Message: Mary Lee Ton, beloved teacher and choice friend to the students at Hawthorne High in the 1950's passed away last Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the age of 93. She had been living alone in Oceanside, California, where she had resided for many years and passed quietly from incidents associated with old age.
In May of 2007, Mary Lee was unable to attend a reunion of Hawthorne High School Alumni in Long Beach, California but wrote to her former students and well-wishers at the time:
"It is my loss that I am not physically up to attending the reunion. So often something happens that triggers memories of HHS and and the people I knew there. These memories are very dear to me, for my time at Hawthorne was the highlight of my teaching years. Although I can't be there in person I certainly will be with you in spirit to share this very special occasion. With love and best wishes for a memorable reunion, Mary Lee"

So it is with us, the former students and forever friends of the effervescent and consummate educator, Mary Lee Ton: We shall remember you with "love and best wishes" awaiting that future great and grand reunion of us all!
Respectfully submitted by Buddy Youngreen, HHS Class of 1957
Sad news Buddy, Mary Ton was an icon in the early years of Hawthorne High. She will be fondly remembered by me and many others who knew her.

Hey Greg, Yes that one is a classic and has been around for probably 10 years or more. I get email on this one at least 15 times a year and once had the link on the website. Very cool.

Message: Original Beach Boys guitarist, David Marks, is partnering with the newly-formed Hawthorne Historical Society to promote that local 1960's guitar sound as a legitimate part of the city's history and culture. David feels like the authenticity of their original guitar sound got lost a bit as the Beach Boys evolved into a more vocal-oriented band and he wants to get back to the original style and techniques they came up with as kids. This is his way of honoring his partner, Carl Wilson, and their first mentor, John Walker's memory and its the historical society's way to preserve their history, so its a great partnership. As part of the "Good Neighbors Day" event on July 16th, David will be conducting a full-day guitar clinic in the Hawthorne High music room where he will demonstrate chord progressions, authentic rhythm techniques & lead figures as they were originally recorded...participants are encouraged to bring their (unplugged) electric guitars to play along so they can get a better feel for the parts. Or, you can just observe. He will hit 3 areas...surf & car songs, ballads and instrumentals. That evening, David and the Surf City All Stars will perform on the Hawthorne High football field at 7 pm...tickets are going towards the establishment of the first Hawthorne Museum. Tickets are at: eventbrite.com and clinic information and registration forms be found on: davidleemarks.com
Thank you Kathy for this information. Hope to see lots of Cougars and their guitars at Good Neighbors Day on July 16th at Hawthorne High.

Message: Congrats on going over $10,000. HHS made the Sacramento Bee again. Does anyone know Tevita Moala who graduated from HHS in 1992? He was quite the football star even playing at Oregon State. There was an article in the Sacramento Bee about someone recently finding his high school class ring that he lost years ago.
Don't know him Matt but I bet someone here does. Thanks

Message: John, great to hear from coach Joe. I remember when we were at HHS for your "62 Turns 62", we were escorted around campus by a couple of Cougar football players, they wanted to be upbeat but they seemed kind of sad.. Not knowing at the time that the program was in the midst of a long losing streak. I know that there are many smiles and stories of their big win last year!! Come August, all the smiles will be gone.. I can see it now, coach Joe riding the sled and blowing his whistle! Good Luck Cougs!! See ya all soon!
Hey man, a win comes at a price. We need MORE wins, thus a harder work ethic. It's time to mow Halcap with that sled, boys

Message: Just received an email from HHS Football Coach Joe Kanach, he writes:
Attached is the updated donation list. They have been keeping me busy, which is a good problem to have. We made our first purchase which is a 3 man sled from Rae Crowther. A much needed upgrade and one that our lineman will come to love and hate. Things are really starting to shape up, as we have started our spring drills and had a very competitive outing versus Banning and we are traveling to Southeast High School on Thursday. I also wanted to note that Jolene Vallejo donated her old washer and dryer, and that will go to good use.
In Cougar Victory, Joe Kanach
Thanks for the note, Coach Joe. It's very nice to hear that our team is being outfitted with 21st century equipment. Thanks too, to HHS88 Cougartowner, Jolene Bailey Vallejo for donating her washer and dryer. It will, no doubt, be put to good use. Fight on Cougars.

Message: It was really great seeing a lot of Cougars at the Hawthorne Memorial Day service this morning. It was a somber reminder of all that has been sacrificed so that we have the freedoms we do. The Mayor made a very good point when he spoke of how thousands of Veterans are returning home only to find no jobs. Sad indeed. On a brighter note, congratulations to everyone, too, for passing the $10,000 goal! Now, go out and fly your American flag with pride!!

Message: My donation was mailed yesterday. Here in Ohio we have done pay to play for many years. As a parent I got sick of the fundraisers, but the student athletes had to raise $ too. Even our local doctors gave sports physicals for $10.00 to $20.00 and the money was donated to the boosters. Band and choir had to raise their own funds also. The teams even have to pay the school bus drivers for rides in our old school buses to away games/events. (the high price of gas doesn't help) Parents sell tickets, work snack stands , scorekeep, ref(if qualified), anything to help and long as it meets state safety guidelines. One year we had to mow and weedwack the soccer field before the first game. The kids wear uniforms that are ten years old. Good luck on the fundraiser, but I have to tell you I am glad my last one graduated.
Hey Kathy, it is what has to happen nowadays. The money is not there and hopefully that will change in the years to come. In the meantime we do what we do to keep our kids on the athletic fields. Thank you Kathy for your generous support.

Message: Well, here's a goofy twist for ya. Tonight, at Haw VFW Bingo, I walked around with my "pass the hat" for the football donations saying, " Give me a buck or your first born son." At the end of the break, all I had was about 20 small pieces of paper with names of first born sons and their addresses and emails. Second time around I asked for a buck or their wedding rings, and so now I'm turning in $174.00. Wording really is everything. I learned to ask for gold rings from Rhett Butler.
Great job there Judy girl, you done good AGAIN. Thanks very much to the VFW Bingo crew and our own 1968 Janet Amuchastegui for your generous donations today. We're almost there folks, only $417.00 to make our goal of $10,000.00. Thanks again, to all our Cougartowners for your generous support of the HHS football program.

I'd just like to say to the rest of the Cougs out there, that every time you take a bite of a hotdog or burger or sip a beer this weekend, say a prayer for one of those GI's that made it possible.
