & 1960's with much appreciation of how life was back then and how the world has evolved since. A lot of our landmarks have disappeared; the streetcar tracks cursing through the center of Hawthorne Blvd., Plaza Theatre and my first piano lessons were taught by Ms. Barton. She rented a back room from Mr. & Mrs. Thorn on Truro Ave amid fields of long grass and Eucalyptus trees. My kindergarten teachers; first, Ms. De Lune (who left us mid-year after she was betrothed, and Mrs. Knocky took over for the remainder of our term and First grade whilst they built our third grade edifice at Eucalyptus elementary school. In 2nd grade, it was Ms. Fonda, then, Mrs. Kiehler in Third. My fourth grade teacher, was Mrs. Johnston. She had served in the Army as a Sergeant. Then, Ms. Hurt (Fifth grade) was a crusty old maid whose disdainful wrath wreaked havoc on all of us. She drove a 1954 beige Buick. I guess it helped her keep us in line. Tom Buckingham and I initially had Mr. Hilton for 6th grade before being moved to Mr. Joseph's class. At Hawthorne Intermediate, Mr. Gibb was my home-room teacher. He had just finished his tour with the Marine Corps., and treated us as though we were his new recruits. In the 8th grade, Mrs. Mingay was my home- room teacher; Mrs. Bucher (music appreciation), Mr. Weeblow(P.E.) and although I don't remember the gentleman's name for woodshop, he really taught us the finer points of woodworking. I built a solid 4-ft. high mahogany bookshelf that Cynthia (V-3) displays in one of her Las Vegas residences. During my 4-yr term at HHS, I had a very colourful teacher for English. Mrs. Tardy shared many stories with us about travelling to Russia, Germany and other interesting places. Mr. Semon (Science), Mrs. Jensen (Gen. Math), Mr. Nivolo (Spanish), and Coach Plum (P.E.). In the 10th grade, it was Mrs. Marks (English), Mr. Semon (Biology), Mr. Allen (Piano), Mrs. Jensen (Geometry), and Coach Plum again for P.E. During my Junior yr., it was Mr. Elmore for the first semester (English) then Mrs. Ton (latter half). Mr. Allen (Piano), Ms. Inez (Spanish), Coach Sevier(P.E.). Senior yr. was a trying time for me. Never thought I'd actually graduate. LOL Coach Sevier (P.E.) was a great coach. Mr. Pizarro (Spanish), Mr. Allen (Piano), Mr. Tena (Government), and Mrs. Marks (English).

Message: This is about Gary Ritter who died March 10, as reported by Dani. In Little League, you did not want to be the pitcher facing Gary. Gary hit more home runs than anybody. I don't remember how many in the season of our 12-year-old year, but I'm guessing it was about one every game. I didn't raally meet Gary until our freshman year at HHS. Gary was a sprinter--a really good one --on the C track team and I was a run-of-the-mill middle distance runner. But, I remember this scene as clearly as if it was yesterday. Hawthorne National Little League, 1959. I was the catcher for the Tigers and Gary was the batter for the Giants. I remember the pitch--a fastball, slightly to the inside of the center of home plate, about waste high--and the swing. It was seemingly effortless. And the crack or the bat hitting the ball. You didn't even have to look. You knew it was gone; just a matter of how far. I'll remember that moment for the rest of my life. RIP Gary.

And most of them are from the midwest. My pat answer is that I am really sorry but I am saving all the 8mm movies and notes I have for my own book (ain't gonna happen) ....And Doris..Like JB I feel equally shunned as I remember well you whispering in my ear that I had the best butt and legs in 4 counties. When they found out I went to HHS they spent the next two hours talking about the Beach Boys, asking questions and showing their knowledge of the group. I remember not being all that excited about the group 50 years ago but their influence was obviously world wide.
