Message: Beyond today being the day of a current Beach Boys concert, it is an important date in HHS sports history! It was exactly 50 years ago today, June 2 1962, that my friend Dan Dye was competing in the CA state track and field meet in Modesto California. On that day Dan threw the shotput 61 feet 10 and 1/2 inches to set the school record at HHS. An amazing accomplishment! Time has proven how good it was as no athlete since at HHS has even come close to Dans record. I recently met a current shot putter from HHS and told him about the record and he almost fell over in amazement because he cannot throw the shot within 20 feet of Dans record. If my memory serves me correctly, at the time Dan's effort was the 8th best throw in national prep records. An achievement all Cougars past and present can be proud of!
Indeed Clark and thanks for the reminder. Dan can still put the shot 50 feet at 68 years old. Happy Anniversary big Dan!!

Message: Susan - I remember wearing my squaw boots to school one day and it rained while I was in class. When I came out of class I could hardly stand up. But I wouldn't take them off because I didn't want to run my nylons. :) We used to carry clear nail polish in our purses to try to stop a run. Funny memories.

Message: Regarding the conversation on footwear...Desert Boots were a type of chukka boot that I believe were very popular among the boys and young men of the 60's. I think they were primarily of suede cowhide or calfskin and I believe they were lined. Laced through eyelets, with a rubber sole and heel. The ladies however, well - we had our squaw boots. One, maybe two silver buttons at the outside ankle and short, some may have had a horizontal fringe accent but this was an ankle- high boot. They had stitched toe seams which were sturdy and attractive,(well at least we thought they were) while a simple leather tie was all you needed to keep these boots on your feet. I had a white pair...polished them every week to keep them that way. They were like wearing slippers to school. Wish I had a pair now.

Message: No,Anita they werent called "squaw boots" Squaw boots were worn by girls only..they came in white or suede were very soft leather soles had stitching around the side of moccasian..a leather string tied the shoe on..it was wrapped around these two circle metal "button-like" fasteners located on the outer ankle area..I had some and remember that if the soles got wet, there was no friction at all, and I slipped and fell on my a...before I learned this! Wow! talk about having no life...can't believe I'm posting this! But it is a good memory though...were the boy shoes that you speak of called "desert" boots? I anxiously await for an answer! 69 rules!

Message: Hey, Patty girl, I remember those things (Shoes/Boots) as being called "Chukka Boots". They had a soft rubber wedgy type sole and came up to the ankle with I think 4 lace holes for the shoestrings and were made out of suede or some kind of soft material, not leather, as I remember. Jorge

Message: We'll be riding the Torrance Line to the Hollywood Bowl this Saturday and looking forward to a good Beach Boys concert sitting high in Section Q. Had a Cougar sighting on Sunday, Dave Steinhauer, I think class of '75 or '76. I hadn't seen or talked with him in maybe 15-20 years. I was pulling into my mom's driveway and saw a couple of Harley-Davidson's parked across the street and two bikers talking with Mrs. Steinhauer. Dave had just bought a new Harley on PCH and was showing it to his parents.
Thanks Tom

Message: Not a Cougar sighting but a Cougar contact. I received an email from a woman looking for Nick Hefner, I think HHS class of 1962. She found that I mentioned him on page 312 and asked if I knew how to contact him. I did a quick search on Ancestry.com and found what I guessed could be him in North Carolina. I sent her the last address I could find for him (2011). She did a lookup for a telephone number and gave him a call. I received an email from Nick thanking me for going out of my way and it turns out they were childhood friends! Nick said he doesn't remember much about his days in Hawthorne, I suggested Cougartown as a place to help recall those memories. Nick also mentioned that Allan Coffman (maybe HHS class of 1961) was the 1st manager for the Motley Crew and Allan took Nick to the Whiskey A go go to see them.
Hey Chris, Great Job hooking a couple of Cougars up. Thanks for going the extra mile.
