Message: I think that suit guy may have been Robert Hall?? Boy, that's a name from the past. One of my first "big girl dates" was with one of the life guards at the pool. Huge, blond "older" guy named Eric. (Gene Badstubner would remember). We went to one of those really impressive theaters in Inglewood. I just remember being so nervous I probably acted mute most of the evening. I sure outgrew that!

Message: I remember Vic Tannys...I went there once when I was a kid with my cousins Velma and Henry Hahlbeck. In the back of my head I always thought Jack LaLanne had a place in Hawthorne....but I wasn't sure if I was right or not. Now I know it was true. I remember seeing a commercial on tv all the time about some guy selling mens suits. I can't remember the name though. The store was either in Inglewood or Hawthorne...The commercial was on just way too much...

Message: I found an old 45 record by the Beach Boys at a garage sale in town. I don't remember this song, do you? (or maybe I would if I heard it again) "Do It Again", flip side is Wake the World. On Capitol records & the 1st side reads - A Summer Single. B. Wilson - M. Love on the 1st side; B.Wilson - A.Jardine on the back side. Thinking about framing it or selling it depending on what it's worth!

Message: Eric;Palos Verdes Estates, on the cliffs overlooking the old "Dominator" merchant ship freightor that crashed & ran agound in the 60's below the cliffs. After a late movie or a good party, after it was dark, it was a great place to park. LOL, there were always a cadry of HHS'ers parked up there, but everybody stayed in their cars with the windows rolled up & fogged for some reason or another. LOL Jorge

Message: Hey, Jack LaLanne died, remember he had a gym on Hawthorne Bl., I think near the "Melody Music" or "Jim Clinton" (pre-cursor to 3-day suits) stores. It (Jack LaLanne gym) was later sold and converted to a Vic Tanney's gym. Don't ask me why I remember this cr-p. Jack LaLanne was way ahead of his time, he was as I remember, the first person to commercialize workout gyms nationwide. He was also one of the first to sell neutrision foods & supplements. I bet if Keith Jones was still around, he would have a comment or two. Jorge

Message: There were two classy theaters in Westchester. The Loyola and my favorite was the Paradise. I remember the Paradise had one of those "cry rooms" in the back. I also remember taking in a movie there and being surprised with an advertised second feature. I had no idea what the film was or what it was about but got bored with it part way through and walked out....I never did that again. The film was M.A.S.H. and it was a test pre-screening. The photo of the street cars lined up looks like they are getting ready to race. Speaking of races, where was the "best spot" to see the submarine races?

Message: Well Jorge, of course I remember the old Lennox movie theater. In the late 40s they used to have big prize nights there (I forget what it was called exactly) and the place was packed. They gave out cash prizes and appliances, so for a quarter or maybe less it was “Las Vegas” time. The movie that I remember best seeing there was Bedtime for Bonzo with Ronald Reagan. It was a favourite of mine and my sisters’. We used to get our parents to take us just about anywhere to see it. And Howard, it was the United Artist that had the glassed in section for parents with babies. But John, I’m like 5% positive that the Ritz was not on Market Street, but rather on a street parallel to Market. After looking at the video about the Fox as it is now, I can say no wonder a first grader in 1949 was so impressed with the place. The movie I remember seeing there umpteen times in 1953 was Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. I’ve just made a copy of it and it is just as I had remembered it. I mean Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell in those sequined, scarlet, slit-up-the thigh dresses are still hot. And what bodies – OH MY GOD!!! My crush on Marilyn, however, initially started out at the Plaza when I saw her in Niagara. It was love at first sight. Thanks for the memories and th-th-th That’s All Folks! Jim Peppers

Message: Because I'm just a youngster compared to you guys from the 60's I have a vague recollection of the tracks around Inglewood and Hawthorne but remember clearly the endless web of overhead cables throughout the Los Angeles area. I remember being mesmerized by the arcs and sparks that would emanate from the contact poles on top of the many electric buses (especially in the fog and rain). The photo today reminded me of taking the diesel bus downtown to the Fox and (just like the guy in the photo) walking across the street to the SavOn to get the least expensive candy bars around. Where everyone else sold them for 5 cents you could get 2 for 5 cents at SavOn Drugs. It was in 1964 I took the bus to see A Hard Days Night at the Fox. Thanks for the memory jogger. Now back to working on the August multiclass.net reunion.

