Message: Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I've mentioned in a previous posting how we Mercurios discovered when my parents died, that they saved EVERYTHING from our childhoods. I am gradually getting to all the collections that applied to me, and I spent three hours yesterday looking at high school clippings that either I wrote (as the Inglewood Daily New sports reporter my senior yr for football, basketball, baseball and track) or that I was named in. It was fun seeing the 10 full Cougar issues from 66 to 69, and all the articles about those days and all the people mentioned. Betty Kean, I also have a photo of us and Georgina Beckstrom, Barbara Evett and Jackie Anastasi getting our Pen and Quill pins (which I still have due to my parents). Also, Betty, your Kean's Korner. Monte and the Crystals performing. Photo of Danny Litton pretending to cut Debbie Daugherty's long hair. The list of memories goes on and on.
Hi Ken, love this stuff too, like opening a time capsule. Thanks man and Happy Thanksgiving to you and Janet.

Message: Just to let everyone know how the football team finished up this year: Overall record 3-7., league record 1-4, ranking in California 759th. The team had two big signature wins, a romp on Leuzinger and a big homecoming win over Beverly Hills. This season was a big improvement over recent years when the team had zero wins! The new coach, Donald Paysinger seems to be a good man who the kids want to play for. I look for another improved year next year! Go Cougars!
Next year the CIF Championship.

Message: I don't know how many times I've tried to type this but ended up in tears till I couldn't see the monitor. A little over a month ago, my best friend and confidant for the last 55 years plus, and fellow 1957 HHS alumni, CHARLOTTE (KING) HERBRANDSON, lost her brave battle against a wicked and cruel foe, multiple myeloma, or cancer of the bone and bone marrow. I don't know anyone who could have fought more gallantly. I like the definition of "gallantly": Unflinching in battle or action; valiant: put up a gallant resistance to the attackers. b. Nobly resolute." This was the essence of Charlotte from the beginning, almost 10 years ago, till she died. She will always be my hero. I had, and have, so much respect for her and I will miss her more than I can say.
Aw Doris, so very sorry to hear your news. Please know that Charlotte's gallant effort was not in vain as now she's in a much better place. My condolences to you and Charlotte's family.

Message: I was a seventh-grader in Mrs. Wiley's class at Intermediate. Just before 11, the agitated school secretary came over the intercom to say that something had happened to the President. Moments later, we heard the radio news, then went out to P.E. to play soccer. At the end of that period, we lined up and Coach Sweeney pointed to the flags at half-staff and told us that he was gone. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth that afternoon, and I think that we left early. "Man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets," as the Proverb says.

Message: Fifty years ago today, 22 November 1963, I was listening to records on the stereo and ironing an outfit to wear later in the day. Homecoming at El Camino was scheduled for that week-end. My father called me from work and told me to turn the tv because JFK had been shot. Quite an odd feeling to witness the details on tv - almost surreal - as about 3 years earlier I had stood on a street in Providence, RI listening to him speak from the steps of city hall shortly before the election and the image of that day kept running through mind as the current events unfolded.

Message: I was on Boot leave, picking up my "Blues" from the Cleaners on Imperial, west of the Blvd., south side. The lady came out with my uniform crying and told Pattie Lee and I that the President had been shot. Our generation had never experienced anything like that before and can only be compared to 9/11. A couple of years later, on my way home from overseas, driving north from San Diego with a car load of sailors, it appeared as though the whole city was on fire. The Watts Riots were well underway. Thus came the second traumatic experience and life was just not the same after that.

Message: Fifty years ago...what a sad day. Was at the Burkett's house with Mrs. Burkett, my sister-in-law, her brand new baby and my daughter who was only a few months old. I think we just stared at the TV in silence and disbelief. Fred was working nights and I remember all the TV stations were blacked out except for some updated news. From the day of the shooting until after the burial, there was continual funeral music playing on all black screens that made me feel a little anxious and creepy being alone with just my baby at night. I also remember Kennedy's visit to the Torrance Mall when he was running for office. Mrs. Burkett was so excited about seeing him. No more camelot to be seen since.

Message: I was at a stop sign, while making delivery's for UPS.. A teary eyed women in the car next to me, told me about President Kennedy being shot. My next customer let me watch the replay on her TV. I had several more stops to make. If I would have had a bucket, it would have been filled with tears, by the time I finished my route.. Sad day for all.

Message: With the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK here, everyone is probably flashing back to where they were 50 years ago today! I was in my kindergarten class at York school I think Sharon Bierman and Mark Manning were there with me. Our teacher, Mrs. Coluchi came into the room crying and said" The president was shot and killed!" A few kids started crying but most five year olds didn't get what a huge deal it was. I'm glad that day is far away, very sad for all of America.
I was working at Virtue Bros on Century. Left work mid day and watched it all unfold on TV. Very hard to believe at that time. Like a dream.

Message: Thanks, John. The film will be called Love is Strange (do they have that right?) and stars Lithgow and Alfred Molina with Marissa Tomei (I wasn't in any scenes with her, but did get to talk to the other two who were very nice and charming---JLi had a sketchbook in one season as a prop and I asked him what was in it. He said it was sketches he had made from a drawing class and proceeded to show me a notebook full of nudes---so now I can say John Lithgow showed me his etchings, LOL).
Thanks Pat, actually his sketchings

Message: I would also like to wish Maureen Trott a happy birthday. The Trotts lived across the street on the corner of 118th St. & Sundale. It was always fun to watch all the girls that used to hang out over there. I can still see her dad Frank come home after work, park his blue, or was it green truck in front of their house, walk in through the white picket fence and up the walk to the front door. Good memories.
