Message: Tom Buckingham-your story about Clara McGinty is very close to mine. She was my favorite teacher - a true liberal in her time. She encouraged me in my writing and though I never pursued a career in journalism, her guidance taught me truth and honor in journalism - which no longer exists in today's news world of journalism. I knew your sister Susie and your neighbors, the Bitneys.

Message: A big Happy Birthday shout out has to go to Bill Sloey (Coach Sloey). Bill did the honorable thing after winning a national championship at Nebraska by coming back to HHS to help guide the 74 Varsity team to the quarterfinals in C.I.F. Coach Sloey was a great coach and was not only appreciated by the defense but also by a lowly placekicker like me! Thanks again Coach Sloey!!!!! I was walking out of Home Depot an hour ago and as I exited who grabbed me, none other than another of my HHS sports heroes Dan Dye. So my three great sports heroes from HHS are Dan Dye, Bill Sloey, and Dribblin Danny Litton. God bless all three of you studs!

Message: Starting in 1965 after I began studying Journalism at El Camino. I got a part time job writing local news at the Hawthorne Advertiser Press newspaper. Bob Klein was the editor then and I worked with him afternoons preparing the twice weekly newspaper. He was a great boss and mentor for a young guy preparing for a career. Bob later became a high school teacher and taught English and Journalism at Leuzinger HS. My start in newspaper writing came in one of Ms Clara McGinty's Sophomore English class in 1962. She evidently saw some raw writing talent in me and recruited me to the COUGAR staff. I was a cub reporter as a junior and then edited the Feature page and wrote my own column. I count Ms McGinty as one of the main influences on my education, career and life. Even though I never worked for a major newspaper her guidance and support helped me on my way in the business world.

Message: Great story, Clark. Bob Klein was the reporter for the Hawthorne Advertiser Press when I was a kid working as a "Hell Boy" for the paper. The "Hell Boy" did the stuff nobody else wanted to do. I didn't know Bob well as he was out much of the time working on stories. But he seemed like a nice guy. Anyway, Clark, you should have been a gold miner; you have a way of finding the nuggets! Keep it up.

Message: Not a true Cougar sighting but a good story for a quiet Friday...A good friend of mine is having a birthday soon and I asked if there was anything special she would like. She said she'd like a new nightshirt from Disneyland like I gave her a few years ago. I had time today so I ventured out to Disneyland and got my friend her birthday present. When I got on the tram to go to my car and come home I started chatting with the young man next to me. In good Cougar stalker fashion I asked where he was from. He said he and his family lived in Whittier. He asked where I was from and I told him I grew up in Hawthorne and now lived in Manhattan Beach. He said his grandfather used to work in Hawthorne. I asked who his grandfather was and he said "Bob Klein". I said if Bob is your grandfather then you must be related to Faelin. His eyes got real big as if to say how do you know my family. He said "Faelin is my aunt!". I said " Your aunt was a cheerleader and graduated a year before me from Hawthorne High and your grandfather interviewed and hired me for a summer job with Hawthorne Parks and Rec. in 1977 just after my freshman year in college. He was amazed as I was at what a small world it really is and I added that "You may not apprecite the fact that your aunt was a smoking hot cheerleader!" (Did we have any other kind at Hawthorne back in the day?) His wife and three year old son were with him so I met a Cougars nephew and great nephew! Jason was a nice young man and it did not surprise knowing that Bob Klein is his grandfather!

Message: Huell Howser's visit to both Farmer Boys Restaurant and Fosters Freeze was rerun this morning on a cable channel. Since he never puts a date on anything if he can help it, I can only guess that he visited Hawthorne on a blustery afternoon last year. He interviewed two franchise operators, who told him that George Foster started the chain in October, 1946 in Inglewood, that it numbered 260+ locations in the 60's and that there are still 91 standalone restaurants while their superior ice cream is sold at 160 Pollo Loco locations. It is strictly a California operation. The chain was sold repeatedly and Mr. Foster disappeared at some point. As the camera was pointed to the southwest, I had to wonder whatever happened to the Thom McAn shoestores, one of which was on the corner near Fosters in the 60's. Some call him "Drool" Howser, and he tends to belabor some points, but those who work with him are amazed at his knowledge of the subject of each show, and it is a worthwhile program. A few years ago, Huell traced the origins of A&W to Lodi, north of Stockton. Who knew?

Message: Many thanks to all of you for the get well wishes for my shoulder, and the annaversary wishes for Barb and I. In the words of my old pal Gene Peppard the first time he met Barbara, "Man, you must have been good looking sometime in your life". I don't know about good looks, but I was lucky enough to have found her, and the kids we raised together and the four grand kids were all true blessings. Speaking of blessngs, the time I spent at HHS and the great friends I made there (and still get to see and shake hands with, and hug, and laugh about old times) I am a very lucky guy indeed! Thanks everybody and thanks to you John for the memories, they mean so much to so many of us! Hope to see you all soon;; Mike

Message: That was a good story on "Sunday Morning," although perhaps David Marks got short shrift. Too bad that the preceding story on Marilyn Monroe did not mention Norma Jean Baker's childhood in foster homes in Hawthorne, before she married at 16, although perhaps it was not relevant. Her first husband was later a salesman who would visit my father's machine-shop in Lawndale, and would talk of little else than his marriage to Norma Jean. She later moved 12 miles north to share an apartment near Canter's Deli, in the Fairfax, in her "salad days, when she was young and green."
