Message: Hey Al Murphy, How about sharing some stories about Hawthorne from your perspective? Tell us some of your most interesting times in Hawthorne.
Yeah Murph, let's hear a Fred Moore or John Delberto story. I heard this second hand from Bob Reagan HHS62 (Blue 62 Chevy 409). One night Bob was in A&W, (like we all were) and had a front row seat for the following. Fred was yukking it up, laughing and talking to a girl sitting in her car (like he always was) when some guy pulled through in a MG and stopped right where Fred was talking to this girl. Fred came over and told the guy to move the car or he was going to bust him for something. Fred was a pretty big guy but this guy opened his door and started "uncoiling himself" out of his MG.....well he was about 6' 9" and was yelling down the throat of poor old Fred. He was pretty %&*$# ticked off that Fred was smooth talking his girlfriend and told him if he ever caught him talking to her again he was going to kick his ass. He got back in his MG and left. Fred was speechless.

Message: Thanks Armand for the props for my Stanford Cardinal. I dont expect the USC suppporters to acknowledge how big a victory in the Rose Bowl is, but it has been 40 years since the last one in 1972 when Jim Plunkett led a victory over the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes which I was luck enough to have attended as well. So at this rate I will be about 100 years old when the next Stanford Rose Bowl victory happens and unless modern medicine provides a miracle for me, I may not make the next one. Good luck to the Duck fans tonight against Kansas State. You can hope Alabama and Notre Dame draw a 0-0 tie, followed by a BCS split vote enabling you to sneak in the back door for the BCS #1 spot. Happy New Year to All and may you fly or surf over the fiscal cliff!
I'm a Fight On USC supporter and was pulling for Stanford all the way. I am going to go out on a limb here and state that it will not be another 40 years until Stanford is back in the Rose Bowl. The way they are playing now it might be next year. Congrats Dean on a tremendous year for the Palo Alto team and good luck to the Ducks tonight. Trojan fan yes, Pac 12 fan, YES!!

Message: Thank you, Jerry, for answering that question. My dad ran in Masters Track Meets in that stadium, and my son ran in a high school meet there in 2000 for Simi Valley High School. For you Class of 69ers, remember our foreign exchange student Wilfried von Ammon? Janet Amuchastegui(68) and I will be visiting him this Sept in Austria. He's doing well, having retired a year ago, altho he's still a consultant in his field of crystal technology.
Hi Ken, While you're there, tell Wilfried to get connected right here.

Message: The Hawthorne - Santa Barbara 1964 football season (c/o '65) first round CIF playoff game was played in Santa Barbara. At almost 50 years ago and I do not remember it being played at Santa Barbara High School, but rather at possibly UC Santa Barbara under the lights. I do remember a very long bus ride home (No joy in Cougarville). It was the Ol' Coach's return as head coach, with a great team in the HHS Cougar tradition, Wayne Bryan / Dave Chauncey at QB, Jim Hess, Jim Sloey, Henry Cooper, etal. (my apologies to the rest of the team, who's names have slipped from my memory). Jim Sloey, if you are out there, help me Rhonda. From recent posts, it seems you might be either one step from the law [Ha!], or off visiting the grandchildren, in which case, you'll return to CT reality in 2014). Anyone else want to jump in here, please?
Thanks Glenn, I knew you or Jerry would know something.

Message: I am writing tonite with a sad report for the Class of 74. I recieved an email reporting that our classmate, Randy Leonard, died last night. He had apparently been battling an illness for some time and has lost that battle. His passing comes on the heels of another 74er, John Fenton who we lost recently. John and Randy were good friends who shared a love of horsemanship in recent years. Sincerest condolences to all of their dearest family and friends and I'm thinking that the best way to honor the passing of any of our fellow Cougars is to heed the lesson that life is surely all too short. Make your connections now and stay in touch. BTW, love you John. Thanks for all the magic all these years. XOXO
Hi Sue, sad news for your class, for sure. Our condolences to their families and friends. Love you too girl.

Message: I haven't been on CT in quite a while...until today. I've enjoyed the last four hours reading postings from different years past, and I miss HHS alumni and reminiscing the good ole days. Happy New Year to all of you from my partner, Janet Amuchastegui (class of 68), and me. It was sure sad to read about some of the passings - Gary The Myk, Henry Cooper, Coach Gore to name just some I remember so well. Janet and I will send in our overdue dues, and hope for a visit to Hawthorne one of these days.
Hi Ken, Glad you and Janet are getting caught up and thanks very much for the Ctown dues.

Message: In the 1964 football season, the Cougars lost only one game and played Santa Barbara in the first game of the CIF playoffs. It ended in a scoreless tie, and Santa Barbara advanced because they had more 1st downs. Question: Where was that game played? A friend says it was at the Rose Bowl, but I doubt that since 1st-round playoffs were at one of the two playing schools, not at a neutral site far from either school. I think she's mixing it up with the 1966 game against Pasadena at the Rose Bowl, but she doesn't think she's wrong.
Who knows this answer?

Message: I had a unique Cougar sighting. I was playing golf with the Daquila clan at Strawberry farms in OC. In the middle of the course there is a 5 acre lake surrounded by marshlands. We were on the 16th tee box and above the area. Moving across the marsh was a 100 LB Cougar. When we took an interest he/she stopped and looked us over. I think the ducks and frogs were an easier dinner. My first Cougar sighting.
Now that's a REAL Cougar sighting, for sure. Thanks Gary.

Message: Dennis Reed, who would have graduated with the HHS c/o '64, had his family not moved to Yorba Linda at the the end of his sophomore year in 1962, forwarded me a link to a recently published article about the house in which he lives. Dennis retired as the the Dean of Arts for L. A. Valley College last fall. I was forunate to have been invited to his retirement celebration. JB, had it not been for Cougartown, I would not have reconnected with Dennis, and for that I thank you. At this New Year, I count my blessings, among which is Cougartown. Thank you John
Well thank you Glenn, There have been countless reconnections over the years, through Ctown and for that I know lots of Cougars are thankful. It's what we do here Hope many more reconnect in the coming year.
