Message: Funny, looking lately at Hawthorne and remembering how it used to look back in the late 60's early 70's. A group of us from 129th street used to go to the church near where White's Bakery used to be, around the bend from good ole Andy's Taco Tio. All of those years playing basketball at the enclosed lit basketball court till it was lights out. Ah, those were the seminal days. Now, nearly nothing of those days still exists on Hawthorne, nearly a repleat facial. I often wish those from 129th street would ring in or at least allow themselves to be found, no such luck. Last week, suffering a micro heart attack suddenly makes me feel old, but just a bit!
Hi Ed, Actually there are still remnants of our Hawthorne up and down the boulevard. You just have to look past the new businesses.

Hey Dale, small strokes for small brains.....thank GOD you're not an Einstein!! Glad too, it hasn't affected your sense of humor. That would have been the big loss. Get well dude, and check back with updates.

Message: Hi to everyone! I had not kept up with the site for years but reconnected with it during a road trip and I am hooked! I have spent most of the trip on my BB reading about Hawthorne. Thanks John for setting me up. I will keep up from now on from Miami. Debbie Lee, so sorry to hear about your parents. I was in troop 200 and your Mom and Mrs. Cooper played a huge role for me as did all of you in the troop. I had so much fun with all of you and felt like I belonged after joining. I came from Cuba in '61 and finally to York in '62. I don't even remember how my english was when I joined, all I remember is the fun and love we all shared with Remember the Catalina trips and even the crazy backyard sleepovers! It was great. Bless them!
Hi Maria, Thank YOU for joining in here. That's what it's all about. We are just one big Girl Scout troop and you are welcome here any old time.

Message: Oops. I always hit submit before I get to the actual message - thanks for saving me John. Wow. Feedback currently reminds me of the earliest of days - slow. Wasn't it just you and a couple of friends, John? My children were so young when it all started - preschool and elementary school. Now, my oldest has graduated from high school and our daughter is in her freshman year - about to be a sophomore. The years just fly by. I liked the way Sue Bierman once described our h.s. years as "practicing to be grown-up". Great way to look at it, especially all of the embarrassing moments. Actually I'm still practicing at being grown-up. If I could go back to HHS what would I sign up for....I think I'd play tennis or golf. Free instruction, lots of practice and the stamina to get good at the game.
Hey Patty girl, Yep when we first got started it was much more first timers that had found the holy grail of their childhood. Many would write in 2 or 3 times a day ( and not just feedback) with stories related to their Hawthorne youth. I was answering much more email then about, "do you remember that 409 Chevy that someone had", or remembering hangouts, drive ins, football games, etc. Actually that's why the Hangout and Memories pages are here. I met you, your sisters, your children, and the Biermans right here. The late Bob Rierdan (a friend in school that I hadn't talked to since 62) was the first friend to find the website from his home in Missouri in 1997. Bob passed away about 2001 but before he did, he came out for one of the Pinks Runs we used to have. I felt very lucky to have reconnected with Bob before he died. I think Bob was the very first to add his email address to the old alumni list, some 6500 Cougars ago.
Now here it is some 11 years later since your very first post in November of 1998 and you're still with us, along with your sisters and the Bierman clan. I feel just as lucky to have found you all, along with countless other Cougars from different classes. People who I would've never known and now have become very good friends. Hey, I think I'm "soap-boxing" now so I'll get off, but thank you Patty for sticking this one out as we've become "joined at the hip" friends through Cougartown.

Message: Fresh mozzarella and ricotta cheese made in Hawthorne by Angelo & Franco. I read their was a grand opening last month of Angelo $ Franco's small cheese factory in Hawthorne and it had a quite big turnout, did any Cougars go? Franco Russo, a third-generation artisan cheese maker, is a native of Bagnoli Irpino, a village in Italy's Campania region so renowned for its mozzarella that there are 10 family-owned formaggio "factories" ? impressive considering the town?s population of just 3,000. He and Angelo Tartaglia, the company's chief executive, grew up together and decided to take their knowledge to the U.S. The representatives of Angelo & Franco Cheese Factory, encouraged attendees to join the city?s third annual Italian Festival/Bocce Tournament on June 13 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Memorial Park (3901 W. El Segundo Blvd.; free). Best believe that if there?s fresh cheese, we?ll be there.
Thanks Michael, I'll check that one out.

Message: Well John, I don't use any other websites. I enjoy reading this one. I got some nice feedback from my last post. And right after I sent that post, we went to our other home in North Bend, Wa. When Debbie and I got there, there was a small herd of (about 20) Elk just lying around. I consider myself just a city boy after growing up in Hawthorne. So, stupid me, I thought it would be nice to introduce the male old German Shepherd I have, and Debbie's six month old female Beagle to the Elk. At worst, I thought the Elk would runaway. I didn't know that 10 of them were babys until we got too close. One of the female Elk charged my old dog, and he can't run fast anymore. He's blind in one eye, and can't see out of the other. She got right over him so close he could have reached up for milk, but didn't hurt him. They weigh half a ton, and it ran the opposite direction from me standing there. I know we had some wild animals in Hawthorne when I was a kid, lizards n snakes in the vacant lots. Maybe there could be some storys out there people could share with us about animal encounters in Hawthorne (like the trees). No animals were hurt in this story, but even road kill would be welcome. I liked the Beaver rescue story I read last year.
Hey Rick, great story and glad ol' "Lucky" was OK. I'm sure an elk could have done some serious damage. Hawthorne animal stories: I had a dog (Tubby) when I was about 5 years old. He would walk George Gates and me to York school every morning (about 7 blocks) and be there when we got out of school, I think about 1pm. No leash laws in those days so Tubby was on his own from sunup to sundown. He got picked up a couple of times by the dog catcher too. The dog catchers ran around in vans and Tubby learned to steer clear. It could be a plumber, dry cleaner, bakery, etc. ANY kind of van, and he would high tail it in the opposite direction. That's my Hawthorne animal story and a smart animal he was too.

Message: At a recent family gathering of my mom's side of the family (Gutierrez family; older 5 kids went to Leuzinger, younger 5 went to HHS) they were talking about not taking their first showers until they were already in high school and built a new house for the family of 12. At the old house it was the older kids' job to heat the water in a barrel on the wood stove and carry it to the bath tub. This was in Hawthorne in the 1940s on 118th street. Kind of hard to believe just a couple of generations ago this was still a way of life. I think some of them mentioned seeing the Wizard of Oz at the Hawthorne Plaza movie theater. Did the Wizard of Oz play in theaters every 7 years like old Disney films before videos and DVDs?
Hey Tom, I'm sure it did as why just shelve a perfectly good movie with no other way to view it. Great family story too.

Message: Hello all. Haven't written in a long time. Enjoying retirement and was looking at Pacos pics. The question about who Brian played for should be, I believe, is the Selma Davis Dodgers. Along with a guy named Steve Andersen. Middle League as we called it back then. 13-15 year olds. That was the year that the our Lloyd Dennee Cardinals whupped Rich Sloan and Bruce Johnson's Optimist team for the league championship. 20-1 for the year. Isn't that right Rich? :-) MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude

By the way, I was checking out the newest group of Pacos Pics and in the Hawthorne Intermediate group shot, check out the center of the top row. It's old friend Gene Jones. And if the date says 1958 that's about the time he showed up with a huge black panther tattoo, forever on his arm. Yup....8th grade! Love to you all M.S.
Happy Anniversary Buddy!! And yes I too remember that Black Panther tattoo, the entire length of the forearm of the late Gene Jones. How he hid that thing from his parents until he was 21 is beyond me
