Message: Oh, the corner of Manchester & Market! Just to the right of the building in the picture was Barker Bros furniture store. My late brother worked there perhaps around the time this photo was taken and I worked there in the mid sixties as a "Helper." The manager, Mr. Shanes was a great guy, very fair and his assistant mgr Steve Badinock was a cool guy with a red & white '57 Chevy. I helped unload the truck deliveries when they came and did other 'general' work there. With my employee discount I bought my folks a Kelvinator refrigerator with a bottom freezer. This unit was one of the first that had the 'thin walls' we take for granted nowadays. You know, that frig was still working when us 'kids' sold the homestead after my folks passing over 30 years later! American Motors built it along with the A/C systems in their Rambler cars for those of you not knowing such things. Then in the early '70's I got a job at the Sears store also in Inglewood as a "Fixture Man" because it paid more than a salesman. I was hired in October to set up for the Christmas Season that was coming up. Some things were kept on the roof where I could watch the big jets on final approach to LAX and in the summer of 1972 made my first flight on a Continental 747 to Hawaii. From the roof I could see the same type of plane & before going would yearn to be on one. It had THREE lounges; 2 in coach and the one upstairs which is where I was when the Captain pointed out the Big Island barely visible out the left side windows.

Message: What I find very interesting about the 1940 picture and something I know carried on until at least the 1960?s was the mileage signs showing the distance to nearby communities. They seemed to me that they would be very useful to travelers especially in areas when one city merges with another. But they seem to have went the way of the Dodo Bird.
Hey Jer', Lomita has them.

Message: A proud update on a past Cougar athlete. Brother and '65 grad, Skip Effler and his 1970 San Fernando Valley State College NCAA Champion Baseball Team were inducted into the Cal State Northridge Hall of Fame yesterday. It was inspiring to see 25 old farts treat each other with love, respect, and brotherhood after these past 39 years. It was really cool to witness...... Way to go bro !
Congrats Skip on the induction.

Message: So the main thing I noticed about the recent photo that is posted, is the fact that there are no cars in the photo, people are actually walking and waiting for the bus! And David, I hate to tell you this...but most high schools are just as you described what Hawthorne High is like now. Very, very unfortunate.

Message: Hello fellow Cougars! For those of you that don't know, our own Hawthorne High school has turned into a PRISON! I went there on business and talked with a few people including the priciple. He gave me a special pass to roam around the school to see what it looked like now. Boy was i in for a shock! I counted EIGHT security officers and a couple of Hawthore p.d. The lockers were all torn out (because of problems with drugs and guns i was told) and who knows where our "time capsule" is??? The old senior square was completely wiped out and there were fences even between the classroom buildings. There were many other problems too, but I left the campus that day pretty "bummed out", to say the least. I'm glad I went to Hawthorne when I did!

Message: I was amazed to see the new shopping center on Imperial and Crenshaw. There is a new Burlington Coat Factory, CVS Pharmasy(?) and other stores. I can't believe they tore down the Imperial Theatre, but I guess we have to make way for progress. I remember going to Smith's Food King (used to be Food Giant) years ago. One of our tenants was an old man who never bathed and once a month when he got his welfare check, would go shopping at Smith's. One of the young men that worked there told me that he's put in free bars of soap in his bag as a "hint" for better hygiene. Speaking of Smith's Food King, who remembers the boycott when child actor Kirk Calloway got bonked on the head by a security guard after he mouthed off at him?

Message: OK, I may have asked this a few years ago and will ask this again. This has really been bugging me since last night and I don't know why I just remembered it. Does anyone here remember the Gilliland family that lived on 116th Street in Holly Park of Hawthorne? There was the boy Charlie and he had a sister that owned a brown horse. She used to ride it onto our street off of Van Ness Ave frequently, and then ride it towards Crenshaw/Imperial shopping center where Thrify Mart was. I always wondered where she boarded her horse. I remember there was a K-Mart on Imperial and Western (up on Rosecrans Hill) and when I was very young I remember seeing a "farm" in the back of the store (this would be to the west of the KMart building). I saw cows and horses. So I was hoping someone on this board would remember the Gilliland girl and her horse and if she kept her horse at this farm?
Hi Tammy, I don't remember the farm but I think someone would know. Didn't the Gililland's have a TV repair business in Hawthorne?

