Message: Saw Tom's post about old Hawthorne Blvd. The Western Auto Store was owned and run by Lyle and Renna Hambry. Lyle got drafted into the 2nd World War and was stationed in Long Beach. His wife and my mom moved from Ames Iowa to Inglewood to be closer to him. Renna worked for the telephone company in Hawthorne and my mom went to work at Centinela Hospital. When Lyle got out at the end of the war they opened Western Auto in Hawthorne. They had a big female boxer named Millie and she roamed the store. Their son Dennie went to Morningside and eventually flew jets in Viet Nam and retired from the Navy. My mom and the Hambrys would go to reunions back in Iowa and people would always wonder what kept them in Califoria.
Great stuff there Gary. I remember that store had a Model T tire for sale, hanging on the wall. As a kid, and Model Ts long gone, I always wondered who would ever want that thing.

Message: 16 years worth of misprints and no recall? That's not the American way. This country recalls everything! Except our troops. I'm shocked, appalled, and outraged John. And of course I'm kidding. Love my shirt, wear it with pride, and will continue not to notice. Sides, only Cougars know what its supposed to say anyway...
Funny how that went unnoticed until Susan brought it up.

Message: I DEMAND A RECALL! Aw, just kidding. But Susan Adams's post re: "Friendship (s) sent me to the "memories" page looking for a copy of the HHS school song. I didn't find it but looking through there jogged some great memories; the Gunga Den, Utter's pool hall, Egg Town, etc. It also made me remember a few that I didn't see on the list. Meeks shoe repair,(remember when people actually repaired their shoes?). In the little set back in front of Meeks was Tucker's Shoe Shine stand; a real fixture on Hawthorne Blvd. I thought Tucker was one of the coolest guys in town. On the other side of the RR tracks from Meeks was Western Auto. They carried everything! And at the RR tracks between the two was a small RR Warehouse which often had a box car parked next to it. You could walk up onto the dock of the little warehouse and walk into the box car, which I thought was neat. That brought on my "Hobo" fantasies. On the corner north of there was Mastin's Drug Store with one of, I believe, two drugstore diners. I think the other one was in the Woolworth's 5 & 10 on the west side Haw. Bl. north of Mastin's. And then there was Wonder Market. Oh well, I guess this is where old men go when they can't get to sleep. Thanks for the memories John. You do a great job in this site!
Send your Tshirt Tom, I'll magic marker an "S" on it for you. Thanks for the memories too. Mastins, for a kid, was the best place to pilfer comic books. The rack was right by the front door. Also best cherry cokes on the Blvd. Who else has these memories of places long gone in Hawthorne?

Message: I too watched that Roosevelt Documentaries as well, I THOUGHT I heard "Lawndale" mentioned, but wasn't sure..Thank you for mentioning this!-Have a Cougar tee question-on the front of my tee, it says "Let Friendship begun", shouldn't it say "FriendshipS?" (plural) wasn't sure if all tees said this or just mine..or am I wrong on our song? Now, don't get your "dander" up, just wondering..no matter, I will wear it proudly to my 45th reunion! (PLEASE, no "hate" replies) LOL
I do believe it should say Friendships too Susan and if yours says it, they all do. Funny that they've been printed like that since 1998 and you just caught the mistake. No there will not be a recall.

Message: I was startled to hear that reference to Lawndale too in the interminable, but interesting, Roosevelt documentary. The city must have been very small, pre-WWII. It was still rustic when my parents moved to 160th Street and worked on Compton Blvd. at Prairie and at Will Rogers Intermediate, around 1950. Fields and chicken ranches....

Message: John I watched the Ken Burns documentary "The Roosevelts" this past week and in the 3rd or 4th episode they made reference to a woman who wrote a letter to the white house about how bad the depression had hit her family. Husband was out looking for work and she has 35 cents to her name. I think her name was Frances Rose something from Lawndale Calif. and lived on Montana Street in 1934. Interesting as there were only a few of these letters mentioned of the 150,000 a week FDR received. A well done series as always from Burns.
That's a long shot for sure there Robin. I thought this thing was broken and was only receiving BD wishes

Message: A quick Bill Schultz story for his birthday; It was a dark and stormy night. Bill was thirteen and coming off a 3 week injury issue. His coach asked Bill to pinch hit in a tie game. Bill went up left handed (to my knowledge Bill never hit left handed before or since) and hit a home run to win the game. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Message: Here in lovely Clovis, CA we have four high schools and in the part of town we live in we are just three blocks away from Clovis High School. Home of the Clovis High "Cougars". So I am constantly reminded of my home town high school and community. Last night was the second night of league play and I could hear the play by play on the public address system much the same as when I lived across Broadway on Burl Avenue just down the block from HalCap Field. As a reporter for the Cougar newspaper and a manager of the football team (along with Glenn) I was an intense fan of Cougar sports and activities as I could be. So much so, that some of classes aside from journalism and PE were occasionally neglected. Many thanks now to Glenn for putting together our '64 reunion. I am glad to see today that we should have around 100 Cougar alums, teachers, coaches, spouses and friends/family attending. I am glad to be a part of this Cougar Family and the Hawthorne community.
Well said Tom, Glenn has gone above and beyond to make this reunion the best it can be. Just a couple of weeks away. See all the 64ers there.
