Message: Route 66 brings back a lot of memories. My parents, two sisters and myself left southern Illinois in 1953 for Hawthorne. Dad loaded everything we had including mom and us 3 kids and a dog in a 1948 Plymouth. The trip took almost a week, he never drove over 45 mph. We slept alongside Route 66 most every night, dad and I on the ground, mom and sisters in the car. All meals were along side of the road on a coleman stove. We rolled up in an army blanket less than 10 feet from the road, imagine doing that now. Never forget going through Needles in Sept. It was certainly a better life in Hawthorne once we got there. Loren
Sounds like a fun trip Loren.

Message: Jan and I would like to thank all our HHS alumni for always showing up for the Haw. VFW breakfast and supporting our post. Where else can you get all the food for $8.00 and all that fun while chowing down. Good to see a couple of new faces as well. Now we do it all again at Foster's on Sat. night. Point of interest. Had breakfast with Chef Martinez of the ROTC. Told him that the post will have another fund raiser for HHS. I don't think anyone donates from CT anymore, but it's on a banner in feedback, so maybe it's time to pay forward a little. If everyone gave a dollar, we'd go over the top. I'll hit our bingo crowd up again with a pass the hat to get it going. And now, I have to start preparing my body for cruise night. Use to take me 5 minutes to get ready for an event, now it takes me 5 days. (how many alumni 60 and over are understanding exactly what I mean).
Thanks Judy, you, Jan, and the rest of the VFW team do such a great job on the breakfast, how can we stay away. Yes the donations have really slacked off this year. Thanks for passing the hat.

Message: The yellow-painted pastrami/hamburger stand on the SW corner of Hawthorne Blvd. and Rosecrans was called Art's Dip; or, colloquially, just "the Pastrami." My low-life friends and I would go there late in the evening, buy a cup of ice for a nickel, then park in the back of the lot where we could pour our booze over the ice and drink it without anyone bothering us. This was when we were underage of course!
No wonder Art's went out of business

Message: You'll remember Hawthorne's finest used to hang out there at Tommie's. One night, the story goes, someone crawled under one of the cop cars, which always backed in to park, and put a chain around the rear axle and to a post. The guy then got into his short (rod), pealed out down the Blvd. The cop, of course, left his rear-end scraping down on the black top. This was long before American Graffiti. True story. I know, I know, but I heard it from a friend of mine who heard it from a friend of the guy who did it.

Message: Yes, My Mom worked at that little Hamburger stand in the early fifties. Never knew it as "ptomaine Tommy's" though. I would be interested in knowing the story behind that one. She also worked at the little stand across the street from Sears & Roebuck. Was the Tommie's Hamburger stand in the photo located next to the Chevron station on the NE corner of Hawthorne and Imperial?
Yes it was.

I remember a Pastrami stand there in the mid 50s. Small place out on the corner.

Message: Hey John, regarding the picture of Tom's Burgers on the corner of Hawthorne Blvd and Imperial Hwy, I noticed that there isn't a # next to it. Does that mean it is/was the original? I loved (and still do) their burgers and patty melts! My significant other is from Ventura and he says the original was in his neck of the woods. Hope he is wrong 'cause he is always trying to "best" HHS (he always refers to us as Southers'). I just ask him where is Ventura again?
Hi Terri, Yeah where is Ventura anyway Actually our Tommie's (with an "ie") wasn't part of the change of Tommy's (with a "y") burger places. The original Tommy's....I really don't know where it was but I'll bet someone here does..
