Message: Thanks for the info, Clark! (I had to laugh at your post and my first thought was, "Tell us how you really feel!") I am left wondering a bit if Senior Square is even in their "redevelopment" plans or budget. If it is not in the budget, it looks like we may have to raise the funds ourselves. So I guess we'll wait to see what you find out.

Message: Robin Hood, I was on Mr. Wetzlers locker list. He had the combination to my locker, and could look inside anytime. I had a March 1959 Playboy in said locker. Opening my locker I find a "see me" note from the man, and the magazine gone. Cool as can be I went to his office to retrieve my magazine. Cool as he could be, there was no lecture, no swats, no stuffing in a locker. He handed me a March 1959 National Geographic, a ruler, fat black pencil, no eraser and a stack of that cheap scratch paper we had in school. I had to draw lines on the paper and copy all the articles in that NG. The NG and the pages I copied were left in his office everyday, so I couldn't take it home. I had to be in detention everyday until the task was completed. I had felt the paddle more than once, but copy work was the best punishment I was ever given. All three of my children learned about NG and copy work.

Message: HAPPY B-DAY JANET! ..oh to be your age again
...Hang in there Mary Ann and good luck on your westward adventure. And Donald I know I asked you this over 10 yrs ago but where did "Corky" Scheliga who grew up across the street from me on 133rd just east of Ing. Ave. fit in to your family? I'll always remember the "Freight Train" team picking him up on Saturdays en route to Lions. And JB..all this talk about how things changed a decade or so from when we attended HHS...I used to have an S.I. picture in my locker of the LSU defensive linemen, then called the "Chinese Bandits" because of all the wacky stuff they painted on their helmets. Today I would much rather have the latest SI swimsuit edition cover, and wonder how long it would take Mr Wetzler to find out and stuff me in the locker with it..

Message: I forgot to mention that the paper was known as the "FreeP." It regularly infuriated persons like Joe Pyne, Sam Yorty and others of the same kidney. Peter Fonda remarks in "The Limey" that the 60s comprised only 1966 and part of '67, which may be true.

I'm in the process of cleaning up my computer and changing all the passwords in my life due to a recent Nigerian stolen military pictures scam and now the Anthem Blue Cross hacking. Message: Art Kunkin's L.A. Free Press was our "underground" paper in the late 60s, offering "All the news that fits," and there was little or nothing that didn't appear in its pages, not unlike the internet now. We passed it around at HHS. It has come back to life as losangelesfreepress.com, where archive copies from '65 are visible. Those were the days, I guess....

My mom gave me some money so I could go to the liquor store with lots of newspapers so I could meet the requirement of having several sources. One of those papers was the Detroit Free Press and title was drug related but the article was a little too risque for my teacher to accept. (confession by this time I was rushing) There was a conference all right and I was scolded at school and home!

Mold was found in the dance rooms on the South side of the gym and I guess eradication was not an option. As I walked back to my car to head home I wandered into the boys gym to find the boys freshman basketball team beating El Segundo. It triggered memories of the fall of '72 when I played freshman basketball for coach "Dribbling Danny Litton" Good memories!

Message: Ray, my time at HHS in the 1970s was rather uneventful and about as exciting as watching cement dry (I actually enjoyed my time at El Camino and at Long Beach State much more). Jim and I enjoyed your story and I think both of us were thinking that you left us with a juicy cliffhanger. About the only HHS thing I can remember was that myself and another classmate in Social Studies (in our Junior year) had an assignment on the subject of, ahem, "adult entertainment" and we had to fill up a bulletin board with the subject matter that was mainly comprised of ads and stuff from the old L.A Free Press (remember that paper?). After the board was completed, our teacher had to get the opinions of other teachers to make sure we didn't cross any lines. It stayed up for a while and I seem to remember that other students would have their eyes glued on that board instead of looking in front during lectures.

