Message: I saw the name Roger Peters on the birthday list for this day. Any classmates know who he is. Not in any yearbooks either and his e- mail is no good. Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful ladies of Cougartown.
Some people on the Alumni List didn't graduate from HHS. Lots of kids went to HHS for a couple of years then moved away. Happy Mothers Day to all our Cougar Moms.

Message: I had a pretty good idea but I had to look up "Sound Hog" and the answer is nope I'm not. I remember the tune being sung but it might not have been on the radio. I think my uncle would sing it. Wasn't it from the mid 50's? He was always singing Great Balls of Fire too.
The song has been done by numerous artists over the years. I do think this version was from the late 50s.

Message: John, I was just reading Robin Hood's post mentioning Steve Feinberg. I was down to Danny Kieffer's house last year and so we called the other guys to come over, i.e., Alan Hauge, Gene Gutierrez, Dick Doughty, who brought Steve Feinberg along, who I haven't seen since the mid sixties. He's pretty much the same. Still pin-striping and has a million stories about the cars of the day.
Thanks Jim, he's a weird puppy as most painters are.

Message: Hodads didn't wear Pendletons, they wore Sir Guy shirts, as I recall. Never tucked in, and always buttoned to the top. And while the surfers had "Bushy, Bushy, Blond Hairdos", the hodads had jelly rolls.
Now THAT'S a Hodad.

Message: Marilyn, whoever created that crossword was never in the South Bay in the 50s and 60s. Hodads didnt want to surf and for good reason. If you spent the time it took to apply enough Pomade to lube a school bus, then comb it to the last folical, you would never want to jump in the ocean and mess it up. They had style. We wore Converse low cuts, they wore black, highly polished Tom McCans. We liked shorts or high water 501s. They liked creased Khakis that came so close to touching the sidewalk you never saw the heel of their shoes. Shirts were a lot the same. White Penneys towncraft in the summer and Pendeltons in the winter. But the surfers left the top button open, and that never happened with a full tilt boogie Hodad. We liked cars that could make it to the beach with a few boards. They liked 53' Chebbys (and others) that were as low to the street as their Khakis were to the sidewalk. Our girls wore little make up and hair to their waist. Their girls had BIG hair. They were also very limber as they could button a sweater on backwards. Good looking girls but thats all we knew as, hitting on one of theirs and you would be beaten like a rented mule. We danced to Dick Dale (lets go trippin) at the Rendevous in Balboa. They went to El Monte legion stadium to the Teen Queens (Eddie my love). The best part of it all was at Fosters (133rd) back then we all got along and even had another group..."The racers" but thats for another chapter...
I wasn't a surfer or a hodad. Put me in that other group.

Message: In the mid-sixties when I was at HHS I saw many definitions of hodads. Some said they were people who pretended to be surfers and actually might drive around with surfboards bolted to their car so they would not be stolen. I leaned more to the greaser/low rider definition myself. But in reality we need not look any further than the world recognized source for all things to do with the 1960's, Cougartown. The Cougartown 60's Slang page says, and I agree, "Hodad... A non-surfer, usually someone who just hangs around the beach." So that would break down the whole world to three type of people, at least in a surfers perspective. Surfers, gremmies, and everyone else (Hodads).
Then there were Soshes (sic)

Message: I recently was telling my wife that in Jr High a guy kept asking if I was a surfer or a hodad, and he was never satisfied with the answer that I was a hot rodder. I tried to explain to my wife what a hodad is (was?) and didn't have a very good description. Anyone have a good description of a hodad?
I think of a Hodad as someone who drives a low rider for some reason.

Message: Glad to see the music game back. I remember KRTH doing this in the 70s. We copied it at a radio station I worked at in the late 70s. So it's fun for me to see it hear (not mispelled). Its not easy to get some songs from just a snippet but here goes: Always and Forever - Heatwave, Its Magic- Pilot Sukiyaki- Kyu Sakamoto, (tragically killed in the JPL crash of 83) Denise Denise- Randy and the Rainbows
Thanks Cliff, you too ran the table. I will have to make these a little tougher See you tomorrow.

Message: That is so funny Clark. We got a call last night from one of our friends who said she was in Target when she heard a loud noise coming from the front of the store like a cheer leader. It got louder and she could finally make out the words, "I'm from Hawthorne and I couldn't be prouder, if you can't hear me I'll yell a little louder." AND HE GOT LOUDER AND LOUDER! Finally the kid from the cash register came running over saying, "I'm from Hawthorne too." This seemed to calm the man down considerably. He grabbed a greeting card and the two headed back to the register. On her way out she was paying for her stuff and asked the cashier if that man was his friend. "Oh no! He comes in here about two times a month, starts chanting some football cheer the minute he enters the building that always has Hawthorne as its focus. We've all been told that we are to run not walk to wherever he is and proclaim we are from Hawthorne and give him a date we graduated. Calms him down immediately. But this time was a little different, this time he said, Take that Sloey!" Seems the kid was still attending Mira Costa. Coincidence? I think not. Off with Cougar sighting!
Well, Mira Costa is close to Hawthorne. You go Clark, I've seen you in that cheerleader skirt and BIG "H" sweater... you look fabulous.
