Message: I think I preferred KFWB radio. FM was good but not until later, too hard to get. Boy, summer is almost here and not a cool-aide stand in sight. I wonder, do kids do that any more? I miss the annual cool aide stand my brothers and I used to have, the nights laying with all the lights off in the house listening to Vin Scully broadcast the Dodger games, going to the beach every chance I could and spending all day there til at least 5pm. Not much of any of that in Georgia :( . I especially liked the Ice cream truck that came by and getting a couple of ice cold items to fight off the sometimes hot weather LA would have. Maybe thats what made A&W Rootbeer so good. I seem to be a long way from all of that now. Thanks, John, for bringing it just a little closer.

Message: Hello! My new memoir Gringa: A Contradictory Girlhood (Seal Press, October 2009) is partially set at HHS, and my editor wants me to find out about a memorial plaque I've mentioned in the book.In 1984-1988, we used to eat lunch under a tree near the library, beside a plaque that I believe memorialized David Niles. Can anyone confirm this, along with the dates of his birth and passing? Please feel free to e-mail me at melissah@uoregon.edu. Thanks very much . . .-Melissa (class of 1988)

Message: Marilyn, I grew up on Boss Radio, 93 KHJ. In those days, "Top 40" encompassed every genre of music -- even comedy and spoken word (remember "The Americans" by the Canadian newsman?). Anyway, I remember loving Ray Stevens' version of Misty right along side of songs like Brandy, Wild Fire, Hocus Pocus (by Focus), Frankenstein, Love Train, Sideshow, Polk Salad Annie and Harper Valley PTA. As I got into high school, I migrated to "free form" FM radio (KMET, KLOS, K-WEST, KROQ) and sort of dropped my interest in country, folk and soul. But I'm still a fan of all that KHJ/Casey Kasem stuff from "back in the day."

Message: Hey, Betty Girl; That sounds really great, give the Hell's Angel's & Vago's motorcycle gangs my greetings when they arrive in your town. I put a lot of them in jail when I worked SWAT & Narcotics Bureau for the L. A. Sheriff's Dept.. They used to be very active in and around the Lawndale and Lomita areas in the 1970's before we chased them out of town to the desert so they could cook their Methamphetamine without being disturbed by us.

Message: I'm going to start posting with my maiden name included because I keep getting emails from Class mates and reunion dot com that people are leaving messages for me at those websites. I don't subscribe to those - why should I, I have COUGARTOWN! - and it occurred to me that since I always post with my married name, if anyone Googles my maiden name they won't find my C-town postings. So, in the interest of keeping the class of 76 together I will start using my maiden name for a while just to see if I start getting some hits. Thank you John, for Cougatown (my daily stop!); for your friendship, and for your absolutely wonderful sense of fun and humor. I love you!!! xoxoxo Sharon Bierman Branigan (there I go again)

Message: I look forward to Earthday every year, then a few days later is my birthday. We should really be conscience of taking better care of our mother Earth every day. Hey, if the Earth is our mother, then who's our father? The man in the Moon? Just joking around. Maybe because my name is Jokela. It is too bad that Eucalyptus park has a drug and gang problem. The city has put alot of money to make the park a great place for kids. There's a skateboard park now at the end of the park near the Methodist Church (where I use to attend). When I was a kid, one day at Eucalyptus park, one of the coaches there, a tall and mean man, took my skateboard away from me and hid it because he said I was skateboarding too much around the park. I liked all the coaches there, except for that big oaf. There happened to be a nice man at the park who got my skateboard back for me from where it was hidden inside the gymnasium office, and he really gave coach "oaf" a mouthfull for hiding it. That was great!

Message: I loved the pics by Denny Unfried of the early church. It reminds me of my own church on the corner of El Segundo and Ramona. When we started going there it was about 1947. The original building was an old army barracks that had been moved on. Sometime in the 50's -I forget exactly when - they built the permanent building and later had to move the entrance to the Ramona side when they widened El Segundo Bl. leaving the strange steps to nowhere on the El Segundo side. We left in 1966 but the last time we were there it hadn't changed a bit and is still the same on Google Earth. I wish we had photos of the old building but I can still see it in my memory. I saw you had Ray Stevens The Streak on the feedback page. I have that tape and he is one of my all time favorites. There has never been another entertainer like him.

Message: Hey, John Boy;Just got back from a week in Palm Desert and looked in and saw the post about Earth Day. Has anyone ever been to Kingman AZ, I have, I spent a week there one day. From what I saw while passing through Kingman, I don't think that dumping a little oil on the ground there would hurt much of anything, as a matter of fact, it might help enhance the place.

It being the Only religion that you will go to jail for not properly humbling yourself before it. Before all the world we in America stand to show our reverence of the great and mighty Earth! Myself I am celebrating by dumping all my used motor oil back unto the ground from which it was received and cutting down a dozen trees for a great bonfire! and basking in the glow of our great mother Earth! :D

Message: Was saddned to hear on the news last night that Eucalyptus Park in Hawthorne has become synonymous with drug dealing, fights, gangs and crime. Families are fearful of taking the kids there. Thankfully, the Hawthorne P.D. has it high on their radar and are taking steps to try and clear out some of the crime. It would be a shame if another generation of Hawthorne kids did not get a chance to make great memories of their own at this park.

Message: My sincerest condolences to Christie Bear & family. Mr. Fitzgerald, I met in 1956. When I arrived at R H Dana it was the first time I had been around a man teacher. I could always get my way with the woman teachers no problem. Jack stopped me in my tracks and pushed me to the max and could always get the best out of me, on or off the field. I never was in one of his classes but he always seemed to find me on the playground playing ball or just hanging out, up to no good. Mr. Fitzgerald in just a few words could change my mind and move me to do positive things (you must understand I was one of those kids that needed a kick in the butt once in a while). For sure Mr. Fitzgerald was a true role model for me and many others back in the day. Dennis Campbell

Message: Warm greetings to all Cougars, re: Jack Fitzgerald, I have known Jack since 1952. He was a competitor in everything he did and a real gentleman. I wholeheartedly agree with all that was written by his picture and elsewhere. The faculty played the eighth graders in four sports. I don't know who looked forward to those games more - Jack or myself. Jack was very successful as a teacher and as an administrator. He will live on in the memories of all those he touched. My sincerest condolences to his daughter and other family members. Harry Plotkin
