Message: Love the pic on BBQ Petes. That was a time when you could be anywhere at any time and not be afraid to have a good time. I remember standing in a line a half a block long with my folks waiting for one table to move out and one bunch to move in. My brother and I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about but I don't think there was a plate with much left on it. Good grits! It went on for a few years as I recall. At least until us kids found Skippys, McDs, Frosties, Roccos, Taco Tio, and cars, etc. when we were all grown up. :-) Fun times. I've been retired a week and still can't believe I don't have to set an alarm clock. Although, I was usually awake before it went off anyway. Still awake before it used to go off. But got a pretty nice retirement present from my company. Not a G-father clock like Paco, but a really nice gift certificate to Cabelas outdoor stores. It would buy a decent set of golf clubs and then some. Or set up a fly rodder like me with some classic equipment.. Pretty nice if you like outdoor stuff. Anyway, good stuff John. And, all you folks who contribute to this site. It's still great. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.
Hey Jake, Happy retirement to you and Judi

Hey Clark, You're exactly right. I went to Leuzinger Memorabilia Days today and ran into George Key. He's coming to Cruise night too so for all the 70s folks, be there, and be on your good behaviour as your Principal will be there too.

Wow! John, who would of ever known will see this day. But I do remember the joblees rate was high in the early 70's.

Message: Huaraches don't squeek if you treat them with WD-40, Saddle Soap and Bag Balm, not in any particular order of preparation LOL. I have gone through many pairs of these sandles over the years, I buy a pair at least once a year when I travel to Mexico. The prices have gone up quite a bit over the years, I think the first pair I bought in Mexico (about a 100 years ago) were about $1.00 U.S. or less. That's back before the Mexican government re-did their money and removed three zero's from their printed Peso bills. I remember I was in Puerto Vallarta one time and when I went to check out of my hotel, my bar and food bill was $7,200,000.00 Pesos. I about cr--ped myself until they converted it to American dollars which was about $750.00 U.S..

Message: Hey John - if memory serves, "Huaraches" were more of a traditional leather sandle (made in Mexico) with a back strap and an over the arch strap (rather than a between the toe strap). However, for me, what made them "Huaraches" was the used tire tread they had for soles.
That's them....

Message: In regards to Tom Nadal's question on February 27th, "Has anyone been to the Beach Boys Monument by the Airport?", I was there last year at another Cougars request for pictures and took the three. I was not sure how to post them on Cougartown, so I sent them to you at your e-mail address. Thought you would know how to post them.
Hi Vicky, Yes they have been posted. Lots of us Cougars went to the dedication on May 20, 2005. Fun day with lots of Beach Boys (and Girls) there.

Message: Sorry, back to the go-aheads - my wife grew up in Hermosa & went to Mira Costa, and we lived in Manhattan Beach for a long time, nobody I knew there ever called them go-aheads, but we did in Hawthorne. In Manhattan, they were much more commonly referred to as "Slaps", which makes sense as they would slap your heel while walking...
No one has mentioned Huaraches....

I had a bank account at the old Interstate Bank on Hawthorne Blvd., now defunct that I apparently forgot about. As I kinda remember it was a $100.00 Christmas club account, the interest just kept growing all these years. Thanks again.

Message: I went to the California Unclaimed Property site 6 months ago and found I had monies from a safe deposit box, I left at Hawthorne Savings when I moved to Vegas in 79. They sent me another letter, and it ask me to prove I was a resident of Hawthorne Cal. way-back then. So like John says, don't throw anything away. I looked through my old stuff of way-back Hawthorne and found my old Hawthorne Savings and Loan book, I'll bet that will work. Hey John is Hawthorne Savings still there?
It was about 2 years ago...who knows.

Her brother Dallas also attended IHS...I'm pretty sure her brother Herman did too...He was known as Buster. Have a good day everyone!

Message: I sure am enjoying all these old Inglewood pictures. I wonder if anyone out there knows who the 3 girls are in the picture of Manchester & Market. They are on the corner. The one on the left sure looks like my Mom....I doubt if it is, but you never know!! She was about 17 then and did attend Inglewood High. She grew up there. She lived at 1000 Orchard Drive. Next is the go aheads...thats what I always called them...But there was a time when I asked about them in a store and I would get a strange look from someone who would say "what are those"? I've asked friends at work and they said they never called sandals go aheads in Albuquerque. As for going bare foot...I did that too. Almost everywhere I went I was barefoot...I sure would feel awkward doing that now, but back in the day I can remember everyone without their shoes. I can also remember the hot pavement on the bottom of my feet as I dashed for shade!

Message: I never really wondered why thongs were called go-aheads until everyone here started asking. I looked it up on the Internet and found a couple of places that said they were called go-aheads because you couldn't walk backwards in them without them falling off. Makes sense. Personally I have never worn them. They were too uncomfortable on my toes.
Me too Marilyn, thanks for the answer.

Message: Being the mouthy old girl that I am, just HAVE to put my 2 cents in on a couple of things. One, Jim Frederick brought up "go-aheads" (now known as "flip-flops")! I love it! I tried to get someone on CT to come up with how that word came about, but not a single soul responded. I wondered if I was the only person who remembered it! And Sue King darlin ... I think it's GREAT you took your 29-year old daughter, Lori, to Disneyland for her birthday. You're my kinda gal! YOUNG AT HEART!

Message: Hi John & Ctown. I have been enjoying all the Inglewood pictures also. They are really bringing back alot of memories. Me and my friend shared a paper route and would get up early and throw papers all over Inglewood for not much money. But Christmas was good. We always would start porching the papers before Christmas so we would get a better tip! Looking forward to Cruise Night. Also if there are any class of 77 on facebook please find us we started a group for our class. Not to take anything away from Ctown (we can have some fun, stay in touch and save some of John's bandwidth). Everything is good except for the USC Men's Basketball team. See everyone soon.
Hey Dennis, Thanks for the shout and yes, I think it's a great idea to have individual class get-togethers, websites, etc. Cougartown will be here but if everyone can become a part of their class group, I say go for it. See you all at Cruise Night or Leuzinger Memorabilia Days this Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