Message: Enjoyed seeing the picture of the J.C. Penney's in Inglewood. My HHS Graduation suit was purchased there along with many other items over the years. Since the La Brea entrance was lower than the Market Street side THIS Penney's had an elevator and management was often watching WHO would be riding in it. Yep, roudy kids were told to take the stairs! I noticed the '61 Buick on Manchester has only THREE "Port-holes" on its fender. There has been controversy that Buicks have always had FOUR 'portholes' on each side because they had V8's. Hey, a picture is worth 1,000 words, right? of course, the late model Buicks are V6's so, three portholes per side are right on! But in 1961 what were they thinking?
I think the mid 50s Buick Specials had 3 holes. The Centurys, Supers, and Roadmasters had 4. Not sure about the later versions.

Message: I was the Student Council's chairman of the HHS car rally held in 1975 (my junior year.) I can clearly remember driving around the PV hills in my 1971 Pinto, mapping and timing the route, but I can't remember where the rally ended... probably at HHS? I CAN remember where the rally ended in the 1976 race because I won that one with co-pilot Jodi Swain. A total fluke; we were just goofing around and were shocked to find that we won - it ended in a parking lot at Redondo Beach. Most details escape me, although I clearly remember Jodi yanking the door handle off the inside passenger door of my car... OOPS... thank you for asking Tom; the memories are fading a bit after all these years... good grey-matter exercise!

Message: I'd like to know who out there organized our HHS version of the Amazing Race, the Saturday morning Car Rally. I remember driving all around the South Bay in search of clues to the next destination, never quite understanding how the winner was determined, but having fun burning $1.50 in gas with my buddy. Could you imagine any school having an event like this today? There would probably be issues with the high price of gas, carbon footprint, and all types of signatures for assumption of risk and waiver of liability. Oh, those were the days!

Message: Responding to a question by Tom Nadal. Yes it is true that the Beach Boys played for the Class of 1969's prom. It was held at the Beverly Hilton and believe it or not, they were late. Mike Love walked out in a white Jesuit attire, addressed the faculty, the curtain went up and I remember dancing for about 2 hours, it was great. Thank you Beach Boys for a very memorable evening!

Message: Cougar Sighting! Don't want any challenges from you Baker - it may be a little staged but it's always a delight to visit with Janny Wanny Chicken Fanny Blomsterberg! We celebrated daughter Lori's birthday at Disneyland and checked in with Jan while there. Wish he didn't have to work, he could have played the day away with us! It was a blast - happy memories. And it's NOT possible that I am the mother of a 29 year old. Sigh....
No challenges here Sue, but just wondering how many Mom's take their 29 year old on a teacup ride for their birthday HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORI!!!

Message: Ahh, Chaneys.. My mom worked at Chaneys, her first job in California after moving from North Dakota, my aunt Edith worked at Chaneys, Jimmi Vollrath worked at Chaneys (her deep, hoarse voice scared and facinated me as a young 'un). They left the Chaneys beautiful tile entry along the side walk long after Chaneys was gone... Good times
Hey Dan, My grandmother worked at Chaneys, retiring in the early 50s after 20 years. The tiles, I'm told, are still there.

Message: I was on You Tube checking out a few Beach Boys videos and started thinking about my HHS days. Is it true they performed at a class prom? What year was it and where was it at? Has anyone been to the Beach Boy monument by the airport? It's tucked away, but kind of a cool tribute.

Yes it's true Tom, it happened in 1969...

Message: Hello everybody. I just wanted to let you know I just produced another video and linked it to Cougartown called Inglewood of Yore. It contains most of the pictures JB has been sharing on Cougartown plus some others you might not have seen yet. I also included some of the classic oldies but goodies. I know this last batch of pictures has given me many wonderful reminders of the great times we all had growing up in Hawthorne. I just can?t seem to remember where I bought my first bra but it was probably Penney?s or Chaney?s. But maybe it was Lyon?s or Shaw?s. I think I got my first jock at one of them (JB, can I say jock on CT?) Anyway for all of you who were wondering, all the latest pictures were provided by the Inglewood Public Library.
Yes you can say jock, but not jock strap.

Message: I really like that picture of JC Penney, and while I don't remember that Penney's, oddly enough I remember the Gas Co. I've got a trivia question about that photo though. On the right side of the picture, there are two highway signs, what was the 42? My guess is either Manchester Ave or Lincoln Avenue? Does anyone have any idea? Does anyone care. Also, the highway sign next to it, would that be 107 or Hawthorne Blvd? Okay, I've got too much time on my hands.
Hi Jill, The 107 sign is on La Brea and the 42 sign is on Manchester.
