Message: Those Greasbys are just rabble rousers John. What do you expect from Oklahomans. I have put up with that kind of nonsense from the day I met their Dad. I hated answering the phone when Nebraska and Okie played if Okies won, it was difficult not to... well let's not go there. However, when brother Billy was a Husker [always] the Greasbys were Huskers, 'cause that is what Cougars do, support each other. Nuff said Wade now shut the beep up! gbr
OK then

Message: I received an email this afternoon from former journalism teacher Konnie Krislock. She has learned that her students at the OC High School of the Arts will not be recognized at Senior Awards Night because they are no longer considered an academic class. Konnie was only able to get them onto the program by offering a scholarship. There are two students of hers who fought really hard for 1st Amendment rights for Charter schools, and Konnie feels that these two students should be honored. If you want information on how to help Konnie achieve her goal, please contact me privately by email, and I will give you the information. Thank you.
Thanks Jill....

Message: That Mary Ann is really a smart lady but Bo is an Ohio guy then Nebraska; LSU was only a stop over until the husker nation could rise up and get him back-Turner Gill was my choice. As for the choice of Kiffin, Monty is the reason the KID got the job. Monty is the smartest DC in AMERICA. Oh yeah, he was a Husker too and the Dc when DR was at Nebraska.
Thank you Mr Sloey for your in-depth report on all the coaches in the NCAA and how you feel about each and every one of them but you have the wrong website. You should be airing it out on a USC/Nebraska/LSU/Big Ten Blog somewhere. This is for Hawthorne/Cougar talk.

Message: Thanks Jim for the info. I had that info. I don't want to go through any PR person, or agent or manager. All that means is that it will cost more money. This needs to be a charitable thing where usual fees are waived or greatly reduced or it won't work.

Message: Speaking of Red - keep an eye on Arkansas' rocket arm qb Ryan Mallett this fall. Coach Petrino's got the overall talent to make a run for the SEC title and a BCS bowl game ... Maybe they'll meet up with the NEW USC Trojans. AD Mike Garrett picked a good HC, IMO. Yes, I'm ready for football! Pro basketball and baseball are boring. Okay, JB - no more from The Razorback Nation - except that the Huskers are also looking good with another HC from the SEC -sorry, Greasbys.

I was there that day. Nice concert but don't remember anything special.

Message: Keith -- Apart from personal contacts from his long-time Cougar friends, Brian is probably best contacted through his publicist, Jean Sievers. She can be reached at: jsievers@lippingroup.com. She also represents Jeff Bridges, who thanked her publicly several times during his recent awards for CRAZY HEART. It may be best to have an event planned first in which Brian could be invited to participate. Of course, the flip side of that is if he agreed to participate, the event would easily fall into place. Naturally, you may want to invite Al Jardine, as well. He was a driving force behind the formation of the band. Best of luck -- Jim

Message: Can you imagine how much money and publicity HHS would recieve if Brian would do a benefit concert on the football field. Holy cow. HHS could buy anything they want. Not including all the sponsor money that could be raised. It could easily reach into the low millions. Count me in on that promotion
Keith, You are now IN CHARGE of that event. We have all the friends of Brian and all the resources to get it done. You brought it up and you ARE a promoter. So what is stopping you? Get started my friend.

