Message: Judy, in response to your question, I moved here a couple years ago to help care for my father. He just celebrated his 90th trip around the sun about two weeks ago. I challenged him to live longer than Jack La Lanne(96). I am not affiliated with the college. For those that have never seen Redlands I encourage you to visit. It's like a mini Pasadena. It was established in the late 1800's as a place for the wealthy living on the east coast to "winter". We have many well preserved Victorian mansions and "Craftsman" style homes as well as a great parks and world renown Lincoln Shrine where scholars from all over come to study Abe. We are also about 20 minutes from the highest waterfall in Southern California located in Forest Falls. (One doesn't need to get out of the car to view the falls). My favorite places are the Library and Gerrards Market. After a visit you will know why. We also have a great outdoor concert series in our amphitheater. Ya'all stop by and visit on your way to Palm Springs sometime.

Message: Attended Keiths memorial service and it was great. Much more of a "celebration of life" rather than a mourning of his passing. As someone else said, tons of Cougars there as there should be and I have one story that must be told...I was sitting near the back of the main sanctuary and tried to recognize classmates from that vantage point. At the reception following the service I saw a classmate I had not seen since '76. I told her I spotted her because her hair was still as pretty from behind as it was in high school. She responded by saying she was bummed, because she was hoping that I recognized her cute butt and that it had not changed since high school. I grabbed my tongue with both hands as a witty response escaped me.

Message: While working as a Docent at the "Meet and Greet" area of the Living Desert yesterday, I discovered that I was visiting with Dr. Don Brann and his wife, both Hawthorne High School graduates. Later in the day two former students, Rod Blair and Bruce George, left a message stating that they had missed me by an hour or so. It would have been great to see them again. I'm at "Meet and Greet", the initial area as one enters the Living Desert, from 9:00AM to 12:30 PM every Saturday, and would look forward to meeting any former Cougars and, if convenient, provide a special tour as well. Thanks, Cougartown! (And you too, John Baker!)
Little Donny Brann with surfer hair and a Pendleton is a doctor? MAAANN I am out of touch Thanks Bob, for the Cougar Sighting . . . . Hey, is the Living Desert in Redlands?

Message: Small world George! And, Neil, it's ok we all get to choose the line we get in, and the world needs bull throwers, err.... riders too!
I'm sure Old RU has a beautiful sprawling, green, ivy covered, walled-in campus. I was talking about that bull riding academy they have out there. HEY, Neil mentioned the Circle K..

Message: Hey, Neil & J,B,;Believe it or not, Univ. of Redlands has a beautiful campus and very good instructors. I was fortunate enough to slip through the crack, I even made he Deans list. LOL, I'm not sure what list, but I got notification that I made his list. That was back in 1975/76 though, maybe back then they didn't much to choose from. The main problem is that Redlands gets hotter than heck in the summer time.Jorge

Message: I'm glad I attended Keith Jones' memorial service today. He had a very full life, many friends - many loved him. Someone asked all the Cougs in the church to raise their hands - most of the people there raised their hands. He had planned so much as indicated on his web site. Sad to see one pass away so soon. Wish he could have made it to one of our Ctown picnics or cruise nights.
Thanks Don.

Message: Funny Eric, funny! I see you now live in Redlands? Just wondering if you are affiliated with Redlands U? Got my BA there many moons ago and you never know, Cougars are every where. We had such awesome teachers at HHS (I know there were exceptions) that it is great to see how far their influence may have carried us.

Message: Had a great lunch today with a bunch of Cougars! The group included Ray Millman('71), Wade Greasby('73), Marianne Dowell ('74) and myself('76). Lots of good Hawthorne stories and a good time had by all. Wade was varsity quarterback my freshman year and Marianne was the song girl all us young freshmen lusted after so I got to dine with upperclass heroes of my youth! It was the consensus that the Greasby house was the best party house in Hawthorne!
That's what it's all about Clark, thanks for sharing.

Message: Does anyone else remember the 16MM films in school that were all hosted by Dr. Frank C. Baxter (aka Dr. Research)? He was the narrator / host of educational, soft Pro-American Propaganda films from 1956 thru 1966. Baxter a distinguished bald gentleman with wire glasses, wore a suit & tie. Several of his features made for TV produced by AT&T. Recently caught a glimpse of Dr. Baxter on You Tube - his face & voice brought back a flood of early childhood memories of these Baxter programs that we were all forced to sit through in school. I always got an instant positive reaction when upon walking into a classroom would spy the “A/V” metal rolling stand with a Projector mounted on top and those big mouse ear reels – because it meant that soon the lights would be out & I could take a nap, or at least it insured the class period would be a “skate”. Alternately these films were presented in Nyman Hall on the big screen with the amplified PA system. Younger people who only know VHS or total digital media don’t have a clue about an “A/V” Dept. at a High School . On these rare occasions several classes would be herded into the auditorium, again this was a much cherished moment for students, knowing it was basically a skate, & probably a skate for the teachers as well! Recently caught a glimpse of Dr. Baxter on You Tube

Message: Well, I've been reading a lot of "feedback" from the early days until present through John Baker's wonderful site, and a lot of great memories popped up in my head. Stores that have come and gone such as: Zody's, Robert Hall's, Kresge's. [I worked at all three (3)] from 1963 through 1966 before I received my 'draft' notice. I started at $1/hr., which was min. wage in 1963. I reside in Denver, CO, where it's not unusual for a waitress or waiter to earn less than minimum wage; i.e., $2.95/hr. + tips, but a big shock to me. The streetcars that highlighted the main thorougfare of Hawthorne boulevard through Inglewood now seem like a far off dream. I remember the beige-coloured ones boasting a green stripe around each car just above center, well below the windows. It was exciting to see the plethora of streetcars in Downtown Los Angeles. Extending from each streetcar was its' electrical connection to the thick, black wire in a bevy of wires extending themselves throughout the city.

Message: To Janet Burkett, (I'm going to get slammed by the ladies) you were probably every mans dream on that date, men would be sorry you outgrew "mute". To Jean Macernie, I remember Eddie too and have attached my research. Here's his story In one commercial, Nalbandian said of his low prices "My friends all ask me, 'Eddie, are you kidding?' And I tell them no, my friend, I am not kidding." This inspired the Frank Zappa song "Eddie, Are You Kidding?". Good Interview and photo. 5467 Wilshire is now occupied by a Walgreens drug store.
