Message: My condolences to Mr. Anderson's family. He was one of my mentors and a very nice man. My senior year, I spent every Thursday PM in the print shop proof reading the weekly Cougar and learned so much about that end of journalism. Frank James '61 was the student "printer." Sympathy also to Al Geverink's loved ones. Even at his age he was a true gentleman and a good influence on his peers. Thanks, Rich, for your kind words about Al.

Message: To Alan Nelson, Class of '73 - Mary and I had big smiles as we read your Night Before Christmas. We enjoyed it very much. I bet your HHS English teacher would be very proud of you. You are so right. We are so fortunate to have John Baker to keep us all in touch and let us not forget the past. We were all fortunate to have been raised in Hawthorne at a time when the world was at peace and the economy was good, most of the time. All of us in the early HHS classes were at the start of rock & roll and muscle cars, enjoyed the beach at 26th street and good times with our friends at Frosty's on 133rd, just to name a few. We were the lucky ones! Happy New Year to all Cougars.

Message: Anyone know these former Hawthorne High Football Players? How does Florida State, ranked third by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, over second-ranked Oregon sound to you? Sounds good to Victor Rivas Rivers. Cautiously optimistic, he said, "I think Florida State is going to win. I think it's a real solid team, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the national championship game." Note the absence of a Joe Namath-type we-will-win-the-Super Bowl guarantee. Our Manhattan Beach-based source was Victor Rivas, his given name, when he was a Hawthorne High freshmen before moving to Miami and when he was a Florida State offensive lineman. He became Victor Rivers following college when he launched a successful acting career. His older brother, Tony, was a starting guard at Hawthorne. His son, Eli, now a student at Harvard and a member of the Hasty Pudding theatrical company, was a linebacker at Mira Costa High. Granted, Rivas' Seminole history comes into play when he projects the run to the national championship. However, he does have the understanding and feel for the game that comes from starting at the college level for three seasons, the final one for legendary coach Bobby Bowden, and from spending two training camps with the Miami Dolphins when they were coached by yet another legend, Don Shula.

Message: Just a couple of thoughts about Al Geverink. First his dad was a personal mechanic for Howard Hughes. Al had to get rides to a lot of baseball games from my dad. Al and my brother played ball together for years. We were freshman and Al and Rojo were the stud receivers on that great '59 football team. That spring during a track meet Al came over to where we were and wasn't wearing a shirt. Al did look like Tarzan. When UCLA recruited me they sent Al to do it. He helped a lot of people, me included. Glad I got to tell him at coach Chauncey's birthday party a few years back.

Message: My sincere condolences to Al Geverink's family. The class of '60 lost a good man. Al was the kind of guy you would want in your fox hole. Quiet but friendly to all who would engage him. Al always reminded me of the Greek statue of the man about to throw a disc. Rest in peace my friend.

Message: Tuesday, December 23rd, we lost another Cougar - Al Geverink, Class of 1960. Al had been diagnosed with and operated on for pancreatic cancer in March 2014 at the UCLA Medical Center and it later metastasized to his liver. Al had gone through 3 different types of chemo within the last 8 months. He never gave up. He fought it to the very end. This is a big loss to all of his family and friends. Al was one of a kind. Al attended Anza, R. H. Dana and HHS. While at HHS, Al lettered in tennis, football, baseball and track, where he set a new varsity record for the high jump in 1960. Al was selected Senior varsity athlete of the year in 1960. Attended first year of college in San Diego and transferred to UCLA in 1961. He played football for UCLA as a defensive free safety in 61, 62 and 63, including the 1962 Rose Bowl game. Al graduated with a degree in Geology and worked for Unocal Oil Company where he held multiple management positions throughout his career. This included 3 years in Malaysia. His hobbies included sailing and tennis. Al is survived by his wife Dee and two daughters, Lori and Carrie and sister Joanie, Class of '57. Al and I have been friends for 65 years. He will be missed greatly.
Very sorry for the loss of yet another Cougar. So sorry for you too Rich, I know Al met alot to you and your class. He will be missed but should be fondly remembered by many in the class of 1960.