Message: Hey, John & Jim; Do you remember the old movie house that was in Lennox on the W/side of Hawthorne Bl. near Arbor Vitae I think it was called the "Lennox Theater". It was later turned into a matress store and evetually burnt down. I remember going to that show a few times, it was really dumpy, but it only cost a quarter to get in, I don't remember any of the movies I saw there, but they had to be old ones that were ready to be pulled from the market by the distributers because it was so cheap.Jorge

Message: Jimmy, the FOX THEATER was the best place to go to the show. Ritz was a little theater -- United Artist just wasn't that cool... and..aren't you all listening to me!! "BALCONY - BOYS - POP CORN THROWING - SMOKING ALLOWED IN THA BALCONY - AND PICK UPS IN THE LAST ROW. " Again, I only know this because I saw it go on. I was too busy watching Carol Lindly and Brandon DeWilde get out of "trouble" in Blue Denim. (probably got in trouble because they met at the Fox Theater in the balcony)

Message: This morning I am reading the local newspaper, The Sacramento Bee, & read about a bizarre hit-and-run that happened in Hawthorne on Crenshaw Blvd. I read how a pedestrian was run over "twice", a second person was hit while trying to give aid & then a third person who stopped was attacked by a mob, beaten & had his cell phone stolen. I tried to reconcile these events with the memory I had when I lived in Hawthorne.... These aren't the kind of people I remember... but then again, I left Hawthorne a loooong time ago.. Times change and I guess the societal make up of a community change also... Too bad... As seen on the postings of Cougartown, we have had a lot of good people go through HHS. I hope the current & future graduates of HHS will continue that tradition

Message: Well, I have to join in on the Cougar chorus about the streetcar photos. They are really special and the comments have been fascinating. I remember some of the things that have been discussed i.e. the old washer woman (thanks Judy), but who knew where she was? I too remember the mannequin cobbler that had nails in his mouth, but where was he again? Now I have another question. I remember the Fox and the United Artist cinemas, albeit my memory is apparently much more glorious than the reality. The question: there was another cinema a block west (I suppose) from the Fox. I believe it was called the Ritz, while in fact it was a pretty shabby place. What street was it on? How do you guys maintain such good recollections? I can hardly remember the names of the streets. My sister, Sherry, insists that we used to ride the streetcar to Inglewood – who knew??? I have just another small question. Wasn’t there a cinema called the Fifth Avenue? Was there a street called Fifth Avenue in Inglewood? My hat goes off to you all for these memories. I think this jarring of the old memory cells is good for us. Now what was I talking about? Keep up the good work. Jim Peppers

Message: Hey Jerry, LOL,My wife Arlene & I just went to the local movie show a short time ago & I bought two senior tickets for $15.00, we saw "The Fighter", good movie too. Inside the show, I purchased a large popcorn and a medium Sprite for $16.50. LOL, I'm going to start getting my candy somewhere else before I go again, like I did back in the old days. I think back when we were kids you could get into the show for $1.25 if you were under twelve. Popcorn was 25 or 50 cents, candy was 15 to 25 cents and soft drinks were I believe 25 & 35 cents, back then they only had two drink sizes, big & small, no medium. Maaaan how things have changed, for $3.00, you could ride R/T, see a movie (two movies + a cartoon), buy refreshments and have money left over. LOL, unless you went and bought marbles, trading cards W/gum or something else with the left over change.Jorge

Message: John, you are teasing us with one picture at a time - it's great getting them like this. Like going on an adventure. This latest one is the best (then, I think, as I see them, that they are all the best). Walking from one side of Market St to the other side is something I remember well. Not a particularly big deal, but these pictures bring back those memories. Was there an intersection, just before one got into the actual downtown part of Inglewood, where there was a split on Hawthorne Blvd that took you to the right (west) and onto the street just below Market St? I may not be remembering that right, but, once again, I have dreamt that there was.

Message: Another great pic John. Looks like around 1953 or 4. About that time smog was getting bad. I can remember hearing on the radio and on the TV news that smog kills! My sis was born in spring of 54 and I was 9 at the time. After hearing that smog kills, I would go in and check on my baby sister to make sure the smog hadn't done her in. If I couldn't hear or see her breathing I would put my hand on her and she would wake up and start crying. My mom would give me H-Columbia for it, but it didn't stop me from checking on her several times a day. One of my twins was a blue baby and from time-to-time forget to breathe. I used to check and wake her up too and I would get the same H-Columbia from Ms. Vicki. I was told not to wake a sleeping baby. Luckily, one of the peds nurses where I worked solved my problem. She gave me a big cotton wad and told me to place it on the baby's back while she was sleeping, then with a flashlight I could shine the light on the cotton wad and watch it go up and down and see she was still breathing, problem solved. I still catch H-Columbia now and then, but not for waking sleeping baby's.
