Message: Good bye my little brother Keith. I still remember you as the small kid who hung out at the park and baseball fields, always so eager to get into the game with the big kids. Although your life was too short, you got into the games and made a difference. Your life was rich and full of experiences because you took the risks and never shied away from challenges. You became the King in your world and leave lots of folks behind who will miss you very much. I hear up there in the real big leagues, they are looking for a big, strong catcher who could hit some dingers a country mile, almost as far as Gary Mykannen's shots :-). The best news is they are giving you back your 18 yo body with no aches, pains or strange spider infections. Take care of yourself big guy and I will be looking for you behind the plate when it is my time to take the journey home. Save a spot for me on the bench.

Message: Sad to hear that another of my classmates has passed away. That's about five or six for the class of 76 in the past year! I thought a good story about Keith might raise some folks from their depressed mood.....It was our freshman year, the fall of 1972, Keith and I were on the freshman football team, one day at lunch in the first weeks of school we were told (probably by some devious sophomores) that as freshman it was our responsibility to try to run through senior square. I sized up the seniors guarding senior square (the class of 73 had some big boys), and decided it was not in the best interest of my health to give it a go. Not Keith though, he sauntered over, sized up the seniors and took off in a full sprint. Unfortunately his effort was to no avail as the seniors nabbed him and Keith experienced the obligatory head first dump into a trash can. Keith had not hesitated though and we respected him for the effort and followed in his footsteps in the weeks to come with many similar results. Keith was a character but those folks make life interesting and the class of '76 was better off for his presence! Let's celebrate his life more so than mourn his passing. Clark Millman president, class of 1976
There you go Clark, thanks for the Keith story.

Message: My word! Look at the number of posts stating what a total LOSS we've suffered with Keith's unexpected and untimely death! I hope we were all this supportive when he was alive because he WAS a special human being, bigger than life itself. He always seemed eager to "give" of himself to his fellow man in any way he could. He was obviously full of love, a love as big as his big ol' body, literally overflowing. And what wonderful experiences ... hard to believe in his short life that a person could have all those wonderful times. But also all of the suffering he endured, both mentally and physically. It wouldn't surprise me a bit that the "natural causes" of his death had something to do with that brown recluse spider bite he experienced in 1998. He went through hell with that!! Read his bio ... it is well worth the read Ctowners! WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL PERSON! We emailed for a while about 10 or 11 years ago. When I began with the first email, I figured he would just think, "What does that old broad want!?", but not so. We communicated ... genuinely communicated. He told me all about his spider bite and the resulting very bad health he had experienced from time-to-time -- even sent me pictures of the bite, and the discoloring and swelling of his leg. He shared his love for his daughters; and on and on. HE SHARED! He was the REAL THING! HONEST to a fault! GENUINE! I will miss him tremendously! And although I sound like CT's MOTHER, let it be a hard-learned lesson ... to ALWAYS let those you love, KNOW YOU LOVE THEM! Before it's too late. Okay, off the soapbox for now. Love you Keith!!!

Message: Hey KEITH I LOVVVVVE YOU MAAAANNNN...classmate...and am so sorry that we are now on other sides of the Big Islands, but likely yours is still the better shore. You once gave me something that I have thought of often, right here...there was this discussion of rehabilitating our HHS Senior Square, and someone recommended putting a sundial in it, and Right away you jumped in and said something, "Hey, how about a sundial with a surfer on it?" I thought it was a really cool idea, a little kitsch, a little pop, perfectly Hawthornian. (If not HHS, there should be one at, say, Sloopy's.) I know you were both of Haytown and Hawaiian at heart and loved the surf culture deep in you in both places, so to you I have to send out a Shaka and the Aloha spirit and say No Keia La, No Keia Po, A Mau Loa., forever, man, Joseph

Message: Condolences to Keith Jones' family. Keith was a great guy. Although we never met in person, I counted him as a friend. When Keith was living in Hawaii he helped me find a restaurant in Honolulu where I could get a gift certificate for my son in Honolulu. In our email conversations Keith mentioned a friend of his who worked in the same area as my son. Small world - my son did know Keith’s friend. Keith and his stories will be missed.

Message: As to Green Farms BBQ, I worked there most of my high school years, '57-60. It was originally located on Hawthorne Blvd, north of El Segundo Bl, on the westside. To the north was Lee's Barber shop. Everyone knew Lee and Pat and "flat top" haircuts. Next door, going north was a bar. To the south was Orange Julius. A little old guy that owned the Orange Julius said it was very good with vodka. South of that was Ivy's Coffee Shop. (I think it burned down in the early 60's). Going around the corner on El Segundo, heading west was Slim's Coin Shop. (Billy Wilson and Lester Moss, do you remember?) I think around '59-'60, Jack Swatman, who owned the property (Green Farms, Lees and the bar, also a vacant lot) decided to build a 3 story office building on the property. Green Farms moved to Hawthorne Blvd. and 132nd on the SE corner. I worked there off and on a couple more years. Sid Swarts owned it and was a wonderful and generous man. Best BBQ ribs and roast beef around here!

Message: It's SO sad about Keith. How did he die, btw? And, is there anyone planning a memorial for him in the So Bay? That would be a nice way to honor him, from his many friends on CT, & also his HHS friends could pay their respects. Prayers go out to his family. RIP Keith..you were a gentle giant..you lived a remarkable life, it's SO sad it was cut WAY too short!
