Message: John, Mr. Kyllonan; I think taught Natural Science to us when we were Jr. I think he was part of the famous Corliss Moylan line. He was teaching mutations and was showing the class a chicken with four legs; two regular and two small legs right behind. He asked Corliss what was wrong with the bird and she answered it's back legs were too short. Corliss would never admit she said it until about 5 years ago and finally she admitted it. It would not have been so funny except I think Corliss was one of the top three students in our graduation class and went on to become a rocket scientist at Aerospace corp.
Good story Gary, Thanks

Bob Kyllonen is his name there Sharon. Glad you've returned to us.

Message: Ken-boy, would I love to see some of those Cougar newspapers from those years. Think of everything going on during the late 60's! Vietnam, Civil Rights, and the music! We had a wonderful teacher and put out some awesome papers. I remember how hard she fought for us so the Administration would not censor our writings. These were my happiest memories at HHS. Betty

Message: I've enjoyed reminiscing with old Cougar newspapers lately, from 66 to 69. My parents, it turned out, saved a lot of them (and everything else imaginable) and we found them when they died and we had to sell the house (on 123rd Place). Only now, 5 yrs later, am I rummaging through things we found, altho sister Janet has most of the stuff (btw, her birthday was yesterday). I also came across a Top 10 list for HHS Track and Field, dated 1970. JB, from the class of 62 there were Jim Reale, Steve Smith, Mike Kelly, John Mitchell, Gary Bickers (School Record 22-3 in Long Jump), Day Dye (school record in Shot Put), and Ernie Franzen.
Thanks Ken and Happy Birthday Janet. Yes those were all great athletes from the early 60s alright. I know I've said it before but Dan Dye's shotput record (61'10.5") still stands as the longest running sports record in HHS history. Not sure they even make shotputters like Dan anymore

Message: Carl, thanks for the info on Huell in Hawthorne. I just watched it and it's not his most exciting segment, but it's classic Huell being amazed at how the worker dipped the cone into the chocolate without the vanilla ice cream falling from the cone. It would have made a better story if he had shot this show during a Cougar Cruise Night. All California flags should fly half-staff for Howser this weekend. I heard on KFI 640 this morning Howser's going to be cremated and he had given to his sister and her husband a list of his 20 favorite California places for them to spread a little bit of him. He had given them instructions and $$ to stay at the finest hotels and eat at the finest restaurants as they give Huell one last trip throughout the state. My only question is where will they stay and eat in Hawthorne? :) Any guesses? :)

Message: As many of you know, I am a NCAA football fan. This has been a strange season, but enjoyable. For those of you who are sick of the BCS system, the proposed playoffs is something I have suggested and even written letters about. If they can have March Madness, what is so hard about doing it in football? I know ... it is all about money. Too many schools are jumping conferences. Too many players are not completing their educations and going pro. For me, the final straw has been too many SEC national championships, particularly the past three. Raised on the USC Trojans, but converted to the Arkansas Razorbacks (unless playing USC), I am sick of Nick Saban and his attitude. I never thought I would see the game where I would actually root for Notre Dame. But, I did. To the bitter end. So, JB. I will get off my soap box and catch up on NCAA basketball and get ready for the Final Four ... but, I still say "we" have got to Fight On!!!

Message: I, too, have been a big Huell Howser fan for many years and will miss him and his documentaries of California. He did, indeed, do a feature that should be of interest to Cougartowners. Back in July of 2011 he visited the famous Fosters Freeze at 11969 Hawthorne Boulevard for a new series he was starting called California Restaurants. In that program he interviewed customers, and the CEO who talked about Fosters' history. It was a windy day on Hawthorne Blvd and Fosters looked very good as Huell did his usual good job of describing the place. If you google "Huell Howser Fosters" you will see several links which will allow you to view much of the program. Another fine example of California's Gold!!!
Thanks Carl, I remember that now.

Message: Hey Murph, back in the day a couple of Hawthorne's finest pulled me over. Just wondering if one them was you? This was one of my favorite Hawthorne stories. Below is a excerpt from an early Feedback. "Back in '60 Wayne Brasheres and I talked someone into buying us a half pint of Bacardi dark rum from a liquor store down in Lawndale. We were heading North on Hawthorne when the Hawthorne Heat pulled us over, made us get out and spread-eagle, went through that car with a fine tooth comb. I mean they pulled my back seat out, took my spare tire out, checked everything but found nothing. They put the car back together, brushed us off and apologized for getting us mixed up with some other blue '51 Chevy. After we were well on our way we opened the glove compartment and saw the Rum still there untouched. We threw it out at the nearest trash can. I got religion that night!"

