Message: OH MY ! My poor little Cougars! Yes most earthquakes will shake you up !(No pun intended) .. I truly understand ! But NO ONE has mentioned the the Northridge Quake ! ...We live in the hills above Chatsworth and you talk about hearing that thing coming ! Where we live it's all rock. So the sound carries very well ! Next thing ya know ...My fireplace imploded. And when i ran in front of it ( no power, no lights ) I fell on all the brick, stone ,and rebar! And as laid their wondering .... WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED TO ME ? ....I found myself looking at the stars ! The fire place fell on the roof and made a huge new skylight ! And the view from our home looks over SFV . So try to imagine what SFV looks like at 4:30 in the morn, without power ! And all you see is a fire here and their and hearing people nearby crying and fire trucks responding to calls .... I had to leave my house alone with my wife and off to work i went .It was my first shift as a fire captain ! I was gone for three days straight !And when i came home my wife had all the rubble removed and a check in her hand from fema ! Firefighters wives are the BEST ! Enjoy your ......"GOOD VIBRATIONS" ! ...... Aloha and Mahalo !

Message: I was in my kitchen getting ready for an early art class at El Camino when the Sylmar quake happened. The telephone poles were bending and swaying like they were made out of rubber. A real roller.

Message: Ok...I'm back one more time! I read your feed back John where you mentioned having your ear to carpet and heard the quake before it hit. When I was young....I was at Laura Maxsons. She went into the house for a minute. I waited in the back yard. I was totally bored so I lay down on the grass. For some reason I put my ear to the ground. I also had the experience of hearing a quake before it was felt! Yeah you were right John....Very eerie!!!
No big deal, Jean, just another CA quake

Message: Wow! I just heard that there was another quake in L.A. This one being near El Segundo. Hope everyone is ok. I remember the Sylmar quake of 71. My (then) husband was in Texas, in the Army....I was at home with my small son Neil and pregnant with Eric. I remember hiding under the covers...hoping it would end...it seemed like forever...Then I heard Neils crib roll so I ran to his crib and got him out of it. Later that evening I was watching Johnny Carson.....I felt an after shock....Seconds later Johnny Carson felt it on his show and made some jokes about it. Nothing fell in my apartment, but I could hear all sorts of glass breaking in the upstairs apartment. It was very scary!
I forgot to mention the 1967 Soccer picture.....I recognized 2 people in there. Hernan Umana who was a good friend of my ex Floyd MacErnie. Rick Thomas who was in an art class with me...I think it was arts and crafts with Ms Pinchot or another woman who was younger, and I can not remember her name. I remember that Rick was a very nice guy. Hope things "settle" down out there in Cougartown turf. I do not miss those quakes!!!! In NM everyone gets really freaked out when they feel the smallest of tremors...When I tell them how CA quakes are their mouths drop! I tell them to picture yourself sitting on top of a bowl of jello and then someone shakes it....

Yes, I was in Hawthorne when it happened. Was at Bob Fraser's house on the floor, moving some stuff from under a table, my ear to the carpet and actually heard it before the shaking began. Very eerie.

Message: It must have been a sixties thing to sleep through the Sylmar earthquake because I did so myself. I was living in an apartment complex in Inglewood at the time. The shaking was bad enough to wake me and I noticed the accordion type closet doors opening and closing a few times. I just thought to myself it was another California earthquake and much too early so I rolled over to quickly go back to sleep. It wasn?t until later when I got up and found half the water in the pool missing that I realized how powerful it had been. My dad was just a small lad during the Long Beach earthquake. From his accounts that was a real shaker. It was on the same Inglewood/Newport fault as the latest tremor.

Message: Yep! The Slymar Quake was the baddest quake I've been in. The den in our house was-a-rocken and'a rollen. We were running around the den picking up all the flopping fish that got bounced out of the aguarium. But of coarse my brother Paul (Butch class of 69) slept through the whole thing, while I was hollering Earthquake...Earthquake.

Message: There was a mention below of the '71 Sylmar / Northridge earthquake. At the time, I was in my dorm @ Cal State Northridge. I awoke during the shaking to find my bed "gliding" across the room to the opposite side. The ceiling looked like a giant spider web as a result of the cracking. I was on the 2nd floor of a 3-story building. I had a vision of becoming sandwiched in rubble because I KNEW that dorm building was about to collapse. It didn't, but just about everything on every shelf tumbled to the floor. At baseball practice a day or two later, as I was running wind-sprints on the adjacent football field, I was knocked off my feet by an aftershock. The football field's out-of-bounds line looked like a whip that had been snapped - or a series of elongated S's. Now, THAT was a quake! - Gibby -
Yes it was, the baddest quake I've been through.

I read your blurb about Debbie Lee's mom. What happened? I was good friends with Debbie after high school. we used to hang out at a club in Marina Del Rey called The Attic. Every friday night we would go eat dinner at Jolly Roger in El Segundo, always the same thing, teriyaki hamburgers with pineapple. Yummo. I lost touch with her after I moved to the OC."Lanis email is Lanita720@aol.com

And thanks to Hernan (lower left in pic) for reminding me of this, or I would have forgotten altogether!

Message: What was the name of the dairy across from the school I think on the corner of Broadway and Inglewood Ave? I used to go there when not at Taco Bell for fudgesicles.I worked at Anita Shop (Broadway and Hawthorne Blvd) from 1970-1973. Sharon Murphy Shambaugh...do you remember the older lady that always wanted to sell the most? I remember the manager's name was Mr Gold. Did he have a first name? I have been in Sales now for over 30 years! Great training ground at Anitas!
The dairy I do remember but not the name. I'm sure someone will remember that one.

Message: We had quite a shaker tonight. As far as I can tell, it was centered near 108th and Yukon near Morningside High. We heard it, then felt two sharp jolts. A few things fell off of shelves, all seems OK. A neighbor's plywood looks bowed on the outside of their house. Some damage has been reported on the news in Lynwood/South Gate/Long Beach. Hope everyone is prepared just in case no matter where you live now.
