Message: Wasn't Steve Bilko the player that hit 60 home runs but it was minor league so it was never recognized as any kind of record?
I think Steve did hit 60 in the PCL. Someone will know.

Message: What memories of the old home run derby show on Saturday morning. I remember seeing competitions between Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew among others. It was really old school stuff and refreshingly better than the glamorous Hollywood stars like shows at the All Star games. I think the winner would get $100 or a new washing machine. Another great example of how things were better in the old days. I remember going to see Steve Bilko do some batting practice and he had arms like Boog Powell or a modern day tight end. They all rolled up their undershirts like like a 50s hood type with the cigs folded into the sleeve.
Yeah Steve was a BIG BOY.

Dick Lane sold early 50s Chevrolets the same way on the Spade Cooley Show.

Message: While on the Sandy's Dreams show we would have a different theme & setting each week & so went across the street to Western Costumes on the Paramount lot to get costumes for the upcoming show. KTLA was owned at that time by Paramount Studios. Got to play with the real Beany & Cecil puppets on their set. Got to meet a lot of great people some of which Marilyn mentioned. Also Tim McCoy, Iron Eyes Cody, Doye Odell. The only jerk we came in contact with was Dick Lane, a legend in his own mind! Too important to talk to a bunch of kids. I also remember my Dad taking me to Angels games at old Wrigley. I'm thinking it was on Avalon in South Central? SF Seals, Oakland Oak's, San Diego Padres. Gilmore was next to the Pan Pacific. I remember a miniature golf course close by?
Sacramento Solons, Portland Beavers....Thanks Tom, Please don't keep that Dick Lane thing inside you. You will die young See you on Cruise Night, maaaann!!

Message: Baseball at Wrigley Field was the old Pacific Coast League Los Angeles Angels, but San Francisco 49ers? I remember them as the San Francisco Seals. Also, Wrigley Field in downtown L.A. was the site of the old show "Home Run Derby."
I was a Hollywood Stars fan.

Hey Don, Thanks for the sighting and we'll see you in 2 weeks at Fosters.

Message: I am not a computer person don't do face book and have never before put anything on this site. But I enjoy some of the stuff on Cougartown. The KTLA listings were fun, I don't remember the year, early 50's, we had the 1st TV on our block we watched Beany and Cecil and kids would come over to watch the test pattern. Life was so much simpler then!!
Remember when stations would sign off the air at night, they would show a waving American Flag and play the Star Spangled Banner, then either go to a test pattern with a 400HZ tone our just go straight to hissing snow. Thanks for your two cents, Clifford. Feel free to add to Feedback any time.

Message: Great KTLA programs. Sandy's Dreams Sat. 7:30. I was on that show for about 6 months. Lee Aker, Rusty of Rim Tin Tin fame was also on the show.
I also remember a show called Playcrafters Club that had kids for an audience.

Message: Dorothy's partner was Dick Garton. Not sure of spelling. I always thought their names were confusing. Gardiner and Garton. We always watched their shows. I don't remember the shows on the TV listing you have, we didn't have a TV in 1948, not until early 1950's. TV was so different in those days with KTLA hosting most of their own shows with regulars Dick and Dorothy, Dick Lane, Stan Chambers and Kenny Grauer. Once again not sure of spelling. They each did several shows. Probably for little money in those days. Some were bad shows compared with todays but since TV was new it was really exciting.
Hi Marilyn, Dick Garton, that's it. Bad Shows or not, they were in their infancy and trying different things to see what worked, I guess. Heck, they could have had snail races on TV in the early 50s and people would've watched it. Of course "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" is such an upscaled high brow show compared to "My Three Sons"

Message: JB1...I have to think Cougars of the 70s and later probably changed websites this morning wondering WTF are they talking about! But lets not forget Cliffy Stones Hometown Jamboree w/ Molly B.,Ernie Ford etc. I like Spade till he offed his wife in front of his daughter. That had to be hard on the ratings. But 'whoa nellie" wrestling was the best. My granpa Hood swore Mr. Moto used the "sleeper" too much. It was yesterdays HGH scandle. Dorothy Gardiner Denny....really? did she give you any "handy hints"?. And who was her male counterpart on that show?...Well back to the future troops....
I'm thinking it was Dick Gardiner as Dorothy's partner on Handy Hints. It seems television has morphed from Handy Hints to Turtle Man with Wrestling still hanging in there.

Message: In 1948 KTLA was the whole TV guide and the only one broadcasting till channel 2 came on the air. The grocery market used to give those cards out at the check stand. Anyway I do remember the programs. Before I saw any antennas on houses there was a store downtown Inglewood with this tiny RCA television in the window and there was always a crowd around it when there was a broadcast. It had a price tag of several hundred dollars and was the only one he had but he would lower the price one dollar every day till my father couldn't take it anymore and he bought it and a kid of magnifying bubble to make the picture look larger. ~ I had talked with Dorothy Gardiner and she was at a channel 5 picnic in Glendale about ten years ago.
Thanks Denny, I bet you still have that TV

Message: Although that was the year I was born, I certainly remember Wrestling at the Olympic Auditorium. But I think it was probably not the 1948 viewing that I recall. The others that are familiar are Spade Cooley and my brother's favorite, Hopalong Cassidy. I also noticed that they actually broadcast the Gallup Poll. I wonder if it were measuring TV viewing.
Don't remember the Gallup Poll but do remember Police Call where they would put up Wanted posters.

Message: Jim Raines, I don't know about the Hawthorne Elementary District, but Wiseburn S. D. has albums of the class pictures, some labeled with pupils' names. You might get in touch with the school district to see if they might also have them available for your classes. One of the best times I had at the HHS c/o '64 turns 64 reunion was sitting together with former classmates trying to identify our old friends.
