Message: Reading Alex Morales message reminded me of the time I bought a black '40 Ford, two door sedan from somebody who lived at or near 119th and Prairie, west side. This sedan had an early Olds sporting six Stromberg 97's. That was my second '40. I can't remember what happened to that one but soon I bought another one with a built up Flat-head in it that quickly threw a rod. I traded the bad engine with the high powered cam, heads and carburation etc. for an 8mm movie camera. I put a big Olds (for the time) in it until I blew out the '39 Ford box. I wanted to put a D&F Hydro in it but cost was too high for me so I decided to sell the '40 for $300 to Robin Petty, and went out and bought a white '57 Olds like the one Alan Hauge had at the time. I finally decided to sell it too, and so this guy takes it for a test drive and never returns. That's when I decided to join the Navy in the Spring of '63.
So you traded the 57 Olds for a boat? That 57 Oldsmobile was my all time favorite Olds. Loved those rear corner windows.

Message: From the Daily Breeze: Great News! Hawthorne High to become first South Bay high school to offer prestigious program By Rob Kuznia Staff Writer
Hawthorne High is set to become the first high school in the South Bay or Harbor Area to offer a prestigious curriculum called International Baccalaureate, an accelerated program that rivals Advanced Placement and whose most successful graduates can enter college as sophomores. The intensive program is known for its global bent, as well as its focus on writing and critical thinking over multiple-choice testing. That its introduction to the South Bay will occur in a school serving one of the area's most economically disadvantaged populations rather than one of the many affluent and high-performing schools is in itself remarkable -- and, some would say, a coup for Hawthorne High.
Yes indeed, thanks Leo.

Message: Hello every one. Although I went to Leuzinger I first attended Hawthorne, but was kicked out after being jumped by Lennox gang members at HHS in 1997. I grew up on 119th St and Prairie and have many great memories of the Great city of Hawthorne. Don's Market, Amato's Pizza on Prairie, Toys and Hobbies on Prairie. The old airplane junk yard between 119th st and 119th pl. An old man who looked like popeye who rode a bike with a bunch of Pepsi sodas in his basket. Crazy Mary who would go around yelling at every one and drawing upside down crosses everywhere. Most of all I remember The Great Jack The Ice Cream Man. He never changed his prices no matter how expensive other ice cream trucks were. He gave free ice cream if you didn't have any money. He had a change holder on his belt and always had a fat stack of bills. What other trucks sold for a dollar he sold for about 35 cents. When I visit my old street in Hawthorne I see a shrine for the Beach Boys, but there should really be a shrine for the Great Jack The ice Cream Man because he really made a difference in the lives for us kids in Hawthorne. I'm 42 years old now and I miss you Jack.
Hi Alex, Great memories of good old Hawthorne. I remember the Egg Man. He sold eggs from his 3 wheeled bicycle. Also the blind broom salesman who went door to door selling brushes and corn brooms. You had Great Jack and I had the Good Humor Man. The memories are there, no matter what decade you came from. Thanks for yours.

Message: Jill, Yes - happened to me also, but aparently I was mugged and robbed while at Heathrow in London. I actually interrupted an individual after a login who was IM'g all my Facebook contacts asking for money - hence, I don't use that account anymore. I hope that Connie knows that her account is compromised. *Konnie Krislock, apparently, she is stranded in the Phillipines and is asking for money. Does that sound like her? Message: Bill Snyder ...You da man!! Any gathering that pulls that many Cougars together is a good thing. Congrats on your new celebrity too, you're bound to bump into more Cougars in the course of your travels! The difference between a true Cougar sighting and a planned gathering is like the difference between catching a fish in the open ocean or catching one at a sporting goods show at the Long Beach arena in a plastic trout pond stocked with fish. My brother had a birthday party a few months ago and lo and behold I saw about a dozen Cougars there but it was calculable that some would be there so I didn't even mention it because Kahuna John would pull out his magic wand and DQ them. Keep up your efforts to have sighting though, About 800 more and you'll be in competition with me! Looking forward to reading your new book.. congrats!
Now Clark... play nice

and on and on....

