Message: There is much to be said about the legend Carroll Shelby and his contribution to the muscle car era. Some years ago I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Carroll. While at the "Fabulous Fords Forever" car show at Knott's. I was sitting with my friend, Mr. Mustang himself, Don Chambers. Don owned "Mustang Country" in Paramount and had known Carroll for many years. He said come on, there is someone I want you to meet. We went over to the tent area where the vendors were set up and a long line of fans waiting to get signed autographs from Carroll Shelby. Don and I went to the back side of the booth and there was Carroll sitting there waiting for the curtain to open and begin meeting the people. Well Don introduced me to Carroll and we chatted a bit. The workers reminded Carroll that there was a long line forming. Don and Carroll started reminiscing about the old days. I was mesmerized listening to them especially when Carroll spoke of his dislike of Ferrari. Those two talked for about forty-five minutes the Carroll excused himself and went out to sign autographs. It was quite an experience and I wished I had taken pictures. May Carroll and Don both RIP.

Message: An HHS Mothers Day story...I had dinner tonight in El Segundo on Sepulveda. During dinner I was trying to think of someone who deserved flowers for Mothers Day but might be all alone. Suddenly I thought of a '76 classmate's mother who is in her late 80s and lives alone in Hawthorne with no children within sixty miles. So I finished dinner grabbed a dozen roses and whipped over to Hawthorne. I went to her front door, knocked and called out her name. She asked who it was and I said..."Clark Millman". No, no she said, the mailman already came today. "Not the mailman" I said.."Clark Millman!" She realized who I was and let me in quite pleased with her dozen pink roses. We chatted for a half hour and I headed for home feeling all the good Karma falling on my head as I left. Leaving Hawthorne I passed HHS and seeing an open gate decided to see what was new on campus. No visible construction underway, the girls locker room was replaced with six modular classrooms! Four more modules on the south end of the boys gym. Nyman hall is still Nyman hall. The science building(16) is unchanged except for an ADA compliant elevator. Girls gym was unchanged and being used by a basketball league. I love the locker room that replaced the boys locker-room. The new one houses the boys in the west end and the girls in the east end. You gotta know some pranksters have tried to drill "peep holes" from one section into the other. No Cougar sightings because Kahuna John has made it clear I can't "stalk" on campus! I did quiz all the janitors I ran into but alas no HHS grads! Happy Mothers Day to all, reach out and touch anyone who might need a flower on Sunday!

Message: I too teach. It's cool to be appreciated (when it happens). I really didn't appreciate my teachers as much as I should of while in school. T'was later in life when I felt the call of teacherhood. The source of inspiration was Miss Clark -- who stimulated a germ of intellect using unconventional means and Coach Bunyard who showed me that everyday has a potential for fun.

Message: Today was Day of the Teacher. This is also Teacher Appreciation Week. Many of our HHS graduates have gone on to become teachers and I salute you for your dedication to helping to enrich young peoples lives. In my previous email I noted my appreciation for Ms McGinty and Mr. Bob Klein as mentors. I would also like to mention some other HHS teachers and administrators that had a big influence on me educationally and socially: Mr Repashy, Senior Government; Mrs. Jensen, Senior English; Mr. Silcox, Chemistry; Coach Plum and Coach Chauncey; Mr. Hamilton, Counselor; and of course Mr. Wallace Nyman. I am sure each one of you who reads this will have your favorite teachers and the also the one's we would just as soon done without. Let's remember the teachers that gave us that little extra nudge that pushed us out of the nest to fly into the future.

Message: While taking a refreshment break at the Edelbrock car show today we joined a group of strangers at one of the tables. This was a good group and the conversation was pleasant. When the subject turned to Edelbrock one of the guys said that he had worked for them in El Segundo after graduation from high school. I hesitated for a minute,,,should I pull a Clark and ask? Of course I should. So I said "What high school"? BAM! On my first cast I had a Cougar on the line. Our new friend turned out to be Pat Jenkins HHS class of '75. As we continued to chat I spotted a familiar face in the crowd. I recognized Lee Leonard (66) from various pictures I've seen on this site. I introduced myself to Lee and found him to be a very nice guy. He graciously took time to walk me over and show me his Cobra and his Sprint car. Nice. I introduced Lee to Pat and the last I saw them they were comparing notes about their experiences while working for Edelbrock. All in all it was a very pleasant visit and I think I should get credit for 2 sightings.

Message: If Cougartown had a 'LIKE' button, I would have used it on the recent Miss McGinty comments. She was my favorite teacher. What she taught me about the REAL guidelines and ethics of a true journalist also help teach me to listen and form my own opinions on the world around me. Those lessons have served me well. Too bad most of the today's reporters did not have the privilege of having Miss McGinty.
