Message: Thanks Armand for the props for my Stanford Cardinal. I dont expect the USC suppporters to acknowledge how big a victory in the Rose Bowl is, but it has been 40 years since the last one in 1972 when Jim Plunkett led a victory over the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes which I was luck enough to have attended as well. So at this rate I will be about 100 years old when the next Stanford Rose Bowl victory happens and unless modern medicine provides a miracle for me, I may not make the next one. Good luck to the Duck fans tonight against Kansas State. You can hope Alabama and Notre Dame draw a 0-0 tie, followed by a BCS split vote enabling you to sneak in the back door for the BCS #1 spot. Happy New Year to All and may you fly or surf over the fiscal cliff!

Message: Thank you, Jerry, for answering that question. My dad ran in Masters Track Meets in that stadium, and my son ran in a high school meet there in 2000 for Simi Valley High School. For you Class of 69ers, remember our foreign exchange student Wilfried von Ammon? Janet Amuchastegui(68) and I will be visiting him this Sept in Austria. He's doing well, having retired a year ago, altho he's still a consultant in his field of crystal technology.

Message: The Hawthorne - Santa Barbara 1964 football season (c/o '65) first round CIF playoff game was played in Santa Barbara. At almost 50 years ago and I do not remember it being played at Santa Barbara High School, but rather at possibly UC Santa Barbara under the lights. I do remember a very long bus ride home (No joy in Cougarville). It was the Ol' Coach's return as head coach, with a great team in the HHS Cougar tradition, Wayne Bryan / Dave Chauncey at QB, Jim Hess, Jim Sloey, Henry Cooper, etal. (my apologies to the rest of the team, who's names have slipped from my memory). Jim Sloey, if you are out there, help me Rhonda. From recent posts, it seems you might be either one step from the law [Ha!], or off visiting the grandchildren, in which case, you'll return to CT reality in 2014). Anyone else want to jump in here, please?

Message: I am writing tonite with a sad report for the Class of 74. I recieved an email reporting that our classmate, Randy Leonard, died last night. He had apparently been battling an illness for some time and has lost that battle. His passing comes on the heels of another 74er, John Fenton who we lost recently. John and Randy were good friends who shared a love of horsemanship in recent years. Sincerest condolences to all of their dearest family and friends and I'm thinking that the best way to honor the passing of any of our fellow Cougars is to heed the lesson that life is surely all too short. Make your connections now and stay in touch. BTW, love you John. Thanks for all the magic all these years. XOXO

Message: I haven't been on CT in quite a while...until today. I've enjoyed the last four hours reading postings from different years past, and I miss HHS alumni and reminiscing the good ole days. Happy New Year to all of you from my partner, Janet Amuchastegui (class of 68), and me. It was sure sad to read about some of the passings - Gary The Myk, Henry Cooper, Coach Gore to name just some I remember so well. Janet and I will send in our overdue dues, and hope for a visit to Hawthorne one of these days.

Message: In the 1964 football season, the Cougars lost only one game and played Santa Barbara in the first game of the CIF playoffs. It ended in a scoreless tie, and Santa Barbara advanced because they had more 1st downs. Question: Where was that game played? A friend says it was at the Rose Bowl, but I doubt that since 1st-round playoffs were at one of the two playing schools, not at a neutral site far from either school. I think she's mixing it up with the 1966 game against Pasadena at the Rose Bowl, but she doesn't think she's wrong.

Message: I had a unique Cougar sighting. I was playing golf with the Daquila clan at Strawberry farms in OC. In the middle of the course there is a 5 acre lake surrounded by marshlands. We were on the 16th tee box and above the area. Moving across the marsh was a 100 LB Cougar. When we took an interest he/she stopped and looked us over. I think the ducks and frogs were an easier dinner. My first Cougar sighting.

He is doing fine and preparing to escape the cold winter Bishop weather with a cruise soon. And a little belated but in the same conversation a discovered my niece had Jim Hess HHS 65 and also from Bishop as her driving instructor a few months ago.