Message: Okay Mr. Millman, I'm about to give you a run for your Cougar sighting money. I was in town for a book signing at THE BOOK FROG in Rolling Hills last week. The store is owned by Pete Ledesma (HHS78). Please excuse me if I'm a little off on the graduation years. I sighted the following Cougars and almost Cougars: Danny Martinez (HHS 78), Lori Sloan Martinez (Lawndale 78), Lori Martinez Ashby (HHS 79), Tracy Turner (HHS 78) Kathy Turner (Lawndale 77), Bryan Nygaard (HHS 77) Laura Nygaard (Lawndale 77), Margie Galindo Lopez (HHS 78), Lucia Galindo Koz (St Joe's/HHS ?),Luz Uribe (HHS 78), Marla Manriguez (HHS 79), Michelle Stich Woods (HHS 78), Laura Twitchell Anderson (HHS 78), Gypsi Luck (HHS 79), Kurt Morlock (HHS 77),Linda Frink (HHS 77), Debbie Frink (HHS 76),Carrie White Silva (HHS 79), Scott Acevedo (HHS 79), and Jeff Acevedo (HHS 80). Gypsi Luck brought her Hawthorne Intermediate teacher Mr. Dana. Pat Rodriguez (HHS 79) has in Europe, but he sent his son Adam. Does that count, Clark? Finally, I had breakfast with Bryce Nygaard (HHS 77). How do you like them Cougar sighting apples Clark Millman? Lastly, I have a Beach Boys question and I know you can answer this, John. Did the Wilson brothers grow up on Kornblum?
The Beach Boys grew up at 3701 W. 117th St. Yes, on the corner of 117th and Kornblum. GREAT SIGHTINGS BILL!! Clark, you have met your Cougar Sighting match. Thanks Bill and I know I've said this before but, Mr Dana was my 8th grade teacher at Intermediate in 1957-58. It was his very first year there and he was by far my favorite grade school teacher of all time. Thanks for the Cougar Sightings man. Most of who you named are now Cougartowners.

Message: Was driving south on the 405, I think around Carson, and noticed the Goodyear blimp on the left and the big golfer guy on the right, but surrounded by dirt. What the heck happened to the golf course? Are more homes going up in its place? Come to think of it, what were the cross streets of Ascot Park and when was that torn down?
The big golfer was Dominguez golf course and has been replaced by a car company, I think Porsche. Maybe a test track?
Ascot was on the east side of Vermont between 190th and 182nd St.

Message: I'm always amazed at how and where Clark finds the not so hidden Cougars amongst us. Way to go! Speaking of Coach Sid. Wasn't he an NFL ref too? I remember one of the HHS coaches in the 70s was also working NFL games on Sundays.
Yes Coach Sid was a line judge in the NFL for many years.

Message: A double Cougar sighting! Two different locations about thirty minutes apart. During my lunchtime today I went to Home Depot in Torrance to get another can of paint for the Halcap sign. The flat white I used for the background wasn't to my satisfaction so I wanted some gloss white so the name Halcap will be highly visible to the visiting spectators. The young man helping me with the paint was Joe Via (HHS'95). How appropriate, a young Cougar helping an older Cougar with the Halcap sign! Then on the way back to my office I stopped at Macys to get some pants that were on sale. When I got to the men's dept. a guy was rifling through the pants looking for his size. From the side I wasn't sure if I recognized him so I called out his name..."Sid?!". He wheeled around and sure enough it was Sid Semon. Sid coached golf and I think baseball during my days at HHS. I hadn't seen Sid in years so we had a nice chat and went on our way. Like moths to a flame, the "Cougar Stalker" keeps reeling them in!
Man, I guess. You are a truly amazing guy Clark, no matter what Sloey says.
