Then Jonathan my second oldest announced that his wife Stacy and he were expecting in September...GREAT! Then, are you ready, do you care, last night in an early birthday celebration for his mother, Colby, the 4th oldest announced that he and his wife Amie are expecting in November, ready...TWINS! 4 grandkids before Christmas! If this continues by the time I get to 75, I'll have 60 grandkids. What a blessing, sorry about the band width. Gramps

We were close when she lived in Hermosa but when Mel moved to Arizona, we lost track of each other. She was such a nice and thoughtful person. My condolences to the Bottoms and Manning Family.

Message: I just noticed the name Ole Askehave added recently to the alumni list. Ole was one of our foreign exchange students class of 56. I believe he was from Denmark. It's nice to see more "mature" Cougars sign in. Ole was a really nice guy and cute too. We used to come in early before first period, I believe for Mrs. Ton's Sr. problems class. Several of us had to wait a while for school to start and Ole would tell us about life in Denmark. Really interesting. I recently signed up for facebook, right after all the chatter about facebook. I always said no way. A friend invited me in so I signed up. One name popped up as a possible friend. I recognized the name as Virginia Stites in my graduating class. We went to Disneyland for Sr. Ditch day together with several others. I told her about Cougartown.com and she said she would check in.

My wife had major back surgery that subsequently put us out of boating. If anyone has a big boat and is looking for a long term slip rental in Long Beach I have one. This slip will hold up to a 55' vessel, water and electric included. Sorry, no live aboards allowed. if interested, call me at (562) 822-1601 for details, thanks.

Message: Cougar Sighting! I had a conversation with Gregory Bashford while in Southern California with my daughter recently. He inquired where we were from, and I told him, but being in the area, I mentioned that I grew up/graduated from Hawthorne. He says "no kidding?" and I expected him to say he from a nearby city, but he shocked me by sharing that he is also an alumni of HHS. His name is Gregory Bashford, Class of '73. His cousin is Anita Harmon whose name I recognized which shocked him because he said, "Yeah, but she married a Bell and they moved up north" can you imagine my reaction to that when my brother lives near and knows Anita? What a great sighting - I have sort of tried to coordinate one locally that hadn't yet happened by chance. Regarding that, I had a business call a few weeks ago and was talking to a Cougar, Sharon White who is married to another Cougar, Jeff White who says she worked with Miaaka Lester, also a Cougar from the late 70's! She also met the one I've exchanged emails with for awhile, and have been in the same places at the same time many times. I mentioned to Greg that I'd have to post this sighting here if he didn't before I returned, and I have been delayed because I wanted to have his exact last name, and didn't have available until now.

Melody was part of the Manning Tribe, she has a house in Hermosa Beach and had a house in Prescott Valley, AZ where my sister Susie Manning lives. Melody, Brian & Susie grew up together in Hawthorne and had a lot of fun! My heart is breaking today, again so unexpected. For those of you that knew Melody I will post arrangement information when I have it.

Message: Cougar Sighting! I seem to have a nack for bumping into younger Cougars. I was at the Sears in Del Amo checking out the Lands End department and a young man approached to ask if he could help. Being as talkative as I was in high school I started a conversation and asked where he grew up. Turned out Giovanni Villanueva is a Cougar from the class of '08. I encouraged him to go on Cougartown and come to a cruise night. Some young blood at Cruise night might be interesting!

They're following the marketing strategy of freebie meals recently offered by Denny's and IHOP to generate big lines and attention. Maybe if Green Farms BBQ had tried a freebie chicken special they might still be around today. Ha ha

It was a great block!! Great memories. I do remember Sam. Sam the meat man. He was a very funny man. And yes how can you not live on 138th and not eat the grinders from Stellinos. So good. Do you remember all those penny candy machines in the hallway? I still have the little bible and hotdog from those machines. Ah, what fun memories!!

We also thought about Sam " The Butcher" who's shop was in Stellino's Market. He always wore a white shirt, black tie a paper hat and a huge smile. He always offered us kids cold Hot Dogs when Mom was ordering her monthly meat order. Also, Frank Stellino's Italian Sub Sandwich, 1 ft. long, with everything on it, all for 35 cents. It's always a great conversation when we talk and remember our childhood! Getting ready to go to the Annual Bakersfield Street Rod Show, the news last night said there were over 2000 entries. Have a Great Weekend Cougars!!!

Message: I'm not sure why, but it seems I've gotten very nostalgic about Summer lately. There weren't many times that summers in LA were unbearably hot but there were some. I remember that if it got too hot during the summers in LA in the 50?s and 60?s, we took cold showers, pointed every fan in the house in our direction and prayed the sticky anti-perspirant held until we got to the air-conditioned movie theatre when going on a date. As some of us remember, the attire was much different than what is worn in public today. Girls didn?t wear shorts and halters for ?hot? dates in August. They wore ?peasant? blouses and ?circle? skirts. Nylon hose were worn to show off the new Capezio ?flats.? They accented their dainty little necks with brightly colored silk scarves. Screw-back pearl earrings set off their Prell-washed hair. Guys wore sports jackets or even suits, but mostly in the summer just starched and ironed white dress shirts or short-sleeve plaid shirts, ties optional, and slacks. No jeans for date night unless the date rode a motorcycle, but that?s a different story. Since most dates drove un-air-conditioned cars, there were two choices. Insist on windows up or shellac your hair with so much spray that not even gale-force winds would move a single hair. There was one problem. Humidity increased the stickiness of the spray causing hair to droop from the weight and/or catch every leaf, bit of paper or tine of comb, and refuse to let go. Any young man with more than an hour's experience knew NOT to touch his date?s hair. Summer drive-in theater dating during July and August was not even an option. Girls wore Midnight in Paris, Channel No. 5 or Tigress cologne. Guys wore Brute, Brelecream, or Aqua Velva. The only relief was the air-conditioned snack bar, usually crowded with sweating teens trying to look ?cool.? As soon as the lights came on between double features and the dancing popcorn boxes strutted across the screen, teens popped out of Fords and Chevys to line up for snow cones and large Cokes with extra ice. As much fun as it was in the other seasons, the neighborhood drive-in was just not the place for a Saturday night date in August, no matter how good the ?Monster from the Black Lagoon? or "Moses" was said to be. I look back at those days now and I have to laugh at the extents to which we all went to, as teenagers, to be ?cool? and appear as if we knew what we were doing. But that?s ok; laughter is one of the best parts of life. It?s what makes the hard parts easier to endure.
