Message: Picnic; did I hear someone mention Picnic? You better believe Brother Billy and I will be there. We never miss a picnic especially when the Bierman Girls, Sharon Leach, Jan and Judy and many others that we love to be with will be there. It is so easy to get to, just two miles off the San Diego Freeway (I feel a commercial jingle coming on) in El Segundo. Parking is great and not too far to walk and the best part is the weather is always wonderful and cool. I have put in a special request for Wonderful Wayne and his Wailing Accordion to perform during the festivities (don?t say a word John). Hopefully Paco will wear his RED shoes to the event. I hope anyone within a two hour driving distance will consider coming down for the event. There is always someone new to meet and I can guarantee that you will at least know one person there. Saturday October 10th!
Thanks Bob, I was wondering if anyone was going to mention the Cougartown Picnic. I'll be there too.

Message: I spent most of the dark and rainy morning, today, in the garage, digging thru some old boxes and thumbing thru my El Molinos. Disclaimer: Hey, I sincerely apologize to ANYONE I might have written something really dumb in your yearbook. I have NO excuse! God bless the REAL Cougartown
Hey Danny, Yes a few Cougs are probably not too proud of things written but hey, just chalk it up to youthful stupidity

Message: Cougar sighting: Met Stacy Reno('93) at a Ralphs grocery store in Lomita where she works. It did my heart good that someone from '93 knew some of the teachers I knew, namely Kye Courtney, Neil Minami, and Cathy Adkins. Cougar sightings seem to be my destiny, I seem to attract them like flys!
Hey Clark, Thanks and yes you are a Premier Cougar Attractor

Message: Bob, John and Dori, Rooflines not withstanding, the real question when discussing Buicks is the number of portholes on the hood. Was Jensen's Buick a three-holer or a four-holer??
Zero portholes on the HOOD. I think all but the Special had 4 portholes on the fender

Message: That 59 VW bug is the same color as the 58 I bought in 68 at Marina VW where I worked. Paid around $250. Converted it into a hippie mobile by painting the dash to give it that special psychodelic look. Loved that car but had to remember not to downshift into first until I was at a complete stop (grrrind). And the 36 hp motor was slow going up hills. Of course hippie cars were supposed to go slow.

Message: Hey Sue, don?t make me any older than I already am. I was 3 in that photo. Notice all of the modes of transportation in the photo - my peddle car and tricycle. And John, you need to get on line and look up ?rooflines? as that is definitely a 55. 54 did have the same roof and body but 53 was much different. And everyone asks me why my nickname is ?Car Guy?.
Hey Bob, just a joke. Note the happy face.

and the roofline on that Buick looks more like a 53 or 54

Message: As a non-football player but HHS fan, the one play that stands out in my mind was when you guys were playing Inglewood on their turf. Their running back was steam-rolling down the side lines for a TD, when one HHS player appeared out of "no where" and made the tackle. He had been on the side lines, out of the game at that moment, and entered the game to make the TD saving tackle. I know who it was. Anyone else remember?

Message: Man I remember we would always change the plays in the huddle cause we just didn't like the call Plum made. I also remember being the guy who brought in the plays sometimes and by the time I got to the huddle I had either forgot the play or the formation and I would mix them up and you cold hear the coaches yelling from the sidelines then having to call a timeout. We had Danny Rael and Kurt Morlock to run the ball so we called what we thought would be good for one of them.

Message: The kid in the photo is me. This is a new 1956 VW in 56. It was called red but was more orange than anything. My dad had gotten involved with a German guy who started importing VW's in the 50's. This is one of many that he would bring home. My parents and their employees would get in one car (the 55 Buick in the background) and drive to the port in San Pedro and then each would drive back a VW. My mom always hated driving them as she would start out in 2nd gear, then shift to 3rd. She never liked stick shift. And don't even mention a hill and a stick shift to her!
Thanks Bob, great early picture.

Message: Hey, John, I LOVE YOU MAAANNN and that Wade Greasby too, and I find the fact that he recalls that the 86 dive turned into 46 veer on occasion positively charming. But I'm beginning to wonder if this kind of inculcated secret wisdom didn't displace the room for Latin he was also taking at the time. I have much fresher memories from that same year how fero, ferre, turned into tuli, latus, and they did it every time, not just on occasion. John, Greasby took his penchant for rearranging football plays to suit a game situation very seriously and sometimes he would try to call an audible in Latin class too, especially in the third declension with an I-stem. I assure you that when he did Ray Garza could be every bit as cutting as Coach Otto, but in a very different manner--you didn't know you were being cut for sometimes up to a whole year. Then it would hit you and you even felt privileged to have been smacked by his rapacious wit.
So are you saying Mr. Garza and Coach Plum used the same playbook?