Message: Hello Cougars -- Thank you Milt for the kind words in your post. I enjoyed speaking with you the other day and learning about The Night Owls dance band, Dr. (now also Reverend) Fred Morgan, and some reminiscences about Brian Wilson and Al Jardine (both HHS '60). The song with the sax solo that we spoke about is SHUT DOWN and it was the flip side, or B side, for those of us who remember vinyl, of SURFIN USA, released March 4, 1963. It built on the success of Surfin Safari and 409 from 1962, and was the song that really brought the Beach Boys to national fame. Of course, it also caught the attention of Chuck Berry. The melody for Surfin USA was borrowed heavily from Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen. Berry sued for copyright infringement and won. Later pressings of Surfin USA have Berry's name. The recent movie Cadillac Records (the story of Leonard Chess and Chess Records) dramatizes the moment Berry heard Surfin USA on the radio and realized it was inspired by his music. Work on my book is progressing nicely, and many Cougars have contacted me with interesting stories and recollections, adding immeasurably to its enjoyment. I thank each one of them. This will be a very positive look at the band in its beginnings as told against the social and cultural backdrop of America in the 1950s and the birth of rock and roll. I am a life-long Beach Boys fan. My brother and I first saw them in Carnegie Hall in the early 1970s. They opened with Wouldn't It Be Nice. Hearing their music and their voices filling that Hall was unforgettable. Pure joy. Brian Wilson and the music of the Beach Boys continues to make millions of people happy. How great is that? My book will celebrate that legacy when it was just in its infancy. I have no interest in adding to what has already been written about their darker moments. There's plenty of that out there. My book leads up to and focuses on their first year when they were six young guys forming a band to play music and meet girls, and boy wouldn't it be great if we could get paid doing it. So it's relatively easy to stay positive when your focus is that first year. I'm not looking for any dirt/gossip or hints of problems to come. There's been enough painful things written about them. I get the sense that some Cougars, especially Class of 60 alum, have been, well, if not burned, perhaps a little singed, by their previous participation with other authors or teleplay writers working on the TV movie done about the band a few years back. That is understandable and regrettable. I would very much like the opportunity to work with you and set the record straight. Every writer builds upon the previous works on a subject, but the danger of using earlier books as primary sources is the potential of replicating errors. That's why a current, first-hand interview is an opportunity to correct an error or more accurately explain something that got skewed. I'm very sensitive to how easily things can be taken out of context and a two-hour interview can be distilled down to a few sentences that do not truly reflect the spirit of the conversation. I don't do that. I never will. This is a happy, joyous story. Even if you don't love their music, most of these guys came from Hawthorne, walked those high school hallways, and probably cheered when the 59 Cougar varsity football team beat the Samohi Vikings 14-12 on Saturday, November 21. [From Chapter One: "The game's first score came in the first quarter when Cougar quarterback Steve Andersen hit Russ Jacobsen with a sixty yard pass and run play. Ron Petch kicked the extra point and the Cougars led 7-0."] And, the day before the big game, Principal Nyman announced to the school that Coach Hal Chauncey was retiring from varsity football. So, instead of the inspirational 'Win one for the Gipper,' it was 'Win one for Chauncey.' I would very much like to speak with some of the Class of 60 alum who can help bring positive light and life to the early Beach Boys story. On a personal note, I'm a veterinarian in my other life, so sometimes it really is a zoo out there, and the dogs and cats, not to mention the iguanas, ferrets, and rabbits, keep me away from the book. Pet Sounds, indeed. Oh, by the way Milt, it's Murphy, not Murray. But no matter. You know those Irish names, they either start with an M or an O. And, as my Dad used to say, "You can call me anything. Just don't call me late for supper." Thanks again, Milt, keep in touch. Best of luck with the grapes! And, as always, thank you John B. for allowing me to post and for being the creative force behind such a great community website. All the best, Jim Murphy (bfinkmurphy@yahoo.com)
Hey Jim, Thanks for the insight and comments.
Actually I think Al nailed the sax clip, as it sounds like every garage band sax clip of that era. Also, too bad you mentioned Russ Jacobsen's pass play. Now El Rojo will have to relive it here AGAIN on Feedback. Just kidding Russ, WE LOVE YOU MAAAANN.
Please keep us informed on the book and as to when it will be out. I would like to read a positive book on our Boys. These guys were all right no matter what the books say. Fame has eaten up countless Rock stars of that era and the Beach Boys (or remnants thereof) are still making music a half century later.

Message: To Peter Nelson: If you are looking for suggestions: 1) City of Hawthorne could give their favorite Beach Boy(s) Brian, the key to the city, then 2) Hawthorne City Council declare Brian's Wilson's birthday official city 'Beach Boy Day' then, 3) Some kind of tribute concert at the Hawthorne Memorial Center, which might attract some of his music friends, and tickets sold could help fund HHS music/sports/arts program, or 4) Interest some network (MTV) to film an HHS honorium for Brian in the boy's gym.
