Message: John Boy; Forgot to add, when we were not working, we wore the Urban Cowboy stuff, western tight Wrangler jeans, western shirts & usually western Ruffy boots, however, Ostrich, Water Snake skin, shark skin, Aligator and regular leather were in the closet also. Surprisingly enough, western boots are very comfortable if you get them with a walking heel on them. Then, you had to have a pouch of Red Man chewing tobacco in your back pants pocket. Some guys did 7 I guess still do, dip snuff laced W/Jack Daniels or Yukon Jack, I never could do that I guess I was a wus LOL. Jorge

Message: Hey, John Boy; I see that we're still on clothes & shoes, let's see now, I coverd 5,6,7, & 8th grades. In High School everything kinda changed again. Kept the Pendleton shirts, added Penneys towncraft "T" shirt and went to white levi's pants, got rid of the Khaki's. Converse tennis shoes & white socks took the place of the french toed shoes. John Boy, I think I've asked you this before. Do you remember a Men's store called "Allen's men's store" it was on the W/side of Hawthorne Bl. up towards Imperial Hwy, in what was then I believe a Safeway store shopping area, near the Merry-go-round place. Allen was a really sharp guy and a good salesman, you would go to his store and he would tell you how to dress and set you up, naturally, for a price. Oh Yeah, I was working & living at home, so had money for clothes. Anyway, Allen got me into Florsheim shoes, Wing tips, Ankle boots etc.. you would go into his store and the first thing he would say, "good that your here, I been saving something for you in the back". He would go in the back and bring out the latest Sir Guy shirts, Pendeltons shirts, coordinated slacks and so on. I just threw out a pair of old Florsheim shoes about a year ago or so, they are like a Volkswagen, you can't kill them, the tops lasted forever, I think I had them resoled a couple of times. End of the clothes story, a few years later when I smartened up, I started wearing tan shirts W/L.A. Sheriff's patches, kept the T" shirt & Wool military green pants W/black Viet nam jungle boots highly polished. Wore this outfit for 30 years (for work) until I retired in 2000. Now, I wear what you described in your post, Shorts, "T" shirt & Nike tennis shoes, pretty much every day. Hey, John this is kinda fun remembering old H/S Cr-p that does not really mean anything except it gives you something to do on a slow day in Long Beach, have a good one. Jorge

Message: I just caught up on a few pages of Feedback I missed. I wish I had that '56 Bug in the picture. I mentioned before that I towed my '69 Bug up to Oregon and gave it to my Grand-daughter for her 16th birthday. A few days after we left, my daughter drove it down to the grocery store and was offered $6,000 for it, on the spot. She said she thought about it for a minute but told the guy that it was a tempting offer, but her Dad would kill her if she sold it.

Message: To George, I had a small precancerous lesion removed from the top of my ear a few years ago. When I told the Dermo about my "sun" history (surfing, snow skiing, boating, waterskiing, 20 years working on the water out here in the desert) he prescribed a gel called Efudex, which would have given the same results as you describe. After a week he was amazed that I had no reaction, and doubled the application for another week. Again, nothing but dried out skin. He attributed my lack of reaction to my Italian heritage. (Sorry, Ed, but I can't help you with your project, no habla Italiano) If I understand the medication, it actually destroys the basil cells, which is the red reaction. Sometimes that's all that's needed. In any event, make sure you consult with the Dermo about the reaction and see him at least 2 or 3 times a year for a full body examination. That stuff can crop up pretty much anywhere, even in areas not regularly exposed to sun.

Message: Hey Paco, "Beatle Boots!!" WOW! I had a pair in '67 also. I was the lead singer in a band called the Civilized Movement, and those boots were part of my "get up." Blue double breasted suit coat, white pants, shirt and tie...we dressed sharp, but not exactly alike as the Monte and Crystals did. And from the 8th grade thru the 12th, the shoes to wear were wingtips, any color...for the casual look...it was desert boots. Only wore the Beatle Boots on stage...my dad hated them...that automatically made them "COOL!"

Message: Hey John; What you describe as wearing when you were a kid is what I wear now in retirement with shorts, Except, they don't make "Prima Prince" Penney Towncraft "T" shirts anymore. Darn, they were the only "T" shirts that kept a collar and did not sag around the neck, or maybe that was just my neck sagging LOL. AHHH, the good old days, they don't even make "T" shirts the way they used to, nuff about clothes.Jorge

Message: The talk of the skin cancers brings up my own episode back about 10 or 12 years ago. Being a redhead ( back then ) I'd had some severe sun damage from our beloved 26th street. Started seeing a dermatologist about 30 years ago, which probably could have saved my life. I had a small blemish on my nose come and go over a period of about 4 weeks. Make a long story short, it turned out to be a squamis cell cancer. My doc told me if I had waited too long I could have lost half my face or possibly death instead of just a large hollowed spot on the end of it. Moral is don't wait you guys. If you suspect something, take care of it NOW! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude

