Message: My donation is in the memory of Jeff Chai, a wonderful counselee and member of the Knights. Jeff wanted to be a doctor, and always signed his name Jeff Chai, MD. Jeff decided to go out for football during his senior year. He stood up in a Knight's meeting and urged us to repaint the bleachers which were in disrepair. They were to be repainted in scarlet and gold. He visited me often in my office after school, sweaty and tired, saying "I love it! I love it!" Jeff died suddenly after a Friday night game on HalCap Field. We were all in shock. The following day all of the Knights came out to finish the paint project that Jeff had initiated. I have always kept pictures of that day displayed on my bookshelf. Jeff would be so proud of this project to help the team he so loved. I hope that any former Knights who remember those sad but wonderful days would remember Jeff and Hawthorne football in the same way.

Message: This Monday is Memorial Day and the Hawthorne VFW Post 2075 and Hawthorne American Legion Post 314 will be hosting our annual remembrance program at the Hawthorne Memorial Park, located at El Segundo Blvd and Prairie Avenue. The program begins at 10:00 am and this year we have a host of honored guests: Congresswoman Maxine Waters, State Assemblyman Steven Bradford, State Senator Roderick Wright, Mayor Larry Guidi and the Hawthorne City Council members. Senator Wright has promised to speak and I can only assume most of the honored guests will speak as well. This year we will be saluting one of our own Cougars, Roy Ryse. After the program the American Legion is hosting a lunch and all are welcome. The Legion Post is located at 14124 Prairie Avenue. If you are available this Monday please attend our program. If you cannot make it to Hawthorne then find a Post near your home and attend their program. Once a year we honor those who have passed on before us. Many of these veterans died in the line of duty and paid the ultimate price for our freedoms for which we enjoy. Taking an hour out of your three-day weekend is not too much to ask. After the progran and later in the afternoon you can salute these men and women once again with a toast of your own while bar-b-queing your hot dogs and burgers. Hoist a cold beer in their name and honor them! If you can't attend an event, do the right thing and please remember them. Semper Fi. Jan

Message: Hey Glenn, don't mince words, say how you feel. However, we all come away with a different reason for giving. School spirit remembered-a need to payback HHS-a wanting to lift up good kids that aren't as blessed with "stuff" as we were. (that of which we never gave thought) But how's this: Perhaps these teens will remember the kindness of total strangers & will love the feeling of putting on those new helmets and uniforms and remember it some day when they are our age and kids reach out to them and they'll do something good for someone they don't know, just because... We'll be long gone by then but the lesson and memory will still be fresh in their minds. "Generosity when you can." As for myself, I don't care if they never win one game (but they could try hard)--as long as the lesson is realized and pay-forward (not pay-back)is in action. Stinky the Cat. (Glenn, did you get my "Save the ta ta's car magnet??)

Message: I’m not sure if some out there in Cougartown realize the football hstory at Hawthorne High. The very first graduating class moved to the new campus in 1953. The 1954 HHS football team was undefeated all the way to the CIF Small Schools final in Paso Robles. They held their own losing 47-34 to a much larger group of farm boys. The next season the same team was undefeated beating Paso Robles 35 to 20 on the way to the championship. The national season record for passing distance and touchdown completions (31) was set by that team. Many of you remember the 1959 team (how could you forget) that went undefeated all the way up to the CIF championship played in the Los Angeles Coliseum. By donating to the football team you take pressure off the other sports, as well. Hawthorne has excelled in many more sports. The prime example of this were the 1980’s Track Teams. Hawthorne was CIF champs in 1982-83–84–85–86-88–89, and CA state champs in 83–84–85-87 and 88. And this is a state that dominates national HS track. Hawthorne still holds the National HS 4 x 400 meter relay record (3:07.40) set at the Texas Relays in Austin, TX. The fastest team in the country that year (Roosevelt, Dallas, TX) finished 2 seconds behind our Cougars. The same HHS team also holds the U. S. HS sprint medley record. Cougar Girls track teams at the time held five of the fastest CA state sprint and relay records. Many college and professional athletes and coaches graduated from HHS. Football is unquestionably the largest and most expensive sport to fund. Read Coach Kanach’s letter and you’ll see. The gear is vital to the safety of the young players. The equipment is essential to re-developing a program that has languished for years. Building a team and a spirit is a difficult task. This coach really seems to have the desire to rebuild the football program. Your donations will make the difference in returning Hawthorne sports to their former glory. Let’s rescue a proud tradition. Wouldn’t it be so fine to go to a homecoming game and not walk away disappointed? Wouldn’t it be even better to see them in a CIF championship? It can happen.

Message: I've recently seen the announcements on the multi-class reunion coming up this summer and I'm considering attending. My brother recently attended the '64 reunion and has halfway convinced me that hanging out for an evening with various antiquities of that era may actually be propitious for one's HHS sentimentality, which heretofore has waned immeasurably. So, I'm curious if there any others from the class of '73 out there who are planning to attend?
