Message: I really enjoy reading Feedback on Cougartown because so often a comment will trigger a good memory...Carolyn Daves mentioned Ted Hastings in her post about the sale of her moms home. For those of you who were in a different era and don't know Ted, let me tell you of his shining moment in HHS sports. It was November of 1974, a mere 37 years ago and we were playing Loyola high school in a CIF quarterfinal game on Halcap field. In the fourth quater we were up by a few points but Loyola, ranked #1 in the state, was not about to lay down for lowly Hawthorne! They were driving down the field figuring one touchdown would give them the victory and propel them toward their predestined CIF championship. Inside the 30 yard line they gave the ball to their all CIF running back Fred Brown. Ted saw him coming and knew it was his moment. He hit Fred like a Mack truck. He hit him so hard that Fred suffered a concussion and all the stands said "Ewww!" as they heard the hit! Ted accomplished his purpose, Fred fumbled the ball and Robert Armbrust fell on the ball to secure the victory for the Scarlet and Gold. Although Ted was a year older, he was my teammate on both football and track. He was a good hurdler in track and was a great teammate for me to have in football because in those days alot of guys liked to try to kill the kicker in practice! Ted looked out for me maybe because he thought I might be useful some day. Thanks for your protection Ted and I'll bet Fred Brown can still feel one of the greatest hits in Hawthorne history, even 37 years later!!

Message: Small world. Just received and email from Walt Krumbach HHS class of 77. His son Kent and Ted Hasting's daughter Ashley, (Ted was HHS class of 75) bought my mother's house in Hawthorne! They are getting married in July! The day of the walk through, Walt's son saw a step ladder in the garage that was painted with SCARLET AND GOLD. Knowing that Walt went to HHS he called him over. Walt recognized it as one the cheer squad used at football games. Then he saw a plaque with "Daves" painted on it. He remarked that he went to school with me and the realtor said it had been my childhood home. The realtor also was an HHS graduate, Kathy Jenkins, class of '81. Walt relayed thanks from Kent and Ashley for the champagne and note I left in the kitchen for the new owners. Amazing coincidences!!! That house was one filled with love and I'm now certain it will continue as they start their life and family together. Made me so happy to hear this. Mom would be very very happy too! Thanks Walt for getting in touch with me.

Message: Redlands, that brings back a little memory. I don't know if anyone remembers Reading Tire on Hawthorne Blvd. The Reading's lived south of us on Ramona and, I don't remember when, but they moved to Redlands. It was a few years later I was heading east on the 10 freeway and I spotted a sign that said Reading Tire. I knew then that they had made it.

Message: There use to be (maybe still is) a summer resident Drum Major Camp at U of Redlands. I and other HHS Drum Majors attended there in the 60s and early 70s. One of the exercises was standing at attention until the first student dropped (the dry heat was unbelievable). U of Redland also had a Cheerleader Camp, and Majorette Camp, but I do not know if there were any HHS attendees.

Message: George and Janet I too granduated from U of R. The campus is beautiful, and the administration building has been used in several movies. I got my BS there some moons ago. Two famous graduates of the U of R are John Raitt and Warren Christopher. I wonder how many other HHS grads attended the U of R. It was a private Lutheran college founded in, I believe, 1903. I could be a little off on the year.
