Message: Hey Tim (Jack Dicus): We were rogue students, Tim. We were forced to operate outside what was acceptable, the norm, and conformity. You, Bob (Risner), Rick (Thomas) and I as soccer enthusiast were rejected by the entire Hawthorne School administration. Not just the coaching staff, but the school principle Mr. Wetzler. We had two meetings with him. At the first meeting he told the four of us that in order to have a team we needed a coach, a filed to play and practice on, uniforms, transportation to and from games, insurance and a teacher to sponsor the team. Between the four of us we came up with a coach Mr. Bob Haugh, I think Bob or you found him based on a news article about him playing in England?s Soccer World Cup and his desire to coach a local team in the U.S (Hawthorne to be more exact). Our parents offered to drive us (transportation) to and from games, and did. Our parents offered to pay the insurance, but Coach Haugh eventually got sponsors to foot the bill for insurance and uniforms. Bob Risner was working for the local parks and recreation department and arranged for the fields and soccer balls. Mr. Frank Graves, my wood shop teacher, agreed to be our teacher sponsor. Two weeks following the first meeting with Mr. Wetzler, at our second meeting we told him what we had done and accomplished and he proceeded to say and I quote plus or minus forty years of memory ?you do not understand there will be no team.? We walked out and said screw him more my words than yours. We did create a soccer club which was our only tie at that stage to Hawthorne High. Tim, Mr. Hough called all over the Los Angeles area to locate teams willing to compete against the South Bay Wolverines since we incorporated multiple local high schools. There was no CIF; we were never a part of the federation. What we were was a conglomerate of diverse young men bent on achieving our goal and leading the way. That is what made you, Bob, and me great US Army Officers. That is what drove both you and Bob to risk your lives for others multiple times in Viet Nam, thank you by the way. You and Bob were (are) the best of the best. Even Rick Thomas gained from the experience by not quitting after the first failed game. As I said the other day in my email to you, I am grateful to have been a part of that great soccer adventure. It warms my soul to have been a part of something that powerful and good. The only thing that might have put whip cream on our diverse team would have been to have some girls on our team too. A friend of ours daughter recently won a college scholarship to play soccer. I am also grateful that Hernan Umaņa came up with the electronic version of the team picture. Your friend, Bruce MAJORBS

Message: I did understand Jean, as the Sylmar quake of '71 rocked the house we rented off the foundation, and the house got redtagged/demolished. 4707 129th street, an old 2 1/2 story on the back of a tripple wide lot, with a old large (very large) pepper tree in the front year (which was decorated often with TP). I know what Jean meant by going back, because when I received a head injury in '74 and came up missing from the hospital, that is where I was found.(yea John, I know the head injury explains a lot!)

Message: About the 1000 Orchard address...All I was trying to do here was share a memory of a house that I thought was long gone....and that it still exist. Maybe it doesn't mean much to any one else...but I just wanted to share it....I thought it was a sort of Hawthorne memory...that there are still lots of old houses still around. I think that's kind of neat. No big story....just a memory...like our old trees.....we all shared. I loved them all.

Message: After doing a search on the address 1000 Orchard Dr (This is really close to where Hawthorne Blvd and La Brea met, and about 1 block East of it.) My mother, Juanita Hahlbeck, grew up in that house. Her brother Herman (Buster Hahlbeck)lived there with his wife and my 2 cousins Richard and Susan. I was surprised to see that the house was still there! I thought that it would have been demolished by now. The house was built in 1925. I can remember going over there many many times. The picture of the house brought back some memories.

The house wasn't shaking, it was rocking like a boat in the ocean, and I thought "OMG! It has happened and now I'm in the water, house and all! I sure am glad I took those scuba diving lessons. I'm gonna need my fins to get back to the mainland!" Once a blond, always a blond.

Message: My daughter just took me on a cruise for my 88th birthday. We boarded in San Diego and sailed to Vancouver BC. It was so much fun. But what I want to tell you is the last night as we sailed past Victoria the stage show for the night was a 90 minute performance by six talented young men who sang all the Beach Boys songs. Now that was a great birthday gift. But wait-- there is more. We went to dinner and were seated at a table with two other couples. My daughter was talking with the man next to her and started laughing and said-- Dad - this is one of your students from HHS. I was ROBERT MONTENEGRO class of 82. He was a bit shy until the wine bottles were empty and then we had a great time talking about the good old days. Robert is a detective for the Glendale police and I hope will come to our next cruise night. Once again I was thrilled to remember all my great memories of the happy days spent with you. I love you guys so much.

Message: In the 1967 book by Curt Gentry, "Last Days of the Late, Great State of California." He describes in loving detail how a massive earthquake severs the coastal regions of the state west of the San Andreas Fault, which then sink below the ocean. I see Hawthorne had a 2.7 aftershock at 7:43pm yesterday, who'll knows if the book will come true?

For anyone who hasn't read it, "The Last Days of the Late, Great State of California" by Curt Gentry might be an interesting read and could be why so many decided to leave California for other places. I remember someone telling me that if you are in a car during a mild tremor you do not notice it as much because of the suspension of the vehicle.

Does anyone remember way back in the late 60's, when everyone thought So.Cal was going to fall off in the ocean, they even sang songs about it and headed for the high grounds of the North-West or was that just a reason for the Hippies to leave Southern Cal.

Message: I was in bed during the 1971 Sylmar quake. I just stayed there. It didn't seem that bad to me. On the other hand, I was living in North Hills during the Northridge Quake in 1994 and that was a violent shaker! I tried to get out of bed to get my daughter from her room to go into my apartment's hallway, but the bed was jumping like Linda Blair's in "The Exorcist" so I couldn't get out. Finally, when the shaking stopped, we went outside to the parking lot and it was pitch dark out with millions of stars in the sky. Then the first aftershock hit. I never felt a quake outside before and the apartment building was moving.
