Message: Cougar sighting! I was buying my mom a mothers day card at Target and Chris Cruz(HHS'10) was running the register. He said Mark Newell is doing a good job and he said he doesn't like the campus remodel. He told me he likes "Old Hawthorne" better! Another guy born a generation late. My last sighting was a '72 so I was due for a young one!
Thanks Clark, another great sighting.

Message: I recall looking at Lee's 58 sedan delivery in 1971. Gotta be the same car-- it was sitting in a back yard across the street from Lee's house. Was with my bro Marty and his buddy Bob Cook who lived nearby. Word was that it was for sale for $400. I wanted it but of course I had no money. It was all there pretty much-just kinda faded and dirty. Marty said it was a fast one back in the day. But too much of a beast- not good for a daily driver. Bro was probably right! Ended up with a 65 Comet 2dr 6cyl 3-on the tree. Was still fun to have a good car to get around in. Much better mpg than a 409! Best Wishes to all, Bob C.
And the story of the Weber-Weathers-Leonard-Hale Beast continues..... Thanks Bob.

Message: I owned a '58 Chevy panel wagon for a short time soon after I graduated in 1966. Long ago I shared on Feedback this. There wasn't too many of those delivery sedans around. It was not one of my favorite cars. I bought it with dreams of surfing safaris, drive-in movies and cruising the Boulevard. Unfortunately it lasted about one week before it started blowing the oil hose. I was driving down the street with some friends and it completely lost power. It looked like a Texas gusher had erupted under the hood. Just a bad oil hose I thought and replaced it and all the lost oil. After the second time it did that I thought I'd outsmart it by going to Scat Enterprises in Inglewood and buying a metal hose. I'm still not sure what it did but I know it destroyed the six cylinder that was in it but the hose was as good as new. Well heck, I wanted an 8 anyway so I then went to Colorado Wrecking Yard to buy a 283. The man took me in the back and started one up. With no muffler it sounded terrific to my teenage ear. Fit right in he sez. No problem at all he sez. Well it was a '57 engine and in '58 they changed the engine mounts. Back to Scat for a conversion kit. I fussed with it for a while but as you know, never got it done. I've been kind of partial to Ford's ever since. I did spot it in a Lennox backyard a few years later. Still no engine. Because of Cougartown I heard the "rest of the story" of what happened after I sold it still not running in 1967. On March 2, 2001 Blake Withell of the class of '67 shared on Cougartown, "Are you the same Jerry Miles I bought a white 58 Chevy Delray sedan delivery from in 67? I never put an engine in it either. I did some body work then my dad kicked it and me out of the garage." Maybe it is still sitting out there to this day, under a tree, waiting for the right shade tree mechanic to make it roar again.
Then again it's probably a Honda by now. Hey folks, I forgot to mention that Jerry has just finished another one of his nostalgic videos. It's called "Hey, Wasn't This Hawthorne?" Go to Happenings on the Navigation Bar, click on Jerrys Videos. You'll find it there. Thanks again Jerry for all you do to keep our past alive. Thanks for the 58 Chevy story too.
My main HHS ride was a 58 Chevy Biscayne WITH an engine

Message: Hey JB and Gary. Yes that is the same 59 Panel truck Webber and Weathers had but it never looked better than when Lee Leonard bought it and had it painted black. After a ton of gold leaf lettering by Steve Feinberg it was morphed into "The Mind Blower". It was truly a bad a$$ 4spd, dual quad posi-traction 409 like the song. Many moons ago I ran into Dewey in a Hermosa pub shooting darts. He was unfortunately in his last summer but I showed him a pic in my wallet of his old wheels and he could not have been happier, for that night anyway. JB the next time you see Lee, ask what was written around the passenger door jam of that truck. It is not for public consumption but Feinberg had one sense of humor. And Sloey: I think that was Standard Oil that sent the no Pope yet signal..Later Skaters
Hey Robin, You and Gary keep saying 59, it's a 58. I just talked to Lee and he is sending me a picture of the car after he had it painted. Lots of local history with this 58 Del Ray, for sure.

Message: Happy Birthday to Ernie Nixon. We miss seeing you and hope you are doing well. We, too, had a super time at the Cinco de Mayo party Sunday. You Cougs don't know what you are missing. Tons of fantastic food, drink and entertainment for a minimum price. Plus the chance to hang out with good friends and help the Vets. Thank you Judy and Jan for all you do there. John, you are giving the Frito Bandito a run for his money. Gee, can I say that and still be PC...? Aww, who cares!
Yeah who cares, we had a great time huh. Happy Birthday Ernie!!! We miss you out here MAAAANN.

Message: Gosh John, I hope that is not the same truck. When we saw it; it was lowered in the front and had chrome wheels. The bright red paint was set off by a huge Dewey Weber on the side. The lettering was much like the stickers on his boards. We were so lucky to have guys like that drop in at the home of the Cougars; 26th street in Manhattan

Message: South Bay Mag has a cover story and pictures of Dewey Weber. Dewey had several memorable visits to 26th street MB, home of the Cougars. I say memorable because he was by himself and we had Lynn Accord, Paul and Avery Knapp and Crazy Craig. We had more guys but he was just as nuts as our best. Surfed his ass off then spent two hours just talking with us. I think he sold some boards and his '58 Chevy panel truck to Mike Weathers that day. I still have a "performer" in my garage and it is not for sale. Great story of a local guy.
Gary, wasn't this Mike Weathers' panel at one time?

Message: RE: SUNDAY AND THE CINCO DE MAYO PARTY FIESTA/DINNER AT THE HAWTHORNE VFW. (see the banner on the right side of CT). Sharon, so far we have about 98 people committed to being there, but not to worry, as you well know that the tank and canteen can hold that and more. Besides, not everyone will be there at 2:00, some will come later. (sort of like In and Out Burger without the line to the street). Jan told me to mention the Live Band and Mexican Cuisine. Suzie in the canteen makes great Margaritas and beer will flow like...... well like beer. See you there. Again, tickets can be purchased at the door on Sunday.
