Message: Northrop YB-35 The Northrop YB-49 was a prototype jet-powered heavy bomber aircraft developed by Northrop Corporation shortly after World War II for service with the U.S. Air Force. The YB-49 featured a Flying Wing design and was a jet-powered development of the earlier, piston- engined Northrop XB-35 and YB-35. The two YB-49s actually built were both converted YB-35 test aircraft. The YB-49 never entered production, being passed over in favor of the more conventional Convair B-36 piston-driven design. Design work performed in the development of the YB-35 and YB-49 nonetheless proved to be valuable to Northrop decades later in the eventual development of the B-2 stealth bomber

Message: I seem to remember a fence/shield that was built at the end of the runway on the Prairie Ave end to shield the street from the jet blasts. Probably because the runway was too short.

Message: The definitive book on Northrop and the 'Wings' is Northrop Flying Wings. A History of Jack Northrop's Visionary Aircraft by Garry R. Pape with John M. Campbell (Schiffer Publishing Ltd. I got my copy at the Smithsonian Air Museum but it's probably available online as well. I remember someone saying that Northrop Field and Hawthorne Airport were separate fields with a street between them and the fences could be laid down allowing them to use the length of both runways. Gordon Bell hhs62 said he lived in Palmdale for a short while when his dad was there working on the Flying Wings.

Message: Wow, what a great photo. It would be interesting to have more information on it. If that's Northrop Field (Hawthorne Airport), that's a mighty short field to fly those big babies in or out.
I remember them flying over our house on Cedar Av when I was about 5 years old. Lots and lots of noise and smoke.

Message: Correction on the photo of the Northrop's flying wing bombers, they aren't YB-49's but are YB-35's. The description of the photo should be "Eleven YB-35s in various stages of completion outside the Northrop plant." Source -> http://www.456fis.org/JACK_NORTHROP_&_NORTHROP_AIRCRAFT.htm

Message: Cougar sighting. Not a classic like Linda and Judy but I seem to find all the young Cougars. I was having dinner tonight at the Olive Garden in Manhattan and struck up a conversation with the hostess. it was Giselle Morales HHS '12. I always find it interesting that the young Cougars have vastly different memories about high school in general. Giselle had our old campus for most of her time at HHS. When I drive by HHS nowadays and I think: "I know I went to Hawthorne High but that is my school only in name."
Hi Clark, no, that is your school. They've just updated it. Thanks for the sighting.

Message: The news of Jim Fox passing has me a little shaken I am remembering how the Fox family took me in as part of their family and treated me as one of their own. They uplifted me and encouraged me at a time I needed it most and got me back on track in a very positive way. Even though we lost touch for many years, when we finally found each other again, it was like no time was lost There was lots of laughter, hot chocolate and English muffins with marmalade at Chips, picnics on the beach, Oil painting classes with Caroline, wonderful dinners around their family table I could go on and on. They were a praying family so I know that we will reconnect in heaven Love you Mary, Del, Caroline, Charlie, and Jim. God bless your memory!

Emily, I think Stanley was in the class of 1963, kind of a little guy as I recall. I remember him from Hawthorne Intermediate but didn't really know him. Maybe others will have stories.

Message: Advice to all. Don't skip your annual flu shot. I almost always get it, but didn't for the past couple of years. Mistake. Just getting over the flu, with fever finally below 100. I hate needles but it is so much better to get the shot than the flu, even if the vaccine isn't perfect each year.

Message: It was really fun meeting Judy at CVS. For years she has been bringing laughter here to CT. And it was our white "rat" that Jeri Bailey and I named after Mr. Plotkin. We built a maze for the eighth grade science fair at Dana. Harry would wander through trying to find the cheese. The night before the fair my cat, Tom, ate Harry. Our exhibit was missing a crucial part! But we loved Mr. Plotkin (not algebra though, I am sorry to say).
The cat ate my homework. I used that a few times Thanks Linda.

Message: Cougar sighting: So, I'm down in Torrance getting my full body wax on special "Italian day." No Makeup, no hairdo, and inside thighs are still sticking together from remnant wax. (the girls know what I'm talking about) and stopped quickly at CVS where a very nice woman stopped me and said, "I know you from CT." It was Linda Dill. She mentioned Harry Plotkin and said that he was one of her favorite teachers, so much so that she once named a cat after him, Harry not Mr. Plotkin.) (are you laughing Harry??) Before leaving I started to whip out my cell to take a picture of her, but then I realized that she may want to take one of me in return, and then I'd have to kill her. There you have it.
Thanks Til, good one.

Message: Gee John, I NEVER have trouble loading Cougartown on my computer - perhaps it's because I have you on SPEED DIAL!! BTW, you should call me. We are overdue for our lunch date. And Jan and Judy, rats, I didn't win the Disneyland tix - but I'm thrilled that the Post raised some dough! How much are you still short for the roof repair?
Sue darlin', 12 days to the VFW breakfast. Grab Poppy and Grampa Daryl and come on down. I'll buy. Yeah, that'll happen. I'll be out for lunch in about a week and thanks for checking in.

After talking to tech support, we have been moved to another server so hopefully this irritating problem will be gone. Thanks all for your patience and understanding.

Message: Cougars....there's twenty-five hours left to enter our VFW fundraiser to help us repair our roof. The drawing for four Disneyland park-hopper tickets - valued at $600 - will take place tomorrow night - Friday night - at 8:30. You still have time to call me at 310-891-2375 and tell us how many tickets you want...and I will hold you to getting your check in the mail. However, calling me at home will end tomorrow at 3:30pm, then I'm off to help out at bingo. Then you have to call the Post to buy your tickets. Thanks to those who have called us for tickets and sent in their money. It's not too late to help us out. See the banner at the top of the Feedback page and check out our flyer. Happy New Year to all of you. May 2015 be your best year ever!
I was kinda hoping 2055 would be my best year ever.
