Message: Thomas, glad to hear it, now send Konnie a check. You can be sure she's teaching today's students with the same integrity and philosophy with which she taught us. She hasn't changed. No, not true- she's gotten better. Like a fine wine... About those 25c words, I concur with John- my son used to charge ME 25c for each "bad" word I used... I'll never forget the USC game we went to with Konnie and Zak Krislock; Zak used a few 25c words of his own that day; Mikey told him he had to pay 25 cents for each bad word. Zak pulled out his wallet, handed Mikey a $20, said "That should cover me for a while." Also, I talked to Gary Shambaugh about their reunion; next year would be the class of 76's 35 year anniversary, so if there's room, we might just lasso up a crowd of 76ers and crash their party. Keep in mind, 76ers.

Message: With the mention of Konnie Krislock I couldn't help but recall her role in my decision to attend SDSU, thus leading to the godsend of life in San Diego. Looking back, it's strange to think that I was captivated by journalism to such a degree that it factored into my choice of higher education. However, with what little journalistic integrity is left out there today, the thought of journalism scholarship does spark a bit of curiosity about how the subject is dealt with in the modern classroom. Nevertheless, I imagine whatever Konnie is promoting is undoubtedly worthwhile. By far the most influential teacher I had at HHS.

Message: Yay Karen Masters!! You are going to include us lowly 74'ers!! We have some very special friends - and siblings - in those "upper classes" and are always looking for a good time. I'll probably have my little sister (c/o 76) tag along because mom and dad ALWAYS made the older siblings take the younger wherever we went. Just ask Steve, c/o 71. In fact, maybe I can get his butt down here from Oregon for this one! Also, Jimmy Peppers, that Joe Mailander is one good writer isn't he?? I love the words he comes up with. He'd have made a mint at my house. I raised my daughter so that she'd earn a quarter for every "25 cent word" she used. Taught her to beef up and spruce up her vocab and she really is good at it. We LOVE words - Konnie helped us learn to use them well. Thanks for any donation you make. And listen, Konnie is Greek and next time she's making a trek to Greece, she'll look you up and likewise, I hope. Anyway, I digress....or splinter...or whatever...Boat drinks, love, peace and Happy EARTH Day to you all. XOXO

Message: Mr. Mailander is indeed a good writer – and he has written for a good cause. I enjoyed his story and he had me guessing as to whom he was referring. Does anybody really like being stabbed in the back? I thought many of my teachers were real nut cases – but in the end I suppose I was the nut case. More than anything, I want to congratulate myself because it’s one of the few times that I can remember that Mr. Mailander didn’t use a word that I needed to look up. I’m glad he’s writing down to our level. I only have eight and a half years of university credit to my name, and it was down right embarrassing when Joseph used words that I had never seen in print – and I’m a voracious reader. So, I hope that everyone will get on this bandwagon and support what is apparently a good cause. And shame on the LAUSD!!

Message: HEY JOHN and I LOVE YOU MAAAANNNNN and listen up! I see some other alumnae of the Old Skool of Konnie Krislock have chimed in here already, but I also want to add my own testimonial. There was a time, thirty-five years ago to be precise, when I was hoping to receive a little cash myself from my dear old school HHS to attend college. And when the senior awards night came, the teacher to whom I was closest, Bill Goodfellow, handed me a note a couple of hours before the ceremony and told me to go away someplace and read it. I still have the note, it meant so much to me. The note, a full-page letter, told me that I wouldn't be receiving any awards--because one teacher in particular shot me down three times, even though I had been up for three awards. Man, I was about to burn down the school. The memory still rankles me today. So this is why I say to you and your readers: sure, give to Konnie's cause, but also if you don't give, you are doing your part too. Because nothing inspires good writing like ANGER, maaaannn! Just a couple of weeks ago I was interviewing some really big shot, and I was sitting there waiting in her office lobby, and I said to myself, "Dude, just enjoy yourself, because back in high school, there was a certain teacher who didn't even feel like investing in this moment -- as a matter of fact, that teacher wanted to make your life more miserable, and that teacher failed." And it does turn out that while Cougartown is often all fun in the sun, ANGER about high school also takes you a long, long way in life, as long a way as any other kind of emotion does. So here's my bottom line on this matter: if you Cougs sit on your duff and don't give any money to KEK, that's OK too; because if her student are real scribes, they'll just get all the more angry and go out there and tear up the world anyway. But here's another path: because of the online world, and because of ferocious California budget cutbacks, everybody today is wondering where the hell the future of journalism is, and they're fearful for it. It's really funny in the LAUSD, for instance, where they have basically quit teaching journalism, and yet the press department public relations flacks for the LAUSD is one of the biggest administrative departments the district has. These times aren't like thirty-five years ago when we had actual curriculum classes in journalism -- no, the students have to now learn journalism on the sly after school as though it's some kind of disdainful cult. Even so, for me, this question about "what is the future of journalism" isn't even a question. Many people don't know what the future of journalism is, but I'll tell you right now, the future of journalism is precisely where it was thirty-five years ago--the future of journalism is wherever people like KONNIE KRISLOCK enter a classroom, during school or after, and do their work. I only had two journalism teachers in my life, KEK and some guy named Fred Friendly. I learned more in KEK's classes...what I'm saying is, if she's asking, at least consider giving. It's OK if you don't, because journalism lives on whether you do or not--but consider giving. Checks can be made to OCHSA JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP and sent to KONNIE KRISLOCK at 8 ANZA STREET, NEWPORT BEACH, 92663. Peace and boat drinks.

Message: May I also add that donations to Konnie Krislock's journalism scholarship fund are TAX DEDUCTIBLE! The school will send a thank you letter to the name and address on your check- so, now you can double your contribution! Konnie was (and still is) an amazing teacher, and friend. Searching through my stash of memorabilia recently, I came across several awards I had won during the four years of my "Journalism Journey" in high school. Boy, did that bring back some very fond memories! So I challenge all you "Journalism Junkies" to make a donation to Konnie's cause, as a small token of thanks to a lady who taught us a lot about WWWWHandW. And please mail it today, the deadline looms!

I want to challenge any Cougar out there who can remember how special it was (is) to be one of Konnie's Kids, to donate to this scholarship. This is a great opportunity to thank her. I'm sending mine in "In Honor of Konnie Krislock". Email Jill or me or you can email Konnie directly at kekrislock@sbcglobal.net.
