Message: Cougar sighting - while shopping at the Torrance Target this morning I ran into Andi Dew (class of 62) and her beautiful 95 yr old mom, Lois. Andi is also just as gorgeous as ever and really paid you nice compliments, John, for all you do on Cougartown and for the alumni.
Hi Karen, Andi is a good friend and has been since our good old HHS days. Glad to hear Andi and her Mom are doing fine. As a side note, Vince Jesse HHS class of 1983 is Andi's son.

Message: Update on the Halcap sign: The paint job is nearing completion to my satisfaction. Principal Newell said he will have maintenance put it back up where it belongs when I am done. I had to use oil based paint which I haven't used since Mr. Jacobson's wood shop class at Hawthorne intermediate, 41 years ago. I'm going slow and doing it right because I'm sure this is the last paint job the old sign will ever get. I have to keep reminding myself that no one will be closer than about five yards from the sign but I want it to look as good as the first day it went up. It was important for me to do this because some of the best days of my life were spent on Halcap field, with teammates and watching varsity games as an underclassman! In the summer of '73 coach Plum had me dragging a truck tire filled with cement up and down the field to build up my legs. On real hot days he'd take the whole summertime P. E. class over to the pools for a refreshing dip.
Good job Clark, can't wait to see the sign.

Message: I want to thank all of our Cougartown friends for all the prayers, condolences, memories and kindness shown the Crotty family. John loved growing up in Hawthorne and we talked often about all the fun times and great people. He could name every family on the block where we grew up, both sides of the street and around the block. There were friends at John's celebration that I hadn't seen since high school. Thank you all so much. Hugs, Noreen
Noreen, John will be fondly remembered by me for a long, long time. One of the great guys of Hawthorne.

Message: When I was 19, I bought a light blue 1960 TR3 because my girlfriend at the time fell in love with it. I bought it for $800 from a small used car lot on Hawthorne Blvd. in Inglewood. Several years later while it was parked in my parents driveway, a guy backed out of the driveway across from me and demolished the entire rear clip. I was I'd kept it!
Alan, never buy a car because your girlfriend loves it

Message: Could Uncle Phil be "Uncle Phil's Touchy-Feely Show"? I found an obscure reference to "TVs Uncle Phil" from a 1950s "Sex Ed" film. The write-up mentions the short lived 1958 TV show. I couldn't locate any further info on him, though.
Yeah I saw that on You Tube and think that's the guy, and show, but just a parody. Can't get a line on it anywhere. May have to call KTLA. Thanks Alan.

Message: Two Cougartown things made me smile today..The first was the photo of the Lighthouse with the white Triumph TR3 parked out front. What a bitchen car. Made me drool more than normal. Reminds me of when Lana Beery's dad let me use his red TR4 to take his daughter to our junior prom in the Palisades. I wanted to show my appreciation by bringing the car back with a full tank. How was I to know that it only ran on Premium Gas? It took him,... and the car..., a long time to get over the fact that I filled it up with cheap 87 octane fuel. The second thing was watching the Jerry Miles "Surfing USA" video with the great photos of all the famous surf spots mentioned in that song. Nice Job, Jerry!
Loved that 100+ octane man.

Message: As you can imagine, there is a real rivalry in these parts between Giant's fans and Dodger fans. I recently noticed that they have been referring to Chavez Ravine again rather than just Dodger Stadium. Just curious as to the reason if anyone knows. I just remember the big conflicts when they took all those homes in the ravine to build the stadium. I was a huge Dodger fan at a very early age, thanks to Ernie and Don! Also, thanks to those who called about the fires around here, all is OK, I just headed to Pismo for a week to escape! Gordon thanks for the concern!
I would say Chavez Ravine is where Dodger Stadium is located. Did not know there were fires in your area, Janet, glad everything is OK.

Message: The best prize on Handy Hints was the box of "Cup 0 Gold" candy bars. Dorothy also did a lot of "City at Night" shows with a couple of different co-hosts. Anyone ever go out to Auction City on Sat/Sun to meet the wrestling stars. The best sign off at the end of programming was the F-104 flying high as the poem "High Flight was read, "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings" I think that was channel 9 in the late 50's.

Message: Hey John, I remember when the TV stations used to play the Star Spangled Banner before sign off. Stations don't sign off anymore but wouldn't it be great if they would find a time to just play the National Anthem during some part of their broadcast time. How cool would that be? Bob and I were talking about the curfew announcement just the other day.. "It's 10 o'clock, do you know where your child is?" Maybe if curfew got enforced again it would stop a lot of problems.
Jerry, I tried to find the voting site on Yahoo but could not. Any clues on how to get to it. The Beach Boys need to win this one! "Margaritaville, pahleez....doesn't fit anywhere when the Boys have a monopoly on summer! Someone mentioned Stan Chambers. I saw last night that he turned 90 yesterday and just retired two years ago. The guy is so great. Well, hope to see you all at the VFW breakfast on Sunday, and at Cruise nite.
I thought Stan had passed away already, Happy Birthday Stan. Yes, there should be a time slot for the Star Spangled Banner. Maybe they could give up just 1 commercial a day. Thanks Karen and will see you and Bob at the VFW next weekend.

Message: Speaking of Gilmore Stadium, on Thursday night August 8, 1940, the Sixth Annual Screen Stars' Classic Comedians vs. Leading Men Baseball Game, a gala charity event to raise money for Mount Sinai Hospital was held. A suprise member of the Leading Men was Boris Karloff, fully attired as the Frankenstein Monster. Karloff wore the complete Monster makeup that was applied by Jack Pierce. Karloff lumbered out to bat and received a big laugh as he put on his spectacles so he could see the ball.

Message: The LA Dons were a professional football team that played in the All- American Football League from 1947 to 1949. They played in the Coliseum. The Rams moved to LA from Cleveland in 1950. Didn't remember them either. Bob Hope was a part of the Dons ownership.
I thought the Rams moved here in 46.
