Message: One more Morgan story. One night we were sailing to Avalon, no moon, dark, so we had to navigate by the compass. I had to go below for something & gave Fred the helm. I wasn't gone one minute & somehow he turned the boat around 180 degrees & we were still on the same tack. If this was a class, he would have gotten an 'A' in seamanship & an 'F' in compass reading.
You wouldn't need a compass, I would have seen the lights on shore and knew I was going the wrong way Thanks Milt for some great stories.

Message: My Fred Morgan story is a little different than the others. I was put into band in my freshman year by my counselor because I told her I could play drums. So I show up for the 1st band class and I'm standing there, sticks in hand and Mr Morgan says "I can see by the way you hold your sticks you're a ROCK N ROLL drummer", I want you to hold them like a real drummer...... A few days later I was having a cigarette across the street from campus and he spots me. He tells me 1. His band members can't smoke, 2. I'd better tuck in my shirt cause his band members don't walk around looking like bums and 3. Get my hair cut, I look like a hippie and his band members..... From there on I did everything I could do to make his life miserable when I was around. Even to the point of refusing to show him I could do a paradiddle during the final exam. We did not get along. He flunked me. However over the years, I've told the story of how I flunked band class at some of our gigs we've played. It makes for a hearty laugh and oddly enough I now think of Mr Morgan fondly.
Thanks Cliff, yet another satified Fred Morgan band member.

Message: Another Morgan story. We were going scuba diving off Palos Verdes. The trail down was about two feet wide & the cliff was just about straight up & down. Loaded down with tanks, inner tubes (for abalone) & backpacks, the trail got very narrow. Fred was leading the way with Dave Carter, Bill Malcolm (both HHS class of '60) & myself following. All of a sudden I saw arms & legs go flying by. In the middle of the path were 2 snakes wrapped around each other fighting. He said he saw a snake with two heads. What's amazing is that he didn't touch any of us going by, & he passed us on the down side of the cliff. That's how thin he was.
A two-headed snake must be baddd-juju for scuba divers.

Message: Hey Milt....looks like you're still producing that "YU WAT?" wine?? Good stuff. So nice to see the picture of Mr. Morgan and it brought back lots of fond memories for me as well. My story about him is remembering sitting in band class every afternoon with the rest of the Flag girls and majorettes and not a whole lot to do while the band was practicing if we weren't on the field marching. One day he announced we girls would now have to learn to play some kind of an instrument rather than just sit in class. My violin wouldn't work in a marching band, so thanks to Darrel Boesiger and Dennis Herbst, I got to play a trombone! What a riot that was and my "learning" was great entertainment for those two! Fun times.
I'll bet Tommy Dorsey was aflippin' in his grave Thanks Janet.

Message: Picture this: October 24th 1969 afternoon band pratice, me with the flu, I tell Fred Morgan that I'm sick and am going home, Fred asked what was wrong, flu I said, he asked me if my parents drink, I said once in a while, he asked if there was bourbon in the house, I said yes, he said to go home, mix a shot of bourbon with hot water and honey and drink it down, then rest for a while and you'll feel better and then get back here for the football game. I did as he said but I didn't come back for the game. I couldn't find a shot glass so I poured what I thought was enough......
Good one Bob

Message: Mr. Morgan Story: Mr. Morgan asked the HHS Production Band (aka: Pep Band, Dance Band, "Night Owls"), to play at a wedding reception for a CVUHSD superintendent. We agreed, as long as he played piano. On the appointed Saturday, the band arrives at the reception hall, and no piano. One of us has a pick up truck, and one of us knows how to slip the lock on the HHS band room door, so off we went to "borrow" the upright piano from the band room. I do not know who had the bigger surprise, us when a HPD motor officer stopped beside us at a red light while he looked at the HAWTHORNE HIGH stenciled on the back of the piano, or Mr. Morgan, when he arrived at the reception, and there was a piano there; wait a second, this piano looks awfully familiar. Oh the things we had to do to earn an "A" back-in-the-day.
Now see I knew there were Fred Morgan stories out there Thanks again

Message: Cougar teacher sighting (more or less). On his way to Lake Tahoe, Fred Morgan took a side trip up to God's country, Oroville, the land of gold, zinfandel, syrah, & marijuana. We don't grow the latter. For those who didn't know Dr.- Reverend- Mr. Morgan, he started teaching music at H.H.S. in '56 at the age of 20. He was with the school district for 22 years. Brian Wilson was in his music writing class & received a poor grade on the composition he wrote (do to the standard methods of chord movements being taught then). Brian said I'm going to be a music writer & Fred said you'll never make it. When I took the class, Fred played the piece I wrote & said I copied it from somewhere. I told him I thought what I wrote sucked. He gave me a 'C' If it was so good that he thought I copied it, should have got an 'A', if I copied it, an 'F'. Why a 'C'?!!. He never told me. The final grade for the class was an A & I'm sure Brian got the same. Fred finally retired last year as the Chaplain for a hospital in Santa Maria. He's now a Captain in the civil air patrol, When we went sailing, he would get seasick walking out on the dock, I'd hate to to be in an airplane with him.
Hi Milt, Dr. Fred hasn't changed a bit. Thanks for the story, picture and nice to know you are both doing well. One question I would like him to answer: Was there a Baby Grand or Grand piano in the music room in the years when Brian was in music class, say around 1957-60?

Message: I want to put a "shout out" to all Cougars within a reasonable driving distance of HHS: This Friday is the homecoming football game against Beverly Hills at 7:00 p.m. Cougartown has thrown a lot of money at the football program in recent years, I don't think it is asking too much to show up physically at Halcap once a year for three hours to cheer on the team that represents our school. Our new head coach, Don Paysinger is trying to produce a program we can be proud of. We need to do our part and provide a little moral support for these young men once a year! We had a group of about fifteen or twenty two years ago and it was a good time had by all. I certainly hope we can at least match that figure on Friday! Be there or be square! See you Friday!
Also we need some convertibles from the 40s, 50s, or 60s to transport our Homecoming Queen and her Court. If you have any of these said vehicles or you know someone who does, please let me know. See you ALL Friday night at Halcap, 7pm and thanks very much for all you do, or did, to help out our Sports program.

See the Beach Boys night was also a big success... how much can we take... and now there's a Halloween Party and dinner coming up this Sunday at the Haw. VFW. Look to the right for the link to the flyer. Seems like as soon as fall set in everything started taking off again. If you plan to attend the Halloween dinner please call the bar and RSVP to help us plan the food. (info is on the flyer) My sainted husband will be in the back kitchen again baking Lasagna. Could it be that I'm not a good cook and this is the only way he gets to eat???? Maybe~~but there was nothing about food in the marriage vows! See you all there. Judy D B

Message: What a great concert on Sunday night. Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys are such a classic and part of America's true musical history. I was so happy to be able to take my granddaughter to the Greek to see them and especially Brian as she had not seen him before. She has been singing Beach Boys tunes since she caught her first wave at Santa Cruz when she was 12. Just proves how multi-generational their music is! Also, so nice to see all the really special Cougars who were there. That Jeff guy wasn't too bad either...WOW!! Rock On....ok back to work now. Janet