Message: First, I have to say that I am sad that Don Burns passed he was a really nice guy, I sat and talked to him for some time at a Seal Beach car show several years back, I hadn't known him before that but from that time on I felt I knew him forever. RIP Don. The other reason I am writing is that I found another box of pictures belonging to my Mother-in-law when she was teaching at York School in the 50's and 60's, to my surprise her fourth grade class in 1955 was in there, it took my breath away, I know these kids, I recognize many of these kids but only remember three of them Myrtle Reeves, Margot Manriquez and Sylvia Carpenter, by the way I went to Eucalyptus elementary, that is why I was so shocked to see all of these faces. John I would like to send these to you as I am sure someone would like to see them. I also found two Christmas cards sent by Mr. McCammon, he and his children are pictured. (pretty interesting stuff). May I have your permission to send them to the address on this page?

Message: ll lettermen from the HHS track team will be pleased to hear this: I stopped by Halcap yesterday on the way home to see if there was a track team at HHS. I was pleased to find about seventy athletes with five coaches preparing for the upcoming season. There has not been a track meet at HHS since 2002 and there will be none this year because the tartan track is marked for yards and all races are in meters nowadays. After a long talk with the coaches it was clear that they are making a real effort to revive track at HHS. By the end of the afternoon I found myself recruited to be an assistant coach. I was an assistant to Kye Courtney 1980-82. and now I'm back again. I like Halcap, I feel at home there. The coaching staff will be at Cruise Night so we can all meet the men who are trying to improve our alma mater!

Message: Jim & Armand---JB must be related to the pretty blonde.. Because, when I reconnected with her, she told me to buzz off then said, " no one leaves a pretty blonde to go get their nose broken"! As she was talking I remembered a quote from John Wayne that really hit home, he use to say "Life is tough, but it's tougher when your stupid." So, not to let her have the last word, as she abruptly turned and walked away, I said " are we still on for the school dance this Friday?" That my friends is the -- rest of the story --.

Message: Hi John....Here is a story about one incident that occurred in my freshman year and concluded at the end of my senior year.. I wasn't much of a ladies man in high school, but I did have a crush on a pretty little blonde who was also a freshman.. It took me months of hand wringing to gather the nerve of asking to walk her home.. The first time I asked, she accepted.. Wow, I thought, what a lucky guy! Well, as luck would have it, we were half way to her house , me walking on air, when a kid ran up to us and told me, my best friend was in a fight with several guy, and I should go and help him out. I think that was my first big life decision to make, do I go help my buddy or stay with the gal.. In those days, being 13 years old the choice was already made, your buddies always came first.. So, off I go.. I arrived at the fight scene, there were several people watching, with about three guys ganging on my buddy.. The next thing I became aware of was Mack Baumgartner, (sp) of the Hawthorne Police Dept.. First guy he grabbed was me. The first words out of my mouth were " I didn't do anything, I'm just watching" The truth is, maybe I might have pushed someone? Anyway, off to the station for booking. Finally, a patrolman took me home about six o'clock, and the response of my folks and older brother is another story. Now the reason Sgt. Mack pulled me out of the crowd first, goes back to a situation at the Gunga Den just a couple of months prior to the above mentioned incident. Sgt. Mack and I had a run in, at a dance. I was in my macho demeanor and he was in his policeman mode. I was respectful in the confrontation, but somewhat arrogant. The last word the Sgt. said to me was, "Shelley we will meet again".. He knew what he was talking about! This story concluded when I enlisted in the service. All the papers were signed and I was ready to go as soon as I graduated. Well, a couple of days after turning in my paperwork, I received a letter from the recruiter stating I had an arrest record and a waver needed to be signed by the Hawthorne PD. So, off I go crawling into Sgt. Mack's office, for his help. By that time we were friends and he graciously granted my request. That's it John. I didn't mean to go on, and on, and on. After fifty- one years of marriage my wife calls me Windy, I keep reminding her my name is Ray.. I don't know why she does that?
