Message: I would like to thank everyone involved in maintaining and adding to this Cougartown site. I recently sold the "Family Home" on 123rd Place. I know that many of us have already been through this. My brother Bob and I had a lifetime of great memories of growing up in Del Aire. I moved to Northern California many years ago, but still had family that kept me close to the neighborhood. Now that I have no real connection any longer, I truly appreciate being able to check in regularly and share in all of your memories. Folbs, Tinkertown, The Boston Store, Melody Music and the big old Thriftymart T are in my mind like they were just there yesterday. Thank you again for allowing me to share in your memories.

I think he drove a really old buick or ford with a license frame that said "Mafia Car" Geez, I remember that, but I don't remember where I put my keys? Hope everyone is keeping dry and warm.

LOVED the picnic, meeting old friends and new, we had a great turnout, and as always I had so much fun I can hardly stand it!!! thank you all for coming out. The ginger cookies were OMG amazing, the apple cake divine, the rum cake HEAVENLY, the fudge sinfully delicious. The pineapple cake was- well, okay, but it really needed some RUM to make it sizzle! next time! Carmen and Carol Fischler joined us at their first Cougartown picnic and had a wonderful time- let this be a lesson to all you lurkers who don't come out to join in the fun- in the words of a famous Governator, they'll be back! Dennis Rigdon, minus the walker, what a pleasure to meet you! ALL of the Bainbridge family: Steve, Mike, Kathy, and Rick (who came all the way from Georgia to spend his birthday with us and ended up giving us all back and neck rubs-what a gift!!!) Did I mention I had the BIGGEST crush on Rick in the 8th grade, lucky for him he was clueless. In the words of a famous mayor, I love you each, I love you all!

Message: Jerry Dowell: My sincere sympathies and condolences to the Dowell family. Having had the pleasure of knowing Jerry when I was a "punkie reserve" at Hawthorne Fire, I knew him to be a sensitive man with a "courteous sense of humor," never joking at another's expense. His priorities were in order as he placed his family first. Jerry was also one to "think before he spoke," something practiced by many and mastered by few. Jerry was not a tall man but truly was a "big guy" in the ways that count. Rest in peace, Jerry! Jim

Message: To all the 70's Orange County Cougs. I have not forgotten that a few months ago I said that I would organize a mini reunion for those behind the Orange Curtain. I apologize for not following through. Unfortunately, due to a ongoing family matter, I have not had the time, nor the energy to pursue this endeavor. However, don't despair, things are getting better and I will be able to put something on in the near future. Just stay tuned to Cougartown, and I will pick a date, time and place. I hope everyone had fun at the picnic today. Wish I could've been there, but my oldest son went to his Homecoming dance tonight, so there were corsages to buy, shirts to press and ties to tie. I don't recall Hawthorne having a formal dance for Homecoming. I believe it was pretty casual. But seeing my boy getting ready for a big night, sure brought back memories. Ah, to be 16 again.

Dowell (Jerry), passed away this morning at the VA hospital in Prescott. I can't even describe the incredible loss I feel and the gift to be able to be with him this week through the process. I will miss him dearly. I love you, Dad. He will be honored with a 21-gun salute ceremony at a later date." I remember Mr. Dowell and he was a good man. Message: Hello, I am from a Hawthorne High family--the O'Briens, who attended HHS, circa 1963 through '65, and I ran across your wonderful Feedback while looking up my grandfather's old bar, The Irish Den. He was Jack O'Brien, who later owned O'Brien's Screens and Glass. It was so nice to see the names in print on your website--validating for me as I was very young. I had hoped to go to HHS as a child, but we moved, however, I have a fond childhhod memory of carrying the Homecoming Queen's robe at a football game in about 1964 or 65. :)

Message: More Brian Wilson news! Beach Boy Brian Wilson to finish Gershwin songs In a surprise union of two quintessentially American composers from different eras - one the 1960s mastermind of "Good Vibrations," the other the Jazz Age creator of "Rhapsody in Blue" - former Beach Boy Brian Wilson has been authorized by the estate of George Gershwin to complete unfinished songs Gershwin left behind when he died in 1937. He plans to finish and record at least two such pieces on an album of Gershwin music he hopes to release next year. The Gershwin-Wilson project may strike some people as an odd coupling: One was a New York musician famous for sophisticated 1920s and '30s pop songs including "'S Wonderful" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" as well as such expansive, classically minded compositions as "Rhapsody," and the other is the driving force behind southern California beach culture hits such as "Surfin' USA," "I Get Around" and "California Girls." But their career paths and evolution of their artistry have common threads, noted people involved with the project, and that gives the proposed collaboration logic. Todd Gershwin, George's great nephew and a trustee of the George Gershwin family trusts, said: "George for his time was a visionary. He certainly crossed genres and musical lines, tried things that hadn't been done before, and Brian Wilson has done exactly the same thing. "Wilson, 67, said he is "thrilled to death." "I'm proud to be able to do it," he said in an interview. "Hopefully I'll be able to do them justice." Todd Gershwin said a collection of several dozen song fragments, ranging from "a few bars to some almost-finished songs and everything in between" had been sitting virtually untouched for more than seven decades. He and other trustees began reaching out in the last year or two to find contemporary artists who might be interested in completing those musical bits and pieces. Wilson, who says "Rhapsody in Blue" is his earliest musical memory, said the pieces he's working with are very likely to remain as instrumentals, and that they easily could wind up as three-minute pop songs. But he's also holding open the possibility of expanding them to more substantive pieces. The Gershwin project grew out of a proposal to Wilson from Walt Disney Records for a two-album contract.

Message: I'm writing to answer a question I found on a way earlier feedback page. As a teacher at Washington Elem and Hawthorne Intermediate, and then as assistant principal at Hawthorne Intermediate (1956-1959), I was not, am not, related to George Newton. I remember the name but not the person. This is not to negate the notion that all we Newtons are tied together somehow, somewhere, sometime.
