Message: So sorry to read of Mrs. Bachman's passing but it did bring back some great memories. Sophmore year: my friend Diane Douglas and I had PE right after first lunch period. We thought Mrs. Bachman was clueless so we ditched over 25 days one quarter and went to lunch again with friends. It turned out WE were the clueless ones and we ended up spending our afternoons working in the locker room to make up for all the time missed. It was not "cool" for girls to like PE back then but I have to admit that I secretly enjoyed that hour a day that we had to put on those bleached white uniforms (laundered every weekend) and "play". Because of Kennedy's physical fitness program and state requirements that everyone had to have PE five days a week, we were exposed to trampoline, golf, archery, folk dancing, field hockey, badminton, track along with the standard, softball, basketball, volleyball and tennis. I wish that were true today. I would like to thank the ladies who I had over the four years at HHS: Mrs. Bachman, Ms. Likens, and Mrs. Duffy for the physical education they provided. One day in tennis my awkward backhand caught my partner, Marilyn Millspaugh, right in the mouth. Ms. Likens picked her up with blood spurting everywhere and ran all the way to the nurse's office. I ran into Ms. Likens when I was in my 30's and she remembered that story. So it is a very belated thank you to the ladies in the PE department at HHS. And Mrs. Bachman, it sounds like you had a wonderful life. God bless you.
Thanks Linda, I'm sure your story brings back some great memories to other Cougars of our PE days at HHS. Back then, we were pretty much all clueless.

Message: The "Cougar Stalker" is trying to finish the year strong! My brother Ray(HHS '71) and I have an annual tradition of attending at least one high school football playoff game. Last night we went to Veterans stadium in Long beach to see West Torrance play Palos Verdes for the CIF championship. When the game ended, we were leaving the stadium when who was walking toward me..Dennis Gonsalves (HHS 75) one of my favorite team-mates from the HHS '74 football team. We had a nice chat and I got caught up with his kids accomplishments. He has one in medical school, one who will be starting quarterback at Torrance high next year. It's nice to hear the next generation is doing well! For those of you out of the area who like football, Palos Verdes had a decisive victory over West Torrance for the CIF championship in their division, Narbonne won the L.A. city title last night against Crenshaw and North Torrance played for their division title but I don't know the results of that game yet!
Hey Clark, Thanks for the update and yet another Cougar Sighting. You ARE the man, man.

Message: John, I was just reading back in feedback, August 5, 2000 where Ray Shelley asked: "I remember spending time at the Gunga Den. Did Bill Haley and the Comets play there in "54, 55" or am I having a memory relapse?" No one answered him at that time so I'll ask the same question, anyone know? What other groups played there? What happened to all the people on this list?
Hi Jim, I really don't know if they played there or not. Maybe someone else knows.

Message: So there I was, in the lounge at work when I overheard a doctor saying something negative about UCLA. I butted in and said "Don't be sayin' nothin' bad about UCLA". He asked if had worked there at the hospital. I told him "No, but I'm from L.A." When I told him that I grew up in Hawthorne, he freaked and said that he grew up in Lawndale. He asked if I went to Hawthorne High and said he went to Leuzinger. He also said he used to work at the Hawthorne Savings and Loan. I told him that the father of a kid in my class (Doug Herbst '73) used to be the president of that bank. He told me that Doug became the president (this is starting to sound like "It's A Wonderful Life") and that he worked for Doug. Unfortunately, I got called away and never got his name. It's definitely a small world! Does this count as an "Olympian" sighting?
Hey Alan, Yes it does and it is definitely a small world. Thanks for sharing.

Message: Growing up in Hawthorne, I always assumed home ownership meant mowing your own lawn, performing maintenance on your car in the driveway, fixing your own plumbing problems, etc. My dad would take us all to the local auto and hardware stores and teach us how to fix things at home. As an adult when I got married and moved to South County in the OC, it was a time when all the home owners' associations were sprouting up and with it came all the regulations, like what color your house could be, how long your garage door could be open, when you could put your trashcan out on the curb, when you could work on your car, etc. I was the only guy on the street still mowing my own lawn and working on my car. One Friday after Thanksgiving, over 20 years ago, I was under my truck changing the oil and the neighborhood kids were gathering around watching this "unusual" event and asking questions. I remember one little girl asked, "Mr. Nadal, what are you doing?" my answer was straight forward, "I'm changing the oil, Susie." Her reply was "Into what?" This still cracks me up.
That would be a girl's response I guess Tom Thanks.

Message: Went shopping at midnight once when my boys were younger. Coming home I hit a deer and wiped out the grill and electrical on the front end of the car. Then when the Holiday conversations turned to who had gotten a deer that season my son chimed in that his mom got one. When someone asked what I used he replied with a straight face that I had used a 76 Ford LTD.
NOW THAT IS FUNNY Great story Sharon. Did you use a scope or just the hood ornament?

Message: Had a good look through the photo album but no bells were rung. Cool mystery, though. No midnight shopping for me, I have never tried it and likely never will. We had Thanksgiving dinner with friends, my job was to bring a ham and champagne which I did with amazing skill. Dinner was delish, and I dried a few dishes. It was the easiest Thanksgiving dinner I never cooked! LOL! I did miss our annual dinner with the Achrem/Valencia/Herlosky clan, though. Glo, we'll be in Meadview in about 8 years, can we make a reservation now?
Yeah they took those pictures when you were in about the 4th grade, Sharon. We need the early to mid 60s Cougars on this caper. Thanks for trying.

Message: I did graduate in 1963, but not from Hawthorne. I went to Leuzinger. We are holding our 50th Reunion next year, and we're trying to contact as many of our Missing classmates as possible. Also, we want to make that all of our classmates get all of the information they need regarding our reunion. So if you know anyone who graduated from Leuzinger in 1963, please give them my email address. They also can find out more about our reunion by going to lhsclass1963.wordpress.com
Thanks for your help. By the way, this is a great site, John.
Hi Don, I'm sure our Cougars have some Leuzinger friendships and do hope we can help out. I've got a Leuzinger friend, George Gates HHS62, who is coming for a visit this weekend so they are out there. Thanks for checking in Don and come on back anytime. Olympians are always welcome in Cougartown.

Message: Johnny Reissig, I just got back from Lake Isabella where we spent Thanksgiving with my dad, Bill Sutton. He was 91 years old this last October and still lives on his own. He remembers you well from his stage crew days and always comments on what a hard worker you were. If you email me, I will see that he gets it. He is not on the internet as he only has "dial up" as an option. He will be down here for the Christmas holidays. Janet Burkett, at the top of the Sutton, Trefz and Dill family list at Thanksgiving is being thankful that we still have my dad and his wisdom in our lives.
Thanks Linda, and do hope you get a shout from Johnny.
