Message: JB1: Buying trees, is it already time to buy Christmas Trees? Did I sleep through the 'Lost Italian Day', Halloween, Veteren's Day, and Thanksgiving again? Or is it just the 'Tree Huggers' are at it again? Luv ya Susan and Sharon !
Buy it now, pick it up later.

Message: Gary, No worries on the email address. Isn't Cougartown a place where we all can converse? Our Head Coach in '70 was Jim Bunyard. Then in '71 and '72 it was Otto Plum. How is life on the Hill? Do you remember a girl who lived on 130th Street between Jefferson and Washington, north side of the street. She had a brother, both went to HHS and graduated early/mid sixties? Her name, Leanne, maybe?

Message: OR.........you COULD buy a tree and arrange to have it donated to a family in Hawthorne who cannot afford one....I'll bet the school counselors could identify some families who would qualify. What the heck, it's the season of giving....the tree sales (and subsequent delivery) would be a great exercise in commerce and in charity for the kids who will be working the sale. It will be the season of giving and what better way to make the world a better place. In any case, whatever way you choose to contribute, it is a worthy, worthy cause.
Another good idea...

Message: GO SNOW IN COLORADO!!! That translates to water in Lake Mead next summer! YAY! Thanks Kirk, great news for ME!!! *** As for the Christmas Tree sales - please know that even if you can't buy a tree, don't put up a tree, are afraid of trees, are allergic to trees, think that poems ARE lovelier than trees ... you can STILL help the HHS Athletic program by sending a check to the school, attn Principal Newell, marked for the Athletic Program, and be a part of the magic and memories that is (are?) high school athletics! PLEASE consider a gift, no matter the size; it's tax deductible and a fine way of paying your respects to fond memories. The kids need your help, so skip a couple of mocha choka latte yayas and send the proceeds to the HHS athletic fund!
I agree Sharon, our Athletic program is way under-funded because of the state of the State. Cougars, please consider donating to our school. You can help make a difference.

Message: VW's and jewelry stores...we had 3 bugs at one time. My dad, sister and brother drove'em. My dad drove nothing but a VW until the day he died. It was orange, but he called it "tangerine". As for jewelry stores...we only shopped at Selwyn's next to the Fox in Inglewood. He was a friend of the family. The shop is still there and still called Selwyn's, but has new owners that have been there for along time now. Great memories of the "bugs" and the jewelry store.

Message: I think that anyone who has ever owned a VW remembers it fondly. I had an older model (had the oval/round back window). It was silver, had the semaphore turn signals, and had a gas gauge. It came with a book showing how to do most repairs and had a faulty starter that often required someone to take a stout flashlight and give the starter a good thump. A great little car that I will always remember!

Message: OK Dean, There were two running backs for West that year one was named Smith and the other was named Anderson. As to Howse and Skulick, HHS's pair of running backs class of '73, both had over 1000 yards rushing their senior year. Tom Deuel and Ken McCalister, wing backs and myself had close to 1500 yards rushing that season. I was able to throw an average 10 passes a game for 1100+ yards. We also had Chris Shaner, Bob Hinders, and some others who also rushed for yardage. All total the team had close to 4500 yards total offense in 11 games. Stats were provided by the Daily Breeze clippings. West High running backs were provided by a West high alum. One last thing I have my tassel and my wife's hanging with our college tassels, BA's and MA's and our oldest son's tassel class of 2009. Seven in all. Have a great day Coug's

Message: Ahh...the tassel that proudly hung from our graduation caps. Unfortunately, I did not have mine for very long. I hung my tassel from my rear-view mirror in my 64 Chevy Impala. Literally 30 days after my first semester fall classes had begun at El Camino College I was walking out to the parking structure to get in my car and go home. Only problem...there was no car. A week later the Sheriff's Dept. found it completely stripped somewhere in Carson. Of course they took the rear-view mirror too along with my high school tassel. Insurance replaced the car but the tassel could never be replaced. Congrats to those of you who still have yours!

Message: Hello Alumni, As the current Principal of Hawthorne High School I want to offer a huge thank you to the Classes of 79/80 for their wonderful, $1,500.00, donation to our athletic program. This money will be used accordingly. Truthfully, all of you have been fantastic in your support of Cougar Pride. Due to your alumni efforts we raised over $25,000.00 last year for athletics. Through John Baker and his hard work our school feels a rekindled connection with its graduates. Soon you will be seeing a message from him regarding our effors this year. Instead of just asking for donations, we're going to pre-sell Christmas Trees. it will be a "funraiser", but almost everyone wants a tree, right?? John will be laying the specifics out to you soon as this pre-sale will begin in October. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL HAWTHORNE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI. GO COUGARS!!!! Mark
Hi Mark, I know I, and all our Alumni are very happy to pitch in, in any way we can for good ol' Hawthorne High. The Christmas Tree thing is a fun way to participate as we all need a Christmas tree and might as well help out the Athletic program. To all who want a tree through this program, I'll add the specifics to this page shortly, so be looking for them, here. Also a big THANK YOU to the classes of 79 and 80 for your generosity in helping out our program.

Message: The brief discussion about VW's actually brings back a pretty recent memory for me. About 6 years ago, on a lark, I purchased a 1978 VW van on ebay. It was a 6 cylinder european version that had been modified with twin carbs in lieu of the original fuel injection. I had to pick it up in Reno NV in January and drive it home. I left Reno around 6:00 pm and was driving past Tahoe when I realized that there was a freezing draft coming up from the floor. I could see the road under the brake pedal. COLD! It's funny that my kids wouldn't go anywhere with me in our BMW but if I was going somewhere in the V-dub, they'd go. Anytime I saw a fellow "bus" driver, they always smiled and waved. We were at the intersection of Rosecrans and Sepulveda and an Aston Martin convertable pulled up next to us and the 2 kids in the back seat were yelling at their dad saying that our car was the coolest car they'd ever seen. It was two-tone yellow and white and we called it our "twinkie". I couldn't bear the thought of driving it cross country so we gave it to one of my daughter's friends. It was a FUN car and now I wish we'd kept it although it would be a "seasonal" drive in New Hampshire.

And speaking of VW's, (Donna Urbach post), one day I was with my dad in the car going from our house on 119th St & Isis to Redondo Beach and started counting VW's. I had a count of just over 300 bugs & buses via Aviation Bl to PCH. They just don't make em like that anymore!

Message: The talk about Inglewood jewelry stores brought back a memory ...In 1961, I gave Sharon an engagement ring from Leroy's in Inglewood, that set me back $39.95. We've since had her setting and my ring melted down to her gold band and original baby diamond. My grandfather drove us there, and made me get down on my knee and ask her to marry me..We both remember a cedar box that was given free from a Hawthorne jewelry store..Geez I remember that but can't find my socks..Fight On!!
$39.95 huh. I think Joyce and I paid about that for both our wedding bands. Nowadays it costs $5000 for a ring to just get engaged. I think I'll stay single

Didn't RYAN'S on Hawthorne Blvd. do the same or something like it? And I still have my High School Diploma... And living in Vegas where only 60% of the kids Graduate and recieve a Diploma, I appreciate the significance of my Diploma, which is a honor and a privilege more then I did in 1971.
Hi Michael, It could have been any of a number of Jewelry stores in the area, depending on which year you graduated. Jerry called me today and thought it was LeRoys Jewelers. I'm not sure.