Message: I was also so saddened to hear about Huell Howser, my favorite personality on PBS. Have visited many places in Calif after I had seen shows he had aired about them. He took such joy in the simple things much as we did in the past. He had been up in this Yosemite/mountain area many times to visit Mariposa. In fact, they just did a newspaper article on him and his many visits. He was all over this state and I have to believe he found parts of Hawthorne that he may have done a show on as well. RIP Huell, and "give us a wave" from up there.
PBS could do their own series on Huell.

Message: Sad news with the passing of "California's Gold" Huell Howser. Does anyone know if he did any memorable episodes in Hawthorne or the South Bay? Huell gave Chapman University his entire collection. I've always enjoyed his show and have planned several day trips to include spots he visited. For those of you who like this type of stuff, I recommend getting the book "Secret Stairs" a walking guide to the historic staircases of LA. It's got really cool walks through forgotten staircases that were built in the 1920's-1940's to connect neighborhoods to trolley lines. You get to see unique homes and it's filled with local trivia. Last Sunday, a group of us (including 6 HHS alums) hiked to a secret abandoned Nazi camp in Pacific Palisades, which included the longest known staircase in LA, 512 steps.
Thanks Tom, Huell Howser will be missed. Just an all around "nice guy" and a walking encyclopedia on California, out of the way, side trips.

Message: JOHN, YOU ASKED ABOUT FRED MOORE & JOHN DELBERTO! AS WE ALL KNOW, MOORE THOUGHT HE WAS THE BEST THING THAT EVER WENT DOWN HAWTHORNE BLVD. LOL!!!! HE THOUGHT HE WAS A FAST DRAW ARTIST, UNTIL HE SHOT HIMSELF IN THS FOOT TRYING TO PROVE IT! LOL HAVE A FEW MORE STORIES ABOUT HIM & WILL SEND LATER IF YOU WANT LOL. DELBERTO WAS ONE OF THE TRAINING OFFICERS I HAD WHEN I FIRST JOINED THE DEPT. HE TAUGHT ME ALOT OF GREAT PATROL TECH'S. HE WAS NOT MUCH OF A PERSONALTY THOUGH. Message: O.K,When you're hot you're hot, I admit it! Another Cougar sighting today. on the way home from work I stopped at World Market to buy a birthday present and met Melinda Johnson(HHS '04). We chatted about all the construction at HHS and she said the whole time she was in school the cafeteria was being rebuilt. At this pace we should get alot of young people involved in Cougartown this year!
What can I say. He's hot folks.

Message: The "Cougar Stalker" is starting the year out quick with two sightings in the first four days of the year! On New Years Day while having breakfast at a restaurant in El Segundo I met(ambushed) Claudia Morales(HHS '98). We were both amazed that some of my teachers from the mid 70s were still at HHS in the mid 90s! Then yesterday while having lunch at El Pollo Inka Peruvian in Torrance I met Marvin Duenas (HHS '13')! This kid won't even graduate until June! From all the recent students I meet it seems principal Mark Newell is well liked and doing a good job. Nobody seems to care if the football team wins or loses! Well I've started out 2013 with a sighting every other day so if I can keep up the pace this will be quite a year for sightings! I liked the sighting of a real Cougar on a golf course, that is a special cougar sighting!
Keep them coming Clark and thanks for the sightings.

Message: Was asked to pass this one on. Barbara Omey, Class of 63 has passed away.
From her sister, below.
To friends of Barbara:
My dear sister Barbara passed away last weekend. Trying my best to notify people that had email addresses in her computer. This is a very sad time for our family, Barbara was such a trooper and inspiration to us. She passed away peacefully in her sleep and she is missed so much I can't express to you in words. I know she is finally at rest and in a better place, no more Doctors or treatments to deal with.
Joy Buerge (Omey)
Our sincere condolences to the Omey family in your hour of sorrow. Barbara had many friends up and down the classes. She will be sorely missed.
