Message: Well Cougars, it was a very special time in Sacramento and Mike Mecey is just simply the best! Our little gathering was super special. I have been sort of overwhelmed by the USA. It has been a long time since I have been here. Our family will be celebrating my mother's 90th birthday on June 19th. I leave for Greece on June 21st. This is still very much the land of opportunity. Count your blessings! Be happy and healthy all you Cougars. Stay true to your school!
Hi Jim, Sounds like you've had a fun visit so far. Hope your last week plus in the states is just as joyous and a BIG Happy Birthday to your Mom too.

Alright c/o '63 planning committee, can you confirm or deny?
Yes the REAL Beach Boys at the Greek. Should be a fun show "fer shure".

Message: A gathering of the NorCal 61ers. Last week Jimmy Peppers flew up to Sacramento during his visit from Greece. He stayed a few days with Ginny & I. We had a great visit; trips to Tahoe & the obligatory tour of the Capitol & other places in the Sacramento area. But the best of all was a mimi-gathering of some of the NorCal 61ers. We had a dinner at my home and the following 61ers gathered around to break bread with our special European guest; Larry Smith & wife De (Reno, NV), Royal Lord & wife Pat (Live Oak), & Kathy Barnes Drager & hubby Larry (Davis).... and of course Ginny & myself. Kathy brought her old class books from Hawthorn Intermediate & the HHS El Molino's. It was fun looking through these old books and seeing what we all wrote to Kathy all those many years ago. Royal & I see each other a couple times a year since he moved to No Cal. Larry & I meet up again a couple of years ago. Jim & I stay in touch by email & Skype... But I haven't seen Kathy since graduation... 1961... even though she only lives a few short miles down the road... John, thanks for Cougar Town. This Cougar gathering should get double points over a simple Cougar sighting.
Great group of Cougars there boy. Thanks Mike and glad you all had a chance to get together. That is what it's all about.

Message: Does anyone know how to get ahold of David Burket, HHS c/o '64. He was using his sister's email address, but a query I sent bounced back to me. If anyone has his contact information, would you be so kind to send it to me. There seems to be enough interest in a Class of '64 reunion in 2014. If I haven't contacted you yet, and you are interested in attending, let me know at the email address above. Thanks.
Glenn, Don't see a David Burket on the class of 64s list.

Message: Hey! Summer cruising season is heating up here in Nevada. Hot August Nights is coming soon. Every Wednesday night a lot of people go to our local A&W to hang out and show off some nice rides. Many other events happen all summer-almost too many to list. The Rockabilly Riot is at the Grand Sierra Hotel. Car show, swapmeet, drags burnout contests, Music, all fun stuff. Way back when Haytown Blvd. was a big thing in our area. Bigger yet and longer lasting was Van Nuys Blvd. on Wednesday night. Anyone out there that made that scene have any stories to share? They now allow cruising on VNB the 2nd Wed. of each month after many years of prohibition since 1980. I was there the nite they shut it down-nearly caused a riot = people were pissed! The cops trying to direct traffic were pelted with bottle rockets, firecrackers, and saw at least one Big Mac hurled at police. In some ways cruising was more fun back when the government considered it to be a public nuisance. Now the cool car scene is a big industry. And we all got older and maybe a little mellower. Still fun to participate in this-keeps me feeling young. I hop into the 73 Nova-crank up the tunes and ride - kind of feels like a time machine of sorts. If anyone out there is attending HAN give me a email. Will try to meet up if possible. Until next time Best Wishes to all. BC 73.
Hi Bob, You missed the REAL cruisin' man as I think you were probably about 4 Yes it was all fun no matter which era but your bro Marty would remember it, God rest his soul. There were fun times on Hawthorne Bl (&VNB) back in the early 60s for sure.

Message: Good morning John...I understand if you feel you may not want to post my comments on something Bob Faulkner recently commented on regarding the horrific deaths of 5 young AMERICAN teenagers who died in a car crash over the Memorial Day holiday. What really struck me was his segway into his comments...." On a light side " he says and he goes on to say...the horrific accident ONLY sparked his interest because he read somehwere they were out celebrating their immigration???? Really..Instead of feeling empathy for their families who lost their children, your first inclination was to disparage them...well first of all that was not true...but even so what if it was? They were celebrating the Memoral Day by going to the beach and yes they were being very irresponsible and were distracted and they paid the ultimate price by the drivers inexperience and fast car. But to say you Bob don't remember wanting to wrap yourself around a tree so you infer that these young teenagers WANTED TOO!!! And then you say you are glad you were born American!!!!! Just for your information which you failed to get before you stereotyped these young people. They were born American citizens, two of the young victums were sisters. Their families were American citizens...but how you want to make this absolute horrible tragedy for 5 families into something about immigration is just unconsionable and in very very bad taste!!!! Yes my comments about his very insensitive and callous comments are not what the people of this site come to look at ...but I just had to clarify alot of his very wrong assumptions about people he doesn't know a hill a beans about. I appreciate you John for allowing me to vent and I completely understand if you feel this site is not the appropriate place for my feedback...but conversely I do not feel his comments about the deaths of young men and women were either. Thank you
Hi Madeline, I absolutely understand your feelings and how upset you are. I apologize for letting that one slip in and should have dumped it as it had nothing to do with Hawthorne, HHS, "the good old days", etc. Please accept my apologies. Bob, please do not respond.

If Les was in Senior Square it was not wise to try to run through or the traditional head first dump into the trash cans was unavoidable. At Docs' gym in Hawthorne, Les was known as "Dinosaur". A big guy but a gentle guy as I remember. Happy birthday Dinosaur!!

He asked if I was ready for our 40th reunion next year. I can't believe its been that long already. Anyone know where time goes?
Speaking of alumni from the 60s, just found out that my neighbor 2 doors down is HHS62 Jim and Ruth Beltran Reale's niece (Leonard Reale's HHS58 daughter)....small world people. Have a great weekend David and all of our Cougar family.

Hi Peter, No Beach Boy Museum. I think you're talking about the Hawthorne Historical Museum located in the old police station. Don't know the address but if you go to the Hawthorne Library on Grevillea, the museum is right across the parking lot. You'll see the sign. They are open 11am-2pm on Saturdays and I think 10am-2pm on Tuesdays

Message: Actually, I saw a picture of the matchbook cover that had the address. It mentioned the Neptune club also and other info. Can't recall the sight but if you Google Del Mar and matchbooks from the 50s it will show it. I think I entered it as Delmar. Not too sure. Anyway it was same address I posted earlier. We used to go there all the time....but I can't remember the streets. It also mentioned the restaurant was open 24 hrs a day. I didn't know that either.
Thanks Jean

Message: In my recent move, I was going through some boxes of stuff that my mother gave me. In one of the boxes was a baseball wrapped in old newspaper, there it was my first home run, written on the ball along with a note that read, "June 14, 1957, center field, home run, won 5-2, lead off the game, went 2 for 3, hit over building into the tot-lot. It was off of Ken Umsted. I remember Dennis Lord and my mom's happy faces!

Message: Thank you Bob Fraser. I knew I had heard that one before but just could not conjure up the name. Bardahl. Now that's an oldie. Does anyone else remember the "Miss Bardahl" hydroplane? Didn't they haul it around to different gas stations and show it from the back of a truck by lifting it on its side?
Yes they did and the lift trailer wasn't to show it off. It was too wide to haul, otherwise.
There are two more commercials to guess and they are the easiest ones. I think maybe our Cougars have tired of this game.