Message: OK Big Man it is I and not E who Improvised!! Yes our line was one who could open up holes and drive DB's into the turf on sweeps and flys...Without the line who knows what would have happen to the yardage attained by Skulick, Howse, et al. A great group of guys, who all weighed around 220. Big for the day!!Jimbo Husker, During my senior season, 1972-3, number 23 was worn by Ken McCalister. Though some of us had heard of Tim Thomas, we didn't know his number had been retired. This was only 4 years following "23's" retirement. I hope to be there in November as should all former Cougar players and alumni. Hot day today. Surf report Surf City, water 72, air 88, waves 3-4'

Message: OHHH how Otto (er...excuse me, Coach Plum) would get agitated whenever the QB "improvised" in the huddle. Even when it worked for a huge gain or TD. Favorite play was the 10 fly ...got to be the 225 lb pulling tackle taking down the d-back corner with Howse on my tail running the ball. Fastest Canuck I ever met.

Message: Gary, We emprovised allot, the 86 dive turned into 46 veer, where I could read the tackle/end then give to dive back, pitch to half or keep it. 85 turned into 45, same results. Then the wing back would come around and we reversed direction going back side. Change the formation from split backs to I formation and run blasts and powers. Sometimes, OK, allot of times, plays would be sent in and knowing the situation, would get changed in the huddle. I learned quite a bit of the QB position, calling plays, footwork, and reading defenses from Dave Chauncey and rides home from Coach Chauncey. Audibles worked too!! Watching todays game, the QB's are programed by the coach and don't have a "feel" for the game like we did. We'll have to get together for lunch and discuss this further.

Message: Tim Thomas graduated in 1965 and was an all CIF defensive back. A great athlete and a better person. Timmy laid down his life for his country in 1968 while serving in Vietnam. The coach retires his jersey at a packed memorial center tribute to Tim shortly after the news of his death. I asked Principal Newell's predecessor why Tim Thomas jersey #23 was being worn a few years ago and she peomised to look into it. I heard nothing. I sent Mr. Newell an email 2 days ago and received this response. I spoke with the coach and #23 is retired. There is a special locker dedicated to Tim in the Athletic Locker Room. We can arrange a ceremony before homecoming in November, but I?d like you to head that ceremony. Mark Newell, Principal Hawthorne High School Personally I don't think we need another ceremony but that is not my call. I am putting this out to all of you Cougars who knew Tim and may want to participate in such a ceremony. The locker and getting his jersey retired again are great. The Coach had a great tribute to Tim in 1968. So please email me with your thoughts and suggestions. I have asked for a picture of the locker and Princioal Newell has graceously told me he shall have one sent to me. We'll get it posted here and hopefully Paco's pics too.
Sounds great Jim. Thanks for sticking up for Tim's Jersey as I'm sure these things get lost over time, staff changes, etc. I'll be there and see you in November.

Message: Just got home after spending the summer in NW Wisconsin. Spent the last few days in Hot Springs Arkansas visiting my youngest son. Have three beautiful grand children there, two of them in high school. Tried to stress to them just how high school has such an effect on their lives and the memories they will incur afterwards. This website is a perfect example of those memories that all of us alumni have experienced. I too, Marilyn still have my typing pin, imagine a lone boy in a typing class typing 60 words a minute and being singled out in the awards presentations. I slumped down in my seat then but I feel pretty good about it now. Good to be back on best regards to all you Cougars.
Hey Loren, Great to have you back and thanks for the story.

Message: GREAT IDEA! How 'bout we all meet up at the tree lot on a Saturday afternoon and buy trees. Those who wish to donate it to a family can do so, those who wish to take it home and adorn it may also do so... then we can all go to the Stick and Stein for cocktails and nosh and a gabfest! Wouldn't that be a blast to have a cadre of Cougars show up to support the youth of our Alma Mater.
Uhhhh....I haven't received, and therefore added to the feedback page, the Christmas tree info yet but we could go drink if you want