Message:Hey, Paco Boy, Maaaan, you just kicked in a forgotten memory bank of brain cells. Yeah, I think in the growing up stages as I remember, at Ramona Grade School in Hawthorne, 5th & 6th grade, the fad was brite neon and I mean neon colored "T" shirts that were form fitting. I think they advertised them as Muscle Shirts, they were very uncomfortable & tight up under the arm pit, but that was not all. We also wore what they called peggers (pants) back then, that were color coordinated with the Muscle shirts, turquoise blue, light neon green, light yellow etc.. There was also had half inch neon suede belts that again coordinated with our pants & Muscle shirts. I'm sure it was quite a sight, now a days, if you wore this outfit in West Hollywood, now one would think you looked odd at all LOL. This outfit was finished off with highly polished, spit shined "French toed shoes. Do any of you old timers remember these shirts & pants?, I bought mine at Chaney's on Hawthorne Blvd. Then, at Hawthorne Intermediate Jr. H/S 7th & 8th grades, the dress code among the kids changed again. I had expensive virgin wool Pendleton shirts and even a Pendleton Smoking Jacket, I wish I had today, even though I don't smoke, it was very comfortable. I also wore Friscoed Khaki pants split one inch up the side at the cuff and no more, this outfit was again capped off with highly polished French toed shoes. Yeah, we thought we were pretty cool in those days, what happened LOL. Anyhow, Paco, ya got me, thanks for bringing back something I had forgotten about and rattling the old Brain Stem. OH, Ron Reinholdson, thank very much for the feedback about the cancer skin cell treatment, You took some of the edge off. I did not have it as bad as you describe, however, it was very intense. I finished my last treatment last night and go see the Dermatologist today. I can't believe that only yourself and one other person knew what I was talking about. Thanks again for the response.

Message: okay I had a Couger sighting Sat @ Cruising for a Cure carshow. I was sitting with my friend when this guy walked up and began asking her questions about the car. While telling us his story he brought up Hawthorne Blvd and the Beach Boys quite a bit. So I asked him if went to Hawthorne High and he said yes graduated I think 64? I forgot his first name but his last name was Hawkins :) I told Bob about him but he didn't recognize the name. So unlike my husband, this qualifies as a sighting right?

Message: About 8 years ago I had the same treatment George had. The treatment period--two weeks--wasn't nearly as bad--sorry, George--as the recovery period. My entire face peeled off. Just touching anything to my face was excruciating. I had to shower with a plastic bag over my head. Really. I had to let my beard grow, as there was no way I could shave. I had to take two weeks off work, because I couldn't concentrate on anything. Finally, after about a month I was able to function normally, but I had to do all my outdoor stuff at night, and hang around the shadows all day. Even on a cool day, if sunlight touched my face it hurt. During this time I had to renew my driver's license. People don't believe me when I tell them my face really was the the color it is in my driver's license picture. The good outcomes were that all of the precancerous lesions were gone, and my face was soft, smooth and wrinkle free. Can you say Baby's Butt? On a lighter note, my niece's husband had the same treatment a year or so later, and his wasn't nearly as bad.

Message: Hey, John Boy; I got a question on a serious note, it's Coug. related, for the fact we all grew up in the sun belt and had many hours at the beach, way before sun block was invented. Has anybody, I'm sure there are, ever been to a dermatologist and had them check you out. I did a few weeks ago, never been to one before. This doctor said I had a lot of sun damage and he wanted me to do a pre-cancer cell test for him. Reluctantly, I said ok. He gave me a prescription for something stuff called "CARAC". It's very expensive, two (2) small 30 GM tubes cost $284.00 out of pocket, unk. if insurance will cover any of the expense. Anyway, you lightly put this stuff on your face, arms & hands for two weeks. Well, for the first 3 or 4 days, nothing was happening, I had my wife look at my face every morning, she said, maybe you're lucky and don't have any damaged cells. Well, guess what, on the 5th day, my face looked like I got sprayed with red paint I'm almost done now and go back to this dermatologist on Tuesday and my face is a lot better. Just have a few blotches, nothing showed on my arms and hands at all, just my face. My question is to anyone who has been through this procedure, I'm just a little curious as to what this doctor will do next. I'm sure it will be interesting. Toward the end, your face feels like it's recovering from a bad sun burn, dry and flakey like a face peel. Oh, Yeah, you don't go outside much when this "CARAC" stuff kicks in because you get a lot of stares LOL & you can't be in the sun anyway, per the doctor. If anybody has done this thing and can help answer my question, I would appreciate what to expect and what you have to say next my email is gjanaj@aol.com. If you spent a lot of time in the sun as I did & have, it might be a good time to go see a dermatologist and get checked out. Thanks
