Message: Friday night with fellow Cougars, last night Mike Burris (59), Rich Sloan(60)Dave Cato(60)Jim Crawford(60)and myself carpooled out to the midget races at Perris motor speedway, it was a good old time, reminded me of being at old Ascot.
See now, no need for big reunion plans, just grab a few Cougars and go do something. Got the message a little late from Rich or would have been there with you guys. Glad you had a fun night, Bob.

Message: I am so glad to hear the great reviews of the Beach Boy Concerts. I have been listening on XM Radio "60's on 6" to the Beach Boy Special this Memorial Weekend. I will be going to represent Hawthorne when they perform at the Greek Theater on the UC Berkeley Campus on June 1st. Hope to see some young, new fans, along with the old olds there. Aren't memories the greatest things and music is such a part of those happy times.
Yes indeed Kathy, looking forward to next Sunday as all I hear from others is what a fun concert it was.

Message: Watching SpaceX's Dragon on TV was great. Not only is SpaceX headquartered in Hawthorne, but some of the equipment is made and tested right down the road from me in McGregor, TX. We often hear the rockets being tested - they usually announce when there is testing planned after one time they didn't and there were a lot of the local folks calling emergency lines. I believe that "Scotty" from Star Trek's ashes were taken into space on the rocket that powered the Dragon Capsule.

Please remember all our veterans who have served and remember to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom. Hawthorne has heroes from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan who paid the price....twenty-six heroes died in Vietnam. Message: I had an opportunity to work the Beach Boys Concert tonight in Indio, "watch your step, please watch your step". They rocked the house! Excellent show, and I even choked up at a couple of the songs. Thank you for the memories! Hawthorne was a great town to grow up in.
Lisa, sounds like a fun event to work, especially being a Hawthorne girl. Going to the Verizon Center next weekend to see them with birthday boy, Bob Fraser, his wife Karen, Glenn Crist, and Rich and Mary Sloan. Can't wait...

Message: Dear whoever posted the message about the tree near HHS library. That memorial was set there after my love expired in Oct of 1983. He was 16 years old, and a really nice guy. How do I know? Because I was his lover off and on since 7th grade. During that time I think he had a step-father who had given birth to a baby two and a half years before he laid a shotgun to his chest. I think I remember his Folks had left with the baby for vacation getaway. LP

Message: Hey Bob Clobucker..Back in the day a group of us that worked at the A&W 'joined' the Street Racers and ordered our colors from Big Willie because we wanted to be cool. What posers we were! I think we rode out to Van Nuys Blvd in Bob Whaley's station wagon and stood in line to pick up our patches from Willie's wife. It didn't matter if you owned a hot car or not. Anyone could join if you had the twenty bucks. The patches had our nick names on them and also specified that we were from the 'Hawthorne Chapter'. Mrs. Whaley sewed the colors on our jackets for all of us, and we wore them proudly. Luckily we didn't get our asses kicked. The guy with the wheelie-popping Chevy step van was Randy Granath, class of '70. Fun memories!

Message: Got the news that Big Wille Robinson, the prez of the LA County Street Racers passed on at age 69. Ran my 72 Duster 340 at his Terminal Island track back in the late 70s. He was an interesting character to say the least. I remember a few guys at HHS that were members in the early 70s. Used to wear those crazy and cool jackets to school! Probably against the dress code these days. There was one guy the drove a hopped up step van that could pop wheelies. I think he was one of em. So raise your glass and toast to the memory of Big Wille. Long live the New Breed of Brotherhood! Best Wishes to all, BC 73.
Met Big Willie in 1961. We would take our racers down to a Fosters on about 67th and Central. In those days you usually didn't go to "that part of town", but Big Willie didn't care what color you were, he and his buddies always had fast street machines and just wanted to race something. RIP BW

Message: For all the friends of Marsha Russell, HHS64... Her mother, Lorene Russell passed away this afternoon after a long illness, she was 91. The Russell family, originally from Arkansas, were long time residents of Hawthorne dating back to the 1940s. Lorene was one of the sweetest, kindest people I've ever known and I will miss her big ol' smile and southern drawl. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be posted. Marsha, understandably, has asked that her friends please hold off calling her for a few days. I will miss you lots Lorene and will take good care of Lilly.
